NHV assists Maintenance staff
Residents learning and using their skills
A New Horizons Village male resident works with the men in
Maintenance on Tuesdays and Thursday doing “guy stuff”
while shadowing and assisting our maintenance crew. He is
taught work ethics in a service oriented atmosphere when
working around his peers. He also obtains skills that he can
carry with him when relating to others in the work place and on
a social level. When talking with him he expresses the fact that
he likes the friendship he has with the men.
NHV’s activities, resident homes and learning center all
contribute to our NHV mission: giving loving care and
protection to the lives entrusted to us while guiding them to
become creative, self-sufficient and independent.
Our NHV programs are regularly revised or expanded to
ensure our residents receive care that promotes growth of the
whole person. If you have thoughts or wishes about special
goals for your loved one, please contact Donna Salak/QIDP at
[email protected]
Dr. Gonzalez will be missed
Some may not know this but he was the co-founder of Seven
Rivers Community Hospital. For our community he gave our
residents many years of service with love and affection. His
skills as a physician was only over shadowed by his dedication
to our residents and the many staff members he treated over the
years. He met the challenge of treating a population, many of
whom are nonverbal and often noncompliant and were able to
diagnose the most subtle complaints and illnesses. He passed
Sunday, May 26, 2013. You are in our hearts “Dr. G”.
The staff on House 5 has been working with Robert to use his blind
cane. He is making progress and walking short distances with the
cane. Way to go Robert!

Summer fun and warm goodbye on House One
Well we started May out with a bang with our own fabulous MayFest! Everyone had a wonderful time with great food, fun games
and a water slide! How can you not have fun when you are sharing all this with staff, friends and of course family members?
Thanks again Scott and Lois Griener for making MayFest something we look forward to every year! We had one of our
housemates Kirsten graduate from Crest! She is now attending our ATF, New Horizons Learning Center and seems to be
adjusting quite nicely. Kirsten has also joined Special Olympics Swimming and is proud to be a part of the swim team.
Congratulations Kirsten! We had a birthday in May! JoAnn’s birthday was on May 13th. She had two parties; one here at New
Horizons and one at home with her mom, dad and family. Happy Birthday JoAnn! Then we ended May with a great Memorial
Day Cookout and Pool Party! Everyone had fun and ate a lot. Thank you to the Dietary staff for such good food! We then started
June with a birthday. Kirsten’s birthday was on June 9th. She had two parties; one here at New Horizons Village and one at home
with her mom, dad and family. Happy Birthday Kirsten! We had another birthday this month. Toni’s birthday was on June 13th.
Toni was happy with just one party here at New Horizons Village, but she was very excited because her mom called her on her
birthday from North Carolina and also her sister Diane called her from Port St. Lucie, Florida. Happy Birthday Toni! Last but
certainly not least, everyone would like to thank Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church for the great week we had at their camp, which
started June 17th and ended June 21st. We all had a great time and learned a lot in faith and fellowship!
In between all this joy and happiness, we unfortunately had to say good-bye to our dear housemate Juanita. We will all miss her
big, bright smile and her “Hi Momma” as you enter House One! If there are coloring books and a deck of cards in heaven, Juanita
is very happy now. We will deeply miss Juanita, but she is joining her friend Mary in heaven and they both will forever hold a
special place in our hearts!
Enjoying life on House Two
In May House 2 adventured over to KFC in Crystal River for fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and soft drinks. As the month
got hotter we all cruised over to Burger King in Inverness for milk shakes and ice cream. As we walked into Burger King an
elderly military veteran asked us if we needed any help. We told him we were fine, but thanks for offering. Upon leaving we
passed by the vet and his wife while they ate and he told us all what a great job we were doing and thanked all our staff for what
we do. We all thanked him for his service, too. Our housemate Tom sought excitement with his family when they vacationed at
Disney World and hit up some crazy rides! As we entered June, House 2 had a craving for pizza, so we took a drive to Pizza Hut
in Crystal River where everyone enjoyed pizza, bread sticks and soda. Wayne W. had a nice visit at the fire station where he
dropped off some dog biscuits. The end of June brought some pretty nasty weather, but the stormy conditions did not stop our
dessert outing, it just altered the location. Dairy Queen was going to have to wait for another day. So we made a quick stop at
Burger King in Crystal River. We liked the desserts there so much last month, we had to go back to try the Oreo Brownie
Sundaes!

All winners on House Three
We have begun the month of June by winning the Team Flag! Congratulations to staff on House 3 for all your hard work to make
this happen. The month of May began with MayFest which we all enjoyed with the clowns, great music, face painting and much
more. Spending time with our family and friends is always a good time. The residents have started several new goals that are
engaging them in social activities; one of our ladies sets the table every day. Wonderful job! We have bought some flowers that
we are excited to plant at our home to nurture and watch them grow. With the warm weather everyone on the house is excited to
enjoy our pool these days. We enjoyed our Fourth of July barbeque!
Lots of fun on House Four
May was an especially exciting month for our house. Monique won the gold and bronze medals in Special Olympics Track and
Field. Congratulations Monique! Dinner at Hardee’s was lots of fun as a family sharing the events of our day over a good meal.
The Memorial Day Cookout and Pool Party as well as MayFest were a blast! A special “thank you” to the Greiners and the
Dietary staff for making these events special! If you were not there you missed some good fun with friends and family. Suzanne
had a home visit where there was a family reunion. She loves to see her family! June has been filled with lots of activities and
outings too. We all had a great time shopping at Bealls. We went to Inglis with our family from House 1 for a picnic. It was a
nice sunny day! Our house also had a picnic at Little Spring where we all enjoyed the outdoors and the fresh air. We ate dinner at
Moschello’s where we all enjoyed a pizza together. Larry Joe, Debbie and Monique had a blast at camp this year. We are all
looking forward to the rest of the summer’s fun activities to come!
The adventures of House Five
In May we celebrated our new family member’s birthday, Jason and we showed him how we have our birthday blowouts. We
also celebrated Tony’s birthday in the month of May. A special thanks to Lee for decorating the house like no one else. After two
birthday bash blowouts our family still had enough energy for a healthy dinner at our local Subway. Talk about building your own
sub! We were going to have a picnic at Whispering Pines Park but our guys decided to change to the Little Wooden Park due to
the sun being hot and it being closer to home. Following our healthy eating we decided we deserved a little break at Dunkin
Donuts where the donuts were fresh. In June we threw Casey a birthday bash which included a solo song by fellow family
member Phillip who sang Happy Birthday to Casey while playing his guitar. This was a treat for everyone! Later we indulged in
a picnic by the beach at Ft. Island Trail where we enjoyed the peace and quiet. Misdirection did not set us back when we ventured
out to Wendy’s in Inverness and neither did a rainy day wash out our decision in picking out desserts at Publix where we cooled
down with a slice from heaven with ice cream cake. Hope you had a nice Fourth of July!
Enjoying life on House Six
We have been very busy enjoying the warm weather and swimming in the pool. This is always a great way to begin the summer!
Tim brought home two medals from Special Olympics Track and Field and now he is busy with swimming practice for an
upcoming Special Olympics swim competition. Summer Camp was a blast this year, everyone really enjoyed themselves. Great
job MaryLouise! As a family we dined at Little Joey’s and had ice cream at Dairy Queen. Gail went to Neon Leon’s and listened
to the one man band playing Zydeco music. He had the best time. For Patrick’s birthday dinner he took his ladies, Dorothy,
Karen and Kim out. Every year they enjoy each other’s company over a nice meal while celebrating his birthday. Something that
Denise looks forward to is going home for a visit. We hope you all have a great summer!!
Recreation highlights
May and June are busy months. Summer fever is in the air and thoughts of MayFest and camp were on everyone’s mind. The
weather was a bit iffy for MayFest but cleared up and the day turned out perfect! Maintenance and the ATF staff put in a lot of
hard work to really make the games a success this year. We had Nerf footballs flying and water blasters blasting. It was the most
participation we have ever had in the games. X-treme Fun set up a tent for shade and a water slide that was the perfect spot to
cool off if you were not in the pool. Toni and Bonnie did a great job keeping everyone safe at the pool during the festivities. The
food was grilled; hot dogs and hamburgers, Cynthia as the master griller got plenty of advice and help from Terri. The Dietary
staff out did themselves this year with homemade coleslaw, baked beans, corn on the cob and bowtie pasta that was delicious. We
always had an anniversary cake and this 7th MayFest was no exception but with a new twist; a huge banana split cake! Yummy!
Memorial Day was a picnic and pool party with rib sandwiches and all the fixings along with ice cream bars for dessert. Off to
Special Olympics Track and Field, our cyclist competed at State level. Tony won a gold medal, Paul won 2 gold medals, Monique
won a gold medal for the softball throw and Tim won a gold medal. Tim was selected as athlete of the year and Duane as coach of
the year for Citrus County. Congratulations guys! June was the start of Special Olympics Golf and Swim practice. We are up to
20 or more golfers and swimmers. A big thank you to Scott Greiner for the use of the pool and Miriam and Troy for the use of 7
Rivers Golf and Country Club. We also went to Bicentennial Park to practice swimming in their pool that is a full 25 meters in
length with lane lines. Camp 7 Rivers was great fun again this year. The theme was Kingdom Rock with music and skits each
day. Everyone got their picture made with a king’s robe and crown sitting on a throne. This included going to Lego Land on
Monday, Manatee Lanes on Tuesday, Wild Waters on Wednesday, Easy St. on Thursday and a movie and Fat Boy’s catered lunch
for the finale on Friday. Hope everyone had a Happy Fourth of July!

Learning and growing at the ATF
Having fun in Classroom 1
We had a great month in May. We worked on a very fun project that took all of May; the story book of the Very Hungry
Caterpillar. The residents had lots of fun learning about the different foods and learning the days of the week. It was a very nice
project! The month of June was a very busy month, also. We went on a class picnic to Wallace Brooks Park. We had a lot fun
with camp week. The month just flew by. Classroom 1 would like to say happy Fourth of July to everyone and we look forward
to the classroom projects planned for July!

Active and learning in Classroom 2
It is starting to get warmer! We are all so happy about that. May Fest was a blast! The week before was Celebration Week. Every
day we dressed up. Our favorite day, of course, was PJ Day! We watched movies, played games and made crafts! Our class went
on a picnic outing. It was such a fun day. We walked the trail and over the bridges. We sang songs and enjoyed our delicious
lunch provided by our Dietary staff. Thanks ladies! We have started our special outings; Joe took Phillip to Kennedy Space
Center. He was amazed by the sights and even taught Joe a few things. We are taking small groups out based on their interests.
We have visited the Florida Aquarium, Clearwater Marine Aquarium (where Winter the dolphin lives) and Wonderworks Museum
for our Boy Scout Troop. They earned a special patch for visiting the museum. We have many more trips planned for the next
few months. Our next trip is to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! We just finished up our camp week. Twenty-one clients went to
Camp Seven Rivers and went on trips afterwards. They got to go to Lego Land and a water park! Everyone else attended Camp
NHV. We had sensory activities, carnival games, movies and a water fight. Everyone had so much fun. Stay cool until next time.
Staying busy in Classroom 3
We have been very busy in May and June! We started the beginning of May learning about the different types of big vehicles;
like the fire truck and the police car. In the middle of May we learned about the animals that live in the African plains. Everyone
loved learning about the lion and even showing us how the lion roars! During the week of Memorial Day, we talked about the
different activities we do in the summer. Everyone could not wait to swim and eat ice cream as the weather gets hotter! In June
we learned about life on the farm. During the week of summer camp we had a game day, sensory day, wet field day, carnival day
and a movie day. Everyone seemed to love the sensory day the most! In July we are looking forward to learning about city life.
Greetings From the Workshop
Welcome back to the Workshop! We have traveled down to the deepest darkest oceans, to the mountains and the wetlands of
Florida. Our students explored a week of the mystical creatures. The class favorite was the all mighty unicorn. We discovered
mermaids are real! They say legends are lessons! Our class went through the history of Florida and traveled back to the
foundation of our great state. One full week of camp: We were able to travel to the land of Legos then the wild and wet water
park. We went bowling and bowled until we could not bowl any longer! We took a walk down Easy Street. We played an arcade
full of games and we rode go-carts with nothing but the open road in front of us. To finish an incredible week, we relaxed with a
movie with our friends from Seven Rivers Church and at Sonny’s Barbecue. The beginning of our summer was great. I can only
imagine what the rest of it holds for us! Until then, we will be busy exploring the rest of what Florida has to offer. See ya around!
