From the Pastor’s Desk….
Today is the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The message of the readings is "Go Deeper" Don't just
stay on the surface. The first reading speaks about the gift of freedom that God has given us. The key to
understanding this freedom is that it is a freedom to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength
and love our neighbor as oneself. It is a freedom to love as God loves; and as God wants us to be. We are
called to choose wisely…choose the good… choose life and avoid the harmful. This is not just a gift and
a call but a great responsibility.
In the second reading St. Paul advises us that in order to exercise our freedom, we need to develop the
wisdom of God. We need to see and think the way God thinks about and sees us and not merely in human
terms and with human wisdom.
In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus was warning the Pharisees that they need to go deeper into the meaning
and Spirit behind the law. The law is never meant to be an end in itself. When people focus on the letter
of the law they are really losing the point. St. Matthew urges us to go beyond such inadequate observance
because it represents, in a sense, a conversion of head and hands and not the heart. The ideal expressed in
this Gospel passage reminds us that external religious observance, though certainly important, will never
suffice to make us authentic followers of Jesus.
There is a powerful line in the opening prayer (the collect) that sums the theme of the day that we are to
“look within” the temples of our hearts because attitudes precede actions.
O God, who teach us that you abide
in hearts that are just and true,
grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace,
as to become a dwelling pleasing to you.
May God’s grace make our hearts and lives a fitting and pleasing place for God to live!
God Bless You!
Fr. John Francis
