Prep Me Up - Activity Three
Improving a Challenging Phrase of a Dance Strategy and Plan:
Difficult movement: Left your left leg in attitude, scoop your arms up in a curve, turn
to your right on forced arch and curve your arms up over your body. Fall the floor
putting the top of your left foot on the floor. Repeat the same movement on the same
leg turning to the right, to face the back on the ground. Use your left hand to support
you as you extend your right arm and leg on the diagonal and close to the back with
your right foot on the ground and a bent leg, your arm will come into your body with a
closed fist. Do the same movement coming forward, and make a punching gesture to
the ground. On the ground, turn to your left, on your shin, to face forwards. From this
position, perform the same extend and contract movement to the back and then
forwards. You then scoop down and out, extending the left leg and right arm into a
lunge.
The areas of this phrase I find most challenging, is the extension of your right arm
and leg closing behind and in front. I find this movement hard because I have never
performed a movement like that. It requires a lot of balance and flexibility to keep
both your arm and leg fully extended.
Goal:
My goal is to enhance by flexibility and balance in order to perform the movement
confidently by assessment, which is the 22nd of March
Strategies to achieve my goal:
 In order to develop my core strength, which will improve my balance, I aim to
do 20 press-ups and 50 sit-ups every day until assessment.
 Every day I will practice standing with out anything to lean and extending my
right leg upwards, supported by my right arm. I believe this is similar to, but
harder than the movement in the dance, so by practising something harder, I
intend to make the movement I am working on even easier.
 To improve my flexibility I will perform various stretches daily, these will be
o Sitting with my legs in a V, leaning over both legs and leaning forward
between my legs
o Holding the middle splits
o Lying on my side and holding my straight leg, pulling it slowly towards
me
 Most importantly I will go over the move at least four times every day, this will
ensure the movement is locked in my head and it will become less difficult
each day.
Evaluation of goal:
I feel as if I followed my strategy quite well, especially the stretching and core
strength exercises. I felt more flexible, but wasn’t sure If in the time I had the ab
exercises would have made much difference, but doing them did give me more
confidence in my balance. I believe I could have spent more time rehearsing the
actual move I was struggling with, I felt as if repetition of this is the most effective
way to improve. However overall I did feel a lot more confident going into
assessment, and I know in future applying these strategies to movements or phrases
I am finding difficult will be a good way improve
