For these TCH flashcards, I’ve included a variety of different types
of words, so you can focus on those (or do a mini-lesson using
them) if you’d like.
There are:
• 6 simple TCH words: watch, catch, witch, match, hatch, patch.
• 3 TCH words with beginning blends: crutch, blotch, stitch
• 8 plural TCH words (adding ‘ES’ rather than ‘S’):) catches,
hatches, witches, matches, patches, crutches, blotches,
stitches. These are a mixture of nouns and verbs, so you can
use them to teach both plurals and verb tenses.
• 4 TCH verbs with ‘ing’ endings: stitching, catching, hatching,
patching
• 4 compound words: matchbox, pitchfork, stopwatch, eyepatch
I often use different groups of words to review the ‘tch’ phoneme
on different days. I might start with simple TCH words on Day 1,
moving to plurals, verb endings and compound words on
subsequent days, depending on student readiness. Different words
can also be used with different reading groups, if that is
appropriate for your class.
