"World's Ugliest Animal" Psychrolutes marcidus 1 The Blobfish 2 3 4 Rachel Caauwe The blobfish is a deep sea fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand. 5 Blobfish are typically shorter than 30 cm. They live at depths between 600 and 1,200 m (2,000 and 3,900 ft) where the pressure is several dozen times higher than at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy. 6 Instead, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. 7 Its relative lack of muscle is not a disadvantage as it primarily swallows edible matter that floats in front of it such as deep-ocean crustaceans. 8 Due to its low density flesh, the blobfish's shape is very different when it is out of water. Its unappealing looks have created much discussion in media outlets 9 In September 2013 the blobfish was voted the “World's Ugliest Animal,” based on photographs of decompressed specimens, and adopted as the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. 10 11 12 Humanity has judged the blobfish by its appearance. Does God do us that way? 13 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7) 14 Isaiah wrote this about Jesus: For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, And as a root out of a dry ground: He hath no form nor comeliness; And when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. (Isaiah 53:2) 15 Let us never judge people by the way that God has made them or allowed them to be. God looks upon the heart and if that is good enough for him, it should be good enough for us! 16
