Assessment Activity: The Inquiry Group reviewed the Association of American Colleges and Universities
(AACU) recommended rubrics for the assessment of student learning related to oral communication
skills to develop a common rubric for use in assessing those skills across the curriculum.
Establishment of a Common Rubric
Based on an evaluation of the AACU rubric for evaluating student learning related to oral
communication skills, the inquiry group developed a rubric to be distributed to faculty to assess SLOs
related to public speaking and communication. The rubric is in excel format and assists faculty in
assessing student learning outcomes related to oral communication (see snapshot example on following
page.
Application
o The common oral communication skills assessment rubric was distributed to faculty through
the Instruction Council.
o The rubric created by the inquiry group was piloted in multiple biology courses for use in
evaluating student oral communication skills.
