Also on the calendar are candlelighting times, weekly parshiot, as well as congregational birthdays, anniversaries and yahrzeits. Volume 79.02 In Israel, for the past few weeks, the answer to most questions would have been: Acharei ha’chagim (After the holidays.) When will you get back to me on that question? Acharei ha’chagim! When will you finish that paper? Acharei ha’chagim! With the intensity of the past few months here in Baton Rouge, as well as on the Jewish calendar, I have found myself saying those two words often. On one hand, it is good and healthy to keep our eyes fixed on a future date to which we are looking forward. On the other, it can be dangerous to wish time away, and to want it to pass faster. As we all know, time passes fleetingly enough without having to will it away. That said, now that the holidays (High Holy Days, Sukkot, Simchat Torah) are actually over, it seems we can take a well-deserved deep breath. And yet, this whole period of time on our calendar can seem a bit jarring and disorienting. After all, what a weird pivot!...We go from the intense solemnity of the Days of Awe to the raucous celebrations of Sukkot, only to be followed by the month of Cheshvan, the only month of the Hebrew calendar with no holidays whatsoever. The shifting from somberness to joy to inactivity that we find on the Jewish calendar is one which mirrors the Jewish mentality and life in general. The month of Cheshvan, which we enter on November 1st, is frequently referred to as Mar Cheshvan, meaning “Bitter Cheshvan,” due to its lack of holidays and overt reasons for joy. But, therein lies the brilliance of it. Throughout this month, we get to relax and focus on the internal and external work to which we committed ourselves during the new year of Rosh Hashana. Instead of boredom, it’s brilliance. Instead of inactivity, it’s creativity. All it requires is a bit of mental effort! Again, it was such an honor to pray with all of you, get to know you better, and help start this year of 5777 off on the right track. I look forward to seeing all of you again soon! Bivracha, Rabbi Natan 1 Shabbat Does Not End Friday Night . . . Saturday is Shabbat, Too! The President’s Corner Now that the High Holidays are behind us, the year 5777 is off to a great start. Our introductory Jewish Journeys program was well attended and a great success. The theme of the next event will be “Noah” and will be held on October 30, followed by “Abraham’s Journey” on November 13, and “Giving Thanks” on November 30. These Journeys focus on infants to age 9, but often will have events that cater to the entire spectrum of the congregation, from teens to adults. Everyone is invited to attend! Please consult weekly emails, our recently updated website and our BSS Facebook page for more information. fellow congregants are in need. Opportunities to help are limitless…whether helping with transportation or groceries, child-care, meals, laundry or any other talent that you would like to offer, your participation will be appreciated as well as fulfilling. Our community concerns are not only limited to our Beth Shalom family, but also extend to the greater Baton Rouge Community as well. To add to our mission of Tikkun Olam, the board has endorsed our association with Together Baton Rouge. Together Baton Rouge (TBR) is a coalition of more than 40 religious congregations and community-based organizations in the Greater Baton Rouge area. The stated goals of TBR are to build relationships across our community based on trust and a willingness to listen to each other; to equip members and leadership with skills and practices to get results; and to achieve change on concrete issues as part of our common call to justice. Our involvement has been sought by the TBR leadership and encouraged by the Religious Action Center of the Union for Reform Judaism. Rabbi Natan’s two adult education classes begin in November. Introduction to Judaism: 4000 Years in 18 Nights will hold its inaugural session on November 9. This fascinating class in not only intended for those considering conversion, but also for anyone wishing to review the fundamentals of Judaism. On November 27 Rabbi Natan will be teaching the first of 8 sessions of Israel: Paradox and Promise, an exciting class which will focus on Israeli current events. Rabbi Natan will draw on his time living in Israel and serving in the IDF to shed light on some of the most intractable issues of today’s Middle East. If these endeavors interest you and you would like to become more personally involved in any of our programs, please reach out to us at [email protected] and your participation will be welcomed. Beth Shalom has always been a strong community that cares for each other whether we are celebrating simchot or gathering during our times of tzuris. To that end our newest effort is Yachad, Beth Shalom’s Caring Committee. Yachad’s goal is to support each other in times of need. Hadassah Super South Hub is hosting a Turkey Trot:Virtual 5K - 82% of heart disease is preventable. What’s one of the best ways to reduce your risk? Exercise! Get the facts and help raise awareness and money for women’s 2 Brotherhood We have just celebrated Simchat Torah, on which we consecrated the Torah scrolls celebrating completion of the reading for one year and the beginning of the next. This signifies that Torah study never ends. Some of you may know UNESCO recently passed a draft resolution denying the deep historic Jewish connection to holy sites in Jerusalem by denying the Jewish connection to the Western or Wailing Wall. Even though we may not agree with some of Israel’s actions, this has to be the last straw. We must back Israel on this issue all the way. The Brotherhood has decided to bring in more guest speakers on different topics. It would probably be helpful for congregants to give feedback to the Brotherhood for topics they are interested in hearing about. You can contact John or me with suggestions or another brother and they can forward them to us. Gary Baum In October, we learned about Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Kol Nidre, and Simchat Torah. We also learned about apples and honey and tasted apples and honey in our classrooms. We also made shofars and paraded down the hallway. We also visited and had a snack in the Sukka. November will be lots of fun! We will be learning about fall, fire safety, Thanksgiving, Noah’s Ark, nutrition, and participating in Stone Soup on November 17th. We will receive a visit from Abilities for our speech and hearing assessment on November 3rd. We will enjoy books during our annual Scholastic Book Fair and host parent/teacher conferences during the week of November 7th-11th. We hope to have a visit from the Baton Rouge Fire Department so our children can learn more about fire safety and see our local heroes in person. School will be closed on November 21st-November 23rd with holiday care provided on all three days. Both the school and daycare will be closed for Thanksgiving on November 24th and November 25th. Todah Rabbah, Rabbi Natan, Steven Winkler, Rayner Learning Council, Cathy Melanson Greetings fromTheRayner Center Barfty News This month barfty is planning to have an event towards the end of the month. It is being planned now and will be fun and have everyone involved. Last month barfly received a very generous amount of donations for the food bank. We are very appreciative to everyone who donated. 3 Jewish Journeys Fall Schedule Theme “After the Flood” We will be exploring various topics from Torah, holidays and Jewish culture, as we look at how floods and other catastrophic events affect communities – including ours in Baton Rouge. How do we start over? What do we learn? What is our responsibility to each other? What are traditions that remain unchanged? We will also have a lot of fun, with music from Nick May, stories, games, crafts and puppet shows! All events are Sundays at 10:30am unless otherwise noted.
