November, 2014 Volume 102 Issue 1 There’s a cable TV show called “MYTHBUSTERS” that you may have seen. They take something that people commonly say is true and subject the statement to a series of tests to see if it is, in fact, true. If you drop a penny off of the Empire State Building, would it gather so much speed that it would be a lethal weapon? Can a hurricane-force wind really blow a piece of pine straw through a tree, where it would be hanging out both sides? That sort of thing. What if there was a spiritual MYTHBUSTERS show that tested some of the things people say are true about God? People say stuff all the time. Others repeat it. Some of these things are comforting. But if they are not true, but in fact false, well, that would be important to know, wouldn’t it? That would be possibly life-saving to know! Some things people say about spiritual things aren’t that big a deal: “Cleanliness is next to godliness.” Or, “God helps those who help themselves.” But here are some critical ones that many people say and seem to believe: “The problem isn’t me”, or “God wants me to be happy”, or “God won’t ultimately judge anyone.” These things are all over the place in our culture; are they true? Our next series of messages will take on some of these tough questions, and we will see together if these things are myths—or true! Jesus, of course, will be our Chief MYTHBUSTER. He is the “true light that gives light to every man” (John 1:9), and He, alone, comes from the Father “full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) He said of Himself, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) We’ll let Him be our guide in these questions! And you and me will serve alongside Him, investigating as MYTHBUSTERS with Him. I hope you’ll join us for this series! There’s a great responsibility placed on me, as a Pastor and Teacher, to believe and speak the truth. But the responsibility on you for the same thing is there, too. “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”(Acts 17:11). Be a Berean! Be a MYTHBUSTER! Thank you for being a part of our ministry for Christ at LCC. Pray for our church daily. Even if you can't physically be there there are ways you can still help! Please keep this local mission in your daily prayers. Goodfriends is not just for the ‘older folks’! We invite anyone who is available on any of our scheduled dates to join us for our outings! We encourage you to come and hang out with us…rather you are Young, or Not-So-Young, Young at Heart or Young in Spirit… It doesn’t matter if you are 30+ or 80+, we’ve got something you will enjoy… We have some kind of outing each month September thru July. You can pick up a copy of the Goodfriends calendar at the Welcome Center in the sanctuary foyer. On Thursday, October 16th, we had 13 Goodfriends take a short road trip to Alto, GA to visit Fort Hollingsworth – White House. This pioneer fort was built in 1793. Originally located in the Cherokee Nation, the boundary lines were re-drawn several times as Franklin County, then Habersham County, and finally Banks County. It is a wonderful place to visit and hear about the history of the fort from the sisters who were raised in the house and have spent time restoring it for others to see. We had a short tour of the property given by Willette, and then we enjoyed a bountiful lunch prepared by the 4 sisters. We feasted on Chicken and Dumplings, Pork Tenderloin, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Cole Slaw, Fresh Tomatoes, Rolls and then topped it off with Apple Crisp and Strawberry Delight! After lunch, the eldest sister, Edith ‘Jim’ shared some stories of their childhood. We laughed out loud as she told about country life with 7 siblings. Willette is a local artist and gave away a print of one of her pieces. Vicki Levy–Harrison was sitting in the lucky seat and took home the prize. Some of us enjoyed sitting on the porch in rocking chairs, while others walked around the various buildings. It was a wonderful way to spend a cool Fall day! The property is currently owned by a non-profit called ‘Friends of the Fort’. North Georgia Christian Camp offers a variety of Fall retreats that target each age group. Retreats are short, intensive weekends that offer campers a chance to grow in their relationship with God through fellowship, small groups, and worship. With the stress and challenges of a new school year, fall retreats are a great way to escape the everyday life and reconnect with God in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia. Special thanks to those who made financial contributions so we could provide scholarships for several students to attend. KUC ANNUAL COOKIE BAKE Saturday, December 13th 10:00-12:00 MARK YOUR CALENDAR now for one of our favorite events. Kids will get to roll cookie dough, cut out cookie shapes and then decorate their cookies with icing and sprinkles after they bake. If you plan to help with this event, please let Ms. Robyn know. We will also need to borrow your rolling pins too. KUC PROCEDURE CHANGE Due to the growing number of children on Wednesday nights, parents will need to walk their children to the KUC counter and check them in for the Wednesday program. Check-in begins at 6:25 (no earlier). All children going to HW Help will need to sign in with Ms Robyn during the meal. Our Youth Christmas Musical is well under way, but it’s not too late for your child to join the group. We practice each Sunday morning at 9:45 and on Wednesday nights at 6:30. This year’s program includes songs, speaking parts and choreography, so there is much to learn. PLEASE make it a priority to have your child at as many practices as possible. If you have not made a donation to help cover the costs of the costumes and the listening CD’s, please do so soon. Each child needs to wear black pants, a short-sleeved, plain, white T-SHIRT and a black, men’s neck tie. We also ask that they wear black shoes (no noisy shoes with heels please).
