Lunch Help Wanted
Thank you for another great year of learning. We have accomplished a lot this
year and will be looking forward to many new things next year. We will have a
new language arts curriculum known as Ready Gen and will dedicate much of
our professional development toward implementation. We will continue with our
new Science and Math curriculum. We have made a concerted effort to keep
kids in the core classrooms more by providing push in services and support. We
will continue to establish Positive Behavior Expectations. This year we have
established common expectations in hallways, cafeteria, bathrooms, playground,
bus, and assemblies through the use of our Respectful, Responsible and Safe
language. We will continue to build on our system of supports for academics and
behaviors in the new year. Thank you for your continued support from home.

KINDERGARTEN
KORNER
Our last month in Kindergarten will be a lot
of fun! Our chicks will be hatching soon
and the kindergarten kids have had a
great time learning about the life cycle.
We will finish up some special writing and
science activities, work on composing and
decomposing numbers in math, and enjoy
our time with your awesome kids! We
have learned so much this year.
Remember to read and practice your math
facts over the summer. See you in the fall!
FIRST GRADE FROLICS
Another month of exciting learning has
passed by in First Grade. We made some
colorful kites describing everything we love
about Spring. In Math, we continue to work
on addition and subtraction facts, using a
variety of strategies to increase both
speed and accuracy. To help your child
with speed in computations, please
practice these facts at home by
encouraging them to do Xtra Math. We’ve
also been studying measurement and the
topic on Telling Time is up next! Our
students have really done a great job
grasping these harder mathematical
concepts in our math series. The final
paper our students will be writing is an
opinion paper. They should have a lot to
write about their favorite restaurant! In
Science, the final scope we will be
discussing is on “Communication.” Stay
tuned for more information about that!
Please make sure to save the date for the
Writing Celebration on Friday, May 12th!
As you can tell, there is not a minute to
spare when you are in First Grade at
Spring Hills!

SECOND GRADE
SEGMENTS
Well we’ve finally made it! The end of the
year is fast approaching, and there’s lots
going on as always.
The beginning of May featured the spring
MAP and Fastbridge tests. These are the
same tests that the kids took in the fall and
winter, but their scores should rise since
they’ve learned so much this year.
The last week of school also brings about
our annual Math Fact Fest. Each class
will find their 5 best Math fact students.
The top 5 from each class will face each
other in the finals, while their classmates
cheer them on.
It’s important that your child continues to
practice their Math facts over the summer.
They should also continue to read at least
15 minutes every day. We don’t want them
to forget all that they’ve learned this year.
Have a great summer!
THIRD GRADE
THOUGHTS
We are so proud of how well the 3rd grade
students have done this year, and all the
growth we’ve seen in Reading, Math,
Science and Writing. Please remember
that your student can stay sharp for fourth
grade by reading a minimum of 20 minutes
a day and by practicing for 5 minutes a
day on their math facts a day over the
summer. Join the summer reading
program at the library, read a book
together as a family, or have your child
count out change for a treat at the pool.
Daily learning can be built right into
summer fun! Most of all, the third grade
teachers would like to thank you for your
support this year. We are grateful for the
wonderful Room Parents who gave of their
time to chaperone field trips and run
parties. We are also grateful for those of
you that supported your child’s education
by helping with homework, keeping up
with the assignment notebooks, and
making sure your child came to school
with all that they needed to

be successful. Your support has been
crucial. Have a wonderful summer with
your family.
FOURTH GRADE FACTS
It is hard to believe how quickly 2016-17
has passed. As we look back, it is
amazing to see the amount of progress
the fourth graders have made. They have
learned larger digit multiplication, long
division, and fractions. They have learned
to be detectives while reading by make
inferences and finding evidence that
supports their answers. They have
learned patience and kindness, and how
to really persevere and do their best! They
definitely deserve a big round of applause!
At this time, we would like to thank all the
parents who’ve helped out and
collaborated with us this year. Without
your commitment, we couldn’t have made
this year a success.
During the summer, keep your child
reading by joining the summer library
program. Have fun visiting museums,
zoos and other educational or historical
places. Limit their screen time, and make
sure they play outside a LOT!!! Don’t
forget to have them practice their math
facts. We are looking forward to seeing
our future fifth graders next year.
FIFTH GRADE FORUM
We are currently involved in our study of
the 1900’s in Social Studies class. We are
not only learning about the major events of
this time period, but are also discovering
the music, sports, inventions, presidents,
movies and many other aspects of each
decade. We will have our decade
presentation on May 18th. Your 5th grader
will bring home more information about
this in May.
In Language Arts, we have been
researching our decades. We will
incorporate some of what we are learning
about the different decades into
informative paragraphs, and some of them
will be presented on stage during our
decades performances.
Spring Hills School Newsletter
In Science, we have been studying
magnitude and absolute magnitude in
stars. We will then be investigating how
and why shadows of objects change
throughout the day.
Thank you to all of the parents who have
helped us with our end of the year
activities. We couldn’t have accomplished
everything without your help.
P.E. POINTS
We have just finished a very interesting
month in P.E. at Spring Hills. The third,
fourth, and fifth graders enjoyed their roller
skating unit. The children all had fun and
improved their skills tremendously. I would
like to thank the volunteers who helped
make this a successful program.
This month we will be doing our
presidential fitness testing for second
through fifth grade. This will not be new to
most of the students, except the second
graders. I have discussed the test with the
second grade students and explained the
test and the results needed for the
different awards. We have practiced most
of the test in class over the past few
weeks. I wish all the children the best on
the test.
MUSIC NOTES
The music room is busy as usual as we
finish up another terrific year.

music.
3rd

MEDIA CENTER
SHS students in grades 3-5 now have
access to eBooks through eRead Illinois.
This will allow students to check out books
to be read on their Chromebooks or
another device. Audiobooks are also
available; however, those have to be
played through a (free) app called Axis360
on a phone or iPod. Please see Mrs.
DeForest with any questions.
Destiny Library: All students in grades 35 are able to log in to Destiny, our online
library catalog. The website is bookmarked
on their Chromebooks. From here,
students can create book lists, place a
hold on a book, or even renew a book!
How it works:
1. Go to
http://spring12.axis360.bakertaylor.com.
2. Log in using the school
username/password (ex:
aastudent, 123456). Students
new to the district this year will
have gs in front of the number.
3. Pick a book and click Check Out.
4. Select Read Now in Browser.
Checkouts are for 22 days.
