WELCOME ABOARD! The Jersey Devilrays is a year-round USA swim team. We are part of the Middle Atlantic Swimming LSC (local swim committee) and compete across the tri-state area. Our practice pool is located at Burlington County College in Pemberton, NJ. Cindy Passalacqua started this team, formerly known as the BCC Barons, with 12 swimmers in October 2002. In July 2010, the Barons became Jersey Devilrays Swimming, LLC (JRAYS) and is a for-profit, coach-owned team (owned by Coach Cindy). The team has grown over the last twelve years and is currently at 110 swimmers. We are a very diverse swim team with swimmers of various abilities practicing and competing at swim meets all season long. Most of our JRAYS swim from September through end of May with a core group continuing to swim long course in June and July. We currently have 9 coaches on staff with a wide range of swimming and coaching experience. Every coach works with all the JRAY groups so each swimmer will benefit from their knowledge and expertise. Our coaches sometimes coach from in the water helping out the youngest swimmers or swimming practice with the older ones, and they may also compete upon occasion. Middle Atlantic Swimming: www.maswim.org USA Swimming: www.usa-swimming.org EQUIPMENT Swim suits – (1 Team suit and at least 1 practice suit) Official team suits will be available for purchase through Coach Cindy and Agon Swim. Do NOT wear your meet suit to practices. It won’t last the season. Your Practice suit(s) can be any color you like. Remember, hand-wash your swimsuits in cold water with maybe a little Woolite. Never, ever, put them in the washer or dryer. Girls are to wear 1 piece suits. Boys are to wear a lycra or polyester swim suit, not board shorts. Caps – (2) ARE REQUIRED FOR GIRLS TO COMPETE AND ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THE BOYS. Race day caps are to be the Devilrays cap. Practice caps can be any color you like. We will be taking orders for Team caps imprinted with your swimmer's name in September. Goggles – (2) TWO pairs of working, fitted goggles in their bag at all times are a MUST. I cannot stress this enough!!!!! Try double-strap ones or bungie cords if your swimmer’s goggles keep falling off. AND they do make PRESCRIPTION goggles. Fins – Essential Buy your own, use a Sharpie and put your name on them or have D&Q write your name on them for you. We may not be allowed to use the fins at our practice facility, and there are no size 7 and up fins there. Zoomers – Essential Gold zoomers work for everyone. Zoomer2s for the littlest feet. If buying used zoomers from your teammates: Red zoomers for older kids with good ankle flexibility. Blue zoomers for younger swimmers. Put your swimmer's name on them. Swim bag/big backpack – Essential Should have a big pocket for their dry clothes & shoes, a big wet pocket for their towel, fins, goggles, and a pocket for their snacks & drinks. Pull Buoys – Essential Less than $10. Buy the 1 piece kind. Small size for the 12 and unders and Large size for the bigger kids. Mesh Bag - Essential They can bring their fins, pull buoy, zoomers, goggles, water bottle, etc right to the edge of the lane with them. Drag suit– Optional Makes your swimmers work a little harder. Also "saves" the butt of the team suit from snagging when sitting on meet bleachers. PUT YOUR NAME ON EVERYTHING!!! D & Q – Danzeisen and Quigley, 1720 Route 70 E, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003 856-424-5969 Bonnie or Claire www.DandQ.com VOLUNTEERING Volunteerism at Meets: Volunteer Timers are always needed at the meets, but you are not required to time UNLESS: 1. Your child qualifies for and attends JOs, Elite or the TYR Meet, or if it is specified in the Meet instructions, then we must provide timers/volunteers if asked. 2. Your child is swimming the 400 IM, the 500, 800, 1000 or the 1650. YOU will be required to provide a counter AND timer for your child for that race or arrange, IN ADVANCE, for someone else to time/count for your swimmer. Team Volunteerism: We need parents to volunteer for certain jobs/activities, especially when it comes to our fundraisers. Our fundraisers currently include a Fall mum sale, the January Swim-A-Thon, and 1 or 2 unofficial home scrimmage meets. We are looking into organizing another big fundraiser for later this year. Other volunteer activities include the following Tshirt/clothing sale: Meet Fee/Entry Collector Photographer Donut/Ice Cream/Hot Chocolate Parties Bowling Party Holiday Party Awards Nite Fund raising Most of these jobs will take very little of your time to do, and it’ll free up your coaching staff to coach. Please see Coach Cindy if you’d like to volunteer for one of the above projects. Also, at the meets, the 8 & unders and the 9/10s are there a very long time. Parents need to take the little guys off deck and let them burn off some steam in the hallway or lounge area. At practices, there will be younger swimmers who are done practicing and are waiting for older siblings to finish their practices. Please keep an eye out for our team’s younger members. Fundraising: We currently have 3 major fundraisers: the Fall Mum sale, an unofficial home scrimmage, and our Swim-A-Thon. Other fundraisers may be considered as the season goes on, but we want any additional fundraisers to focus on bringing in revenue from contributors other than mom, dad, grandparents and coworkers. We are looking into the possibility of forming a Parent Support Group which will help coordinate our fundraising activities, and will do the paperwork involved to help form a non-profit arm of our team. GOALS Swimmers will be filling out Goal Sheets and meeting with their coaches, as time permits, to discuss their goals. For the Swimmer: 1. Have fun! 2. Improve stroke technique 3. Drop time 4. Build Endurance 5. Behave Professionally 6. Learn Time Management Skills! 7. Be Committed! For the Club: 1. Have fun! 2. Improve the overall conditioning and technique of our swimmers 3. Behave Professionally 4. Have swimmers qualify for JOs, TYR, Elite, Zones and Senior Champs. For the Parents: 1. Have fun! 2. Be Supportive of your swimmers…both their accomplishments and their failures. 3. Be Supportive of your coaches. 4. Get them to Practice and Meets On Time!! Middle Atlantic Swimming endorses five core values: 1. We believe in a positive environment. 2. We value integrity and fairness. 3. We believe in excellence. 4. We value leadership. 5. We value innovation and creativity. PRACTICES 1. Water Bottles or Gatorade at Every Practice!!!!! (no glass containers) 2. BE THERE AND BE ON TIME! 3. Bring your Mesh Bag with your Equipment (goggles, fins, zoomers, pull buoy, cap, etc) to your lane with you. 4. STRETCHING – IS A PRIORITY! Get your children here on time. If practice starts at 7 p.m., that means at 6:45 they should be out on deck or in the hallway stretching, and in the water at 7 p.m. SHARP. The Team Captains should set an example by leading the stretches. Stretching is also your 15 mins of Social Time. Get your conversations done while you’re stretching. Pool time is precious. 5. Attitude – Come ready to work. To be successful, we’ve got to maximize the pool time we have and give every practice your best effort. Remember, you are representing the Jersey Devilrays, Middle Atlantic Swimming, USA Swimming and most of all, yourself. 6. LISTENING - You need to listen and do what you’re asked to do. Hard work, technique and lots of laps will make you better swimmers…SO SWIM! 7. Off da lane lines please! And Circle Swimming is a must! 8. Backstroke – Know your magic number or you’ll be counting it until you do! 9. Practice Groups and Attendance: Mini Rays – Our youngest group who are not swimming 25s yet Pups – Many 8 & unders and beginner 9 and ups Skates - Advanced 8 & unders, most new 9/10s and 11/12s Stingrays – Our Intermediate Group Eagle Rays – Advanced Intermediates Manta Rays – Our Senior Group Mini Rays – Sundays only Pups – 2 swim practices per week Skates – 2 mandatory swim practices Stingrays and Eagle Rays – 3 mandatory, 4 preferred Manta Rays – 3 mandatory, 4 highly recommended Parents – You cannot sit in the BCC pool area during practices. This is a BCC rule set by the Public Safety for multiple reasons. The Coaches are available to talk to you after practice, on the phone or on-line. But during practice we need to be focused on your children. HOWEVER, if there is something we should know that may affect your swimmer’s practice, please stop and BRIEFLY tell us, while they’re doing their stretches, what’s up. Also, it is very important that we know of any medical conditions that could affect your swimmers…life-threatening or not. Sports induced asthma, diabetes, ADHD, ADD…all have medications that could wear off during practices or meets and affect the health, mood, and attentiveness of your child. Please fill in the medical history and emergency contact form. Also, if your child has an inhaler, it is to be on deck, in the lane, with their name on it, at all times. Attendance Policy This is our recommended attendance policy. Swimmers who do not come to practices regularly may not be able to keep up in their practice lanes, and their meet performance may suffer as well. Pups – 2 swim practices minimum per week Skates – 2 to 3 swim practices minimum Stingrays and Eagle Rays – 3 practices, 4 preferred Manta Rays – 3 practices, 4 or more practices preferred Yes, many of you play soccer, baseball, etc…along with swimming. But to reach the swimming goals that many of you have set for yourselves, you need to be in the water. LATENESS POLICY Coaches #1 Pet Peeve We stretch 15 minutes prior to getting in the water. Your swimmer is to then be in the water ON TIME for warmups and to swim the entire warmup set. If your swimmer is not going to be ON TIME for warmups, then don't come. IT’S NOT FAIR TO THE OTHER SWIMMERS AND IS EXTREMELY DISRUPTIVE AND DISRESPECTFUL TO THE COACHING STAFF. Occasional lateness due to traffic and other unforeseen events is to be expected and is excusable. It is the habitual latecomers that this policy has been enacted for. Meet Warmups Coaches #2 Pet Peeve Swimmers: Will stretch as a team prior to warmups. Swimmers will get in the pool ON TIME, 5 seconds apart, and swim the entire warmup. Parents: Please get your swimmers to the competition pool ON TIME. Most of our swimmers rely on a parent for transportation. You need to make the commitment to be ON TIME just as much as your swimmer does. END OF PRACTICE Coaches #3 Pet Peeve Coaches are NOT babysitters. All parents are to be IN THE BUILDING to pick up their swimmers no later than 10 mins after practice ends. If you are later than 10 mins and the coaches need to wait with your child for your arrival, you will be charged a $10 fee, payable immediately. No swimmer will be left in the building without a parent INSIDE to pick them up. If you are running late, make arrangements with a fellow swim parent to take your swimmer home with them. If practice ends earlier than the time posted on the JRAYS practice schedule, then is not the parent’s fault and the $10 fee will not be charged. DISCIPLINE POLICY All swimmers and parents are required to read and sign the JRAY Code of Conduct form. It’s not fair to the kids who want to practice for your swimmer to disrupt the workout. If, after being spoken to, your swimmer continues to be disruptive, we will send them out to you. Your Coach will expect an apology upon the swimmer’s return to the pool. Continued misbehavior will be grounds for dismissal from the swim team without refund of registration fees. ILLNESS If your child is ill, has a headache, or is otherwise in a definite “mood”, don’t bring them to practice. We will not force anyone to swim who does not feel well. HOWEVER…The pool can be a swimmer’s greatest sanctuary. If you have a child who A. understands this statement and B. can use the pool in this fashion, then please encourage them to come to practice even if they’ve had a bad day. As long as they are not disruptive or argumentative, we will do the best we can to provide that sanctuary for them. INJURIES Injured swimmers can definitely help out on deck at practices and meets. Taking attendance, schlepping kickboards, assistant coaching the minis, running a stopwatch…all of these things can help your child feel like they are still part of the team while they are rehabbing. A swimmer with an arm injury may be able to do kick sets. A swimmer with a leg injury may be able to do pull buoy sets or arm work on a noodle. There are ways to keep your swimmer in shape while they are rehabbing their injury, as long as your doctor agrees and the swimmer wants to swim. (Tip of the Day - If your child breaks their arm, insist upon a Gortex waterproof cast. Swimming aside, it makes taking a shower a whole lot easier unless you want to wrap their arm in a garbage bag every nite for 6 weeks!!!) Swimmers who say they are hurt, injured or sick during practice will be sent out to their parents. First because the parents need to be aware of their child's condition and second because the injured swimmer will not be allowed to hold up their practice lanes or otherwise distract the rest of the team. If the pain continues, we may ask you to take your swimmer to the doctor and bring us a doctor's note before allowing them back into practices. Chronic medical conditions need to be brought to the coaches’ attention so we can make sure the swimmer modifies their workout to prevent aggravating the injury. Please have a doctor check out any neck, back, arm, or shoulder soreness to make sure it is nothing serious. AND have your swimmer to practice ON TIME so they can warmup prior to their workout. MEETS • Highly recommended but are not mandatory. • Mini Meets are usually 1 day long. States & Mini Champs are 2 days. • 9 and up Meets are 2 – 3 days long. • You pay for each race your child swims. • Parents & guests pay meet admission and for a program. • Parents are not allowed on deck unless they are volunteer timers. • DE & PA meets can be overnight meets. Please plan accordingly. Pay attention to the hotel arrangements & make your reservations before the cutoff date. • CHALLENGE EVENTS - The Coaches will select a Challenge Event for each age/practice group at certain meets. Swimmers are to include that event in their entry selections and are not to skip that event on meet day. • There will be a Coach on deck with you at all of our scheduled meets. If you choose to go to a different meet, that’s fine. However, entry deadlines and payment are your responsibility, not the Devilrays and not Coach Cindy’s. Coach Cindy may, if she has time, do the computer entry for you so that your results are accurately sent back to our team. • IF your child is swimming the 400 IM, the 500, 800, 1000 or the 1650 you will be required to either count and/or time for your child for that race or make arrangements, IN ADVANCE, with a fellow parent/teammate, for a counter/timer. Your coaches are NOT to be relied upon to be counters or timers. Meet Warmups (COACHES PET PEEVE #2): Swimmers: You will stretch, as a team, when told to get up and stretch. You will get in for meet warmups ON TIME, 5 seconds apart, and swim the entire warmup. Parents: Please get your swimmers to the competition pool on time. Most of our swimmers rely on a parent for transportation. You need to make the commitment to be on time just as much as your swimmer does. MEET ENTRIES 1. Meets are announced via email. You will download the Meet packets and entry form from these emails. 2. ALL ENTRIES & MEET FEES MUST BE PAID BY THE DEADLINES GIVEN. Please reread this sentence!!! 3. Entry forms and meet fees will be collected at practice by the parent volunteer(s) assigned this job. All checks are made out to Jersey Devilrays. CASH, CHECKS OR MONEY ORDERS ONLY. ENTRIES WILL BE DELETED FOR NONPAYMENT. 4. There will be a $5 per day per swimmer Administrative fee. This fee will pay for all team relays and help cover coaching expenses at meets. 5. Once our team entries are processed, they will be sent out via email. It is your responsibility to immediately check the entries for accuracy. We only have a couple of days to make any corrections necessary. AND I DO MAKE MISTAKES!! 6. Meet fees are nonrefundable unless there is a catastrophic change in why your swimmer can’t compete (broken leg, blizzard, pool closure). Meet fees will only be refunded to you if the Devilrays can secure a refund from the host club. 7. I can’t stress enough the importance of getting your entries in by our deadlines. Middle Atlantic Swimming has experienced tremendous growth & there aren’t enough meets for all the swimmers to enter. We must get our entries in almost immediately after the meet entry packets are made public or we won’t get into the meets. You will be given enough time and reminders about the entry deadlines. PLEASE DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!! 8. CHALLENGE EVENTS Please include the Challenge Event in your event/fee total. Swimmers are not to skip the Challenge Event if they are attending that day of the meet. MEET DAY EQUIPMENT TO BE PACKED IN THEIR SWIM BAG v OFFICIAL TEAM Swim suit …put name on tag v 2 caps – they’ve been known to rip on meet day v 2 pairs of goggles THAT FIT!! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS. v 2 towels – one for on deck (which is going to get sopping wet) and one for the locker room after the meet. Put your swimmer’s name on them. v Swim sandals – absolute must with name on them if possible. v Sweatpants and sweatshirt or t-shirt to wear on deck. It is often chilly on deck (Germantown) and the pool water is not 86 degrees like here at BCC. These items will get wet. The Coach will not allow your children to visit you in the stands or go in the hallway to buy snacks if they are not covered up and wearing their sandals! v Dry clothes in the dry pocket to go home in. v Eyeglass case – hard case with name in it v Healthy snacks v Gatorade, water, etc…ABSOLUTE MUST!!!!!!!!!! v Snack Money – so the bigger ones don’t have to bother you or they can escort the little ones to buy a snack. v Busy stuff – books, hand held games, cards, etc. If it is worth a lot of money or if your child can’t be trusted to put it away on time and zipped up in his bag, then don’t send it down on deck. Impress upon your swimmer that the Coach is there to watch them swim…not to keep track of their gameboy or cell phones. Also, swim meet vendors do not sell AA batteries. Medications…Especially INHALERS and DIABETIC EMERGENCY SUPPLIES…need to be in their swim bags…not up the stands with you!!!!!!! Your swimmer’s name should be clearly marked on all medical supplies! And please put your swimmer’s name on their swim bag! Reminder: On meet day, please leave the fins, zoomers, and pull buoys at home. J MEET DAY RULES 1. DO NOT leave the pool deck unless you tell your COACH first! I don’t care if you’re 5 or 18. We need to know where you are. 2. Bring All Your Stuff Out On Deck. LEAVE NOTHING IN THE LOCKER ROOMS. Winter Coats and sneakers belong upstairs in the stands with Mom and Dad. 3. You need to drink on deck!!! No soda. No milk. No glass containers ever! 4. Food: Healthy, easy to digest stuff. Fruit (bananas and apples), fruit snacks, Swedish fish, veggies, granola bars, pretzels, chocolate bar (1), small bagel. Eat HEALTHY carbs and some protein with your breakfast PLEASE!! 5. Bring a big t-shirt, hoodie & sweats to wear on deck so you don't get chilled. It'll keep your muscles warmer. 6. Warning: Locker rooms are dirty places. Sandals or flip flops are a must!!! 7. Parents: Bring a cushion to sit on and remember: • Don't sit under the loudspeakers or a leak in the ceiling. • Wear a t-shirt under your winter clothes. It’s HOT up top! 8. Parents: Please give your swimmer some change so they can go buy a drink or snack without having to wave you down off the upper deck for money. 9. Kids – When you go up for your race, if you have any question at all about what lane you’re supposed to be in, ASK THE TIMER TIL YOU GET AN ANSWER. It’s the ONE time in your life when it’s OKAY to be a PEST!!! 10. We're going to have fun! We're gonna cheer for each other! Whether you're 1st or dead last doesn't matter as long as you learn from it and have fun doing it! 11. Important: Your biggest rival is the CLOCK. The swimmers in the other lanes are pushing you to do better and expect you to push them. They are NOT your opponent...the CLOCK is. So talk to them on deck & make new friends. Reach over, shake hands after your race & thank them for pushing you. That's what it's all about. TEAM CAPTAINS The Coaches choose our Team Captains. Team Captains ARE expected to: • • • • • • • • • BEHAVE PROFESSIONALLY Lead By Example in the Lanes, On Deck, and at Meets Show Up On Time Lead The Stretches Be Prepared Complete All Practice Sets Swim Their Strokes Properly Become Familiar With All Their Teammates Help take attendance and assist coaches with equipment and cleanup Team Captains are NOT: • Necessarily the fastest, oldest or most popular swimmers. • Expected to be Tattle-Tales or Disciplinarians If a Team Captain needs to step down from his position or does not live up to the Coaches’ expectations of a Captain, the Coaches will appoint another Team Captain to replace him. JUNIOR ASSISTANT COACHES JUNIOR COACH Our Junior Coach and Junior Assistant Coaches will work hands-on with our youngest swimmers. They may also be given a lane of older kids at the discretion of the USA coach on deck. Our Junior Coach position will be a paid position for practices worked only. Meets are volunteer hours just as for the Jr. Assistant Coaches. The Junior Coach will be the Athlete Representative to the Middle Atlantic House of Delegates, and will also be expected, once they are 18, to be prepared to move up into an Assistant Coaching position should an opening occur. This will include taking the appropriate coaching certification classes and USA coaching exam. Junior Assistant Coaches are volunteers and are not paid to coach. A Jr. Assistant Coach may use their volunteer hours on applications for colleges, scholarships and employment and will be issued letters of reference by our coaching staff whenever needed. Neither the Junior Coach nor the Junior Assistant Coaches are allowed to coach unless they are under the direct supervision of a credentialed USA coach. The Junior Coach and Jr. Assistant Coaches may perform any coaching duties assigned by the Devilrays coaches, as long as they are supervised on deck. The Junior Coach and Jr. Assistant Coaches are encouraged to attend our Mini Meets and help out with our younger swimmers. Jr. Assistant Coaches and the Jr. Coach are expected to: • • • • • • • • • BEHAVE PROFESSIONALLY Show Up On Time Lead Stretches Be Prepared Get in the water with our younger swimmers Know and Demonstrate Proper Stroke Technique Become Familiar With All Their Teammates, especially the Minis SMILE Gives lots of hugs and high-fives! SWIMMERS OF THE MONTH The Coaches will choose Swimmers of the Month. To be chosen Swimmer of the Month you must be working on the 7 GOALS for Swimmers: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Have fun! Improve stroke technique Drop time Build Endurance Behave Professionally Learn Time Management Skills Be Committed Your performances and professionalism at meets and your work ethic during practices are 2 of the biggest factors in being chosen Swimmer of the Month. If a parent with a digital camera would like to volunteer once a month to come in and take pictures of our Swimmers of the Month, that would be great! Then we can download the pictures onto our website and for our flyer. 2013-‐2014 Sept Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar April May Pups and Mini Rays Brady Lauren Evelyn Ciara Arjun Brandon Gray Hudson Bryan Skates Emily Heintzelman Princess Shelby Robert Smith Shannon Erica Salazar Julia Dylan Katz Emily Smith Stingrays Jonathan Khari Ally Katie Midura Yuran Aiden Anna D Katie McKiernan Austin Morris Eagle Rays Cameron W Jhasiah Kayleigh Daniel Nick B Paige Matt Kendra Zaleski Brandt Fordham Manta Rays Amanda B Courtney P Atomu Chris C Kayleigh Courtney O Richard Guisela Aste Hanneal Findley
