I am Bored Jar

“I’m Bored” Jar Helps

Summer and Long Breaks!!

When summer arrives every child is
excited about the freedoms summer
brings. However, after a few days at
home they are likely to start whining,
“I’m bored.”
One family member of mine shared
with me that they have a “I’m bored”
jar that really helps with this issue.
At the beginning of the summer, each
child makes a list of activities (listen
to music, ride their bike, paint a picture,..) that they could do when they
get bored. The parents make a list of
activities (pick weeds out of flowers,
sweep the kitchen floor,….)that the
child could do as well. Once their list
is complete, they cut them into pieces
and placed them in the “I’m bored”
jar.
“I am
Bored!”
When kids become bored,
parents send them to the jar
and the child draws one slip
from the jar. Sometimes just
the suspense of not knowing
what might come out is enough
to add a little zip to the day.
Magically, after a few visits to
the jar they made it through the
summer with a minimum of
boring days.
“Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible; and
suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
