The 46th Carolina Angus Futurity is Dedicated
to Dr. Larry W. Olson, PhD
Larry W. Olson was raised on an Oklahoma cattle and wheat farm in the northwest corner of Osage County - which is the southern end
of the Flint Hills and Cow Country. He is well educated with degrees from:
Oklahoma State University - BS - Animal Science
University of Nebraska – MS, PhD and Post-Doctorate - Animal Breeding
University of Wisconsin – Post-Doctorate – Animal Breeding
US Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska – Systems Analyst
Dr. Olson started as Clemson University’s State Extension Beef Cattle Specialist at the Edisto Research & Education Center on May 1,
1980 a position from which he retired on September 15, 2010, after 31 years. During his time there, Dr. Olson wrote the SC Beef Cattle
Improvement Program and created the performance records database. He conducted 30 annual Edisto Beef Cattle Field Days. In 1982,
he built the grazing-based Edisto Forage Bull Test program and managed 27 tests and sales. The Edisto Forage Bull Test was one of the
first central bull tests with EPD’s in the monthly bull weigh reports, a web site, weigh reports online and sale catalogs online. After its’
success, he was asked to help 12 states and organizations in the Southeast and Southwest develop grazing-based bull test programs. In
1998, Dr. Olson became the Clemson Bull Testing Program Coordinator in charge of the Clemson Bull Test, Clemson Heifer Sale and
Edisto Forage Bull Test. He also created the Clemson Beef Cattle Information Database, which is a web-based beef cattle information
database for cattlemen and extension agents. BEEF magazine recognized it in August, 2008 as the #1 contacted internet beef cattle site
out of 1.75 million beef cattle websites.
He served as the Edisto Research & Education Center beef cattle program leader from 1998 to 2010. In April 2000, Dr. Olson started
the registered Angus herd at Clemson’s Edisto Research & Education Center with donations of sale credit by Sand Hills Angus in its
dispersal sale. This was followed with donations of cows, sale credit, semen and embryos from Sand Hills Angus, Black Crest Farms,
Steve McPhail II, Cedar Creek Farm, Triple R Ranch, Alexander Angus, High View Farms, ABS Global, Glendale Angus Farm, Black
Grove, Sandy Springs Farm, Wehrmann Angus, Fink Beef Genetics, Partisover Ranch and personal purchases over the next ten years.
Personal purchases were from the SC Angus Futurity, Black Crest Farm and Cedar Creek Farm sales.
In addition to his university contributions, Dr. Olson worked with Congaree Farms, Yon Family Farms, Black Crest Farm and Tokeena
Angus to establish and conduct on-farm bull tests and sales. He has also worked with the Saluda County Cattlemen’s Association for all
24 years of the annual replacement heifer sale.
Dr. Olson was a member of the Beef Improvement Federation’s central test committee for 20 years and he received the prestigious BIF
Continuing Service award in 2012.
Olson Cattle Research is a registered Angus herd started after retirement as a cooperator herd
at Black Crest Farm in October, 2010. In October 2015, OCR became a cooperator herd at Yon
Family Farms.
“Dr. Larry” was elected to the SC Angus Association Board of Directors in 2012 and currently
serves as President of the SC Angus Association and the Salkehatchie Cattlemen’s Association.
In addition to Angus, he does make time for another passion. Since catching that 9.5 lb bass with
a blue and chrome Rebel topwater minnow on May 31, 1980, there has been a lot of bass fishing.
The fishing approach has dramatically changed from no boat, one worn out spin-cast reel and a
handful of tackle. He now fishes farm ponds out of his sixth boat, with a 60” truck tool box for
a tackle box and 6 rod and reels. In 36 years of fishing primarily SC farm ponds, he has caught
164 bass weighing 6+ lbs - including 9 – 10’s and 3 – 11’s. The last 5 year averages are 84 days
and 1,056 bass. Larry says, “Some days you get really lucky and can look at cows and fish at the
same time.” Passing down his habit, the seven great nieces and nephews get fishing tackle for
Christmas and special fishing days when Uncle Larry visits Oklahoma during June or July each
summer.
