When you Google “Christmas carols” you get 5.9 million results in .60 seconds. Yes, less
than one second. Lyrics, best of lists, genre lists, suggestions, movies about, ideas on which is
the oldest…nearly 6 million results is more than I wanted to filter through! I love Christmas
carols. I get that from my Mom. She loves them too. But she loves all, including Manheim
Steamroller. I think they are ok, but prefer my songs with words – how else do I sing along??
That’s all songs though, I’m not much on instrumentals. Give me words to mess up! Rock the
cat box anyone? LOL
Christmas Carols – we all seem to have a favorite, right? Mine is We Three Kings. I love
Mary Did You Know too. And New Kid In Town…I guess narrowing it down to an actual
favorite would take some time and effort! My favorites are all songs about the true meaning
of the season, the birth of a baby who would go on to heal all who are hurting, provide hope
to the broken, a lamp to the lost. The Bible tells us to “Sing to the Lord, all the earth” (1
Chronicles 16:23a), and to “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song
with music (Psalms 98:4), and “…come before him with joyful songs” (Psalm 100:2b). The
King James version of Psalm 98:4 says “Make a joyful noise until the Lord, all the earth; make
a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.” Those of you who know me know that I’m not a
great singer, but I am joyful about it 
Buddy the Elf, yes, from the movie, declared “The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is
singing oud for all to hear.” While I don’t recommend breaking out in Rudolph in the middle
of an exam or Silent Night in a meeting, I do think it’s ok to hum a tune at the store, sing
while getting gas, turn up the radio in the car in traffic and belt one out! Sharing the sounds
of the season is a fantastic way to share the peace of God! When I hear a Christmas song it
brings peace to my heart.
It also brings me thoughts of the glorious gift God gave to me – to you – to every single
person who has ever walked this earth. The gift of his Son, Jesus. Most of you reading this
are parents. Can you imagine sending your child to certain death, a death you knew would be
excruciating and not deserved? God sent his son to die for us, in our place. He died having
living a perfect life, a life with no sin. No inappropriate thoughts, no words he ever had to
apologize for, no actions he ever regretted. It all started with the gift of a little baby. A baby
born as a miracle (Matthew 1:18, 23; Luke 1:26-35). A baby sought by those who wished to
kill him before he took his first breath (Matthew 2:3, 16). A baby who would grow to a man
who blessed many through miracles. “The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will
live again. The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb” (lyrics, Mary Did
You Know).
We never deserved that gift, not then and not now. I pray you will take time this season to
gives thanks to God. Thank Him for his Son. Thank Him for an eternity with Him. Thank Him
for giving us something to sing about.
