Korean Meal Program Launches in Howard County
by Guy Arceneaux, Senior Director, Marketing & Communications
n Tuesday, February 7, 2017, Stephanie Archer-Smith,
Executive Director of Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland (MOWCM); Maryland’s First Lady, Yumi
Hogan; County Executive of Howard County Allan H.
Kittleman; MOWCM’s Board President Gary Peisach; and
Board Vice President David. L. Vosvick, II, cut the ribbon
at the Bethany Korean United Methodist Church to launch
the new Korean Meal Program in Howard County that has
been generously funded by BGE.
Ms. Archer-Smith commented, “The Korean Meal
Program has been under development for some time
and is unique—the menu is drawn from traditional
Korean home-cooked meals and meals are delivered by
Korean-speaking volunteers. It took many people to
make it happen. We thank BGE for their generous
support, a community grant that pays fully for the first
20 clients enrolled in this program. It is with the
far-sightedness of corporate and community partners
like BGE and Bethany Korean United Methodist
Church, that much goodwill is generated. We welcome

Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Friends,
A
s I collect my thoughts for this letter,
I think about the fullness of our spring
calendar. Spring bears the glad tidings from
a prior season’s work. The same is true for our
organization—months of planning have seen
multiple projects bearing fruit.
After lengthy negotiations with the Korean
community in Howard County, we are happy to
see a solid plan emerge for a Korean home-delivered meal program. So many
people have been involved—ministers, potential clients, staff, Korean food
caterers and, of course, our sponsor, BGE. This program began service in
February, like a crocus that bursts through the snow pack, a harbinger of spring.
Another project emerging from months of hard work involves a collaboration
with both Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and Johns Hopkins Bayview.
The Social Investment Bond (SIB Project puts Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland services squarely in the realm of health care. Nutrition and health as a
part of our mission has always been important. It is one of the more than a
meal™ services we refer to in our brand’s tagline.
As part of the SIB Project, client volunteer interactions will be recorded and
monitored and documented as indicators of their health status. The claim we
make about our meal programs being a valuable link to wellness will now be
backed up by accurate and exhaustive metrics. The opportunity to replicate and
scale this is the model of true community-based medicine.
We have much to be grateful for as we look forward to a busy spring and yet
many challenges ahead. We thank you for your continued support and interest in
our organization. May your spring bloom with positive outcomes. During this
time of budget uncertainty, it is needed more than ever.
My Best Regards,
Stephanie Archer-Smith

FUNd-RAISE—do it your way!
The birds will soon be chirping and
the flowers will soon be budding, and
there is no better time to engage
your family and friends at home or
at work to FUNd-RAISE for Meals
on Wheels of Central Maryland! Each
$8 that is raised provides a meal for a
homebound senior or disabled person.
$320 provides meals for a month.
Assemble a team to raise $4,000, which
provides a client’s meals for a year!
Along with the delivery of the
meals comes a friendly visit and a
wellness check that make it possible
for individuals to remain healthy
and living in their homes, safely
and independently. By conducting

opportunity to provide much-needed
nutrition, vital social connections and
support for a month or even a year to

money to support our cause. And
what a great feeling it is to know that

your community
The FUNd-raising ideas can be
as simple as getting family and
friends together to have a friendly
competition of bicycling, walking or
even pushups, and get sponsors to
donate money for milestones reached
or fun completed! If you work in an
office where business attire is required,
get the office involved and select one
day a month or even a week and ask
everyone to donate $8 (one client’s
meal) in exchange for wearing those
comfortable jeans and tennis
shoes to work.
Each $8 donation makes a
great difference in the daily lives of
your homebound neighbors in

Five Essential Nutrients for Older Americans
by Kathy Tinker, Senior Director, Nutritional Services
A
s we age, our bodies’ needs
change and so do our nutritional
needs. In order to optimize our
health, we need to ensure we get
enough of these key nutrients.
1. Calcium and Vitamin D: In order
to maintain bone health our bodies
need calcium and vitamin D.
Adults should have three servings
of food rich in vitamin D, such as
fortified low-fat or fat-free milk
each day. Foods that are also high
in these nutrients are yogurt,
fortified breakfast cereals, fortified
fruit juices and dark leafy greens
and vegetables. If you are taking a
calcium supplement, it is advised
to choose one that contains
vitamin D as well.
2. Vitamin B12: Most people past
age 50 do not get enough B12.
Fortified cereal, lean cuts of meat
and fish will help you obtain the
right amount of B-12. It helps
make DNA, nerve and blood cells,
and is crucial for a healthy brain
and immune system. Your
metabolism wouldn’t run
smoothly without it.
3. Fiber: Fiber offers many nutritional
benefits including promoting
healthy bowels, preventing heart
disease and Type 2 diabetes and
maintaining a healthy weight.
Whole grains, beans, vegetables
and fruits are good sources of fiber.
4. Potassium: To help lower blood
pressure, an increased intake of
potassium along with a decreased
intake of sodium is recommended.
Milk, yogurt, fruits and vegetables
are good sources of this important
nutrient.
5. Fats: A diet low in saturated and
trans fats is important for reducing
the risk of heart disease. Check the
nutrition facts panel to ensure that
the foods you eat are low in these
types of fats and choose chicken,
turkey and fish more often than
red meat.
Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland menus are developed by
registered dietitians to ensure each
meal contains essential nutrients and
promote good health.

He has put himself through undergraduate school

Nick came on board with MOWCM in September of
2016. It is evident to MOWCM colleagues that he is
unflappable and has a passion to make things work
better for everyone.
After years in the food industry and several years
managing two transportation services, he saw the
position here at MOWCM as his dream job.
Not only does it involve two areas from his operational
experience, food and transportation, but it has a third
component that he felt was missing—contributing to
the greater good.
Nick is thankful that this job has worked out he said,
“The mission and the people at MOWCM are the nicest
to work with, and there is the sense that we are all on the
same team.”
He is excited by the new opportunities he sees for
the drivers.
A test group is being trained on the use of tablets
this summer which will eventually roll out to all drivers.
The move to tablets to record deliveries and route
changes is part of an overall strategic plan for MOWCM,
to use technology to improve service.
We all welcome Nick Kirley to Meals on Wheels of

A Few Words About SNAP

doing everything possible to ensure
our clients have the food they need
to thrive. That goes well beyond just
delivering meals.
Many of the seniors and disabled
adults we serve struggle to afford
food. Some try to stretch the lunch
and dinner we bring them five days a
week, to cover breakfast and weekend
meals, too. Others redirect money
needed for utilities or medicine to pay
for food, taking half the medicines
their doctors prescribe or living in
apartments that are too hot or cold
for their comfort. Many buy the
cheapest foods they can to fill up
on—even if those foods lack
nutritional value.
Many Don’t Know They
Qualify for the Program
The Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program (formerly called
Food Stamps) could help, but
shocklingly, many seniors who are
eligible for SNAP, never apply. Some
simply don’t know about the program.
Others don’t think they are eligible or
find the idea of going through the
application process overwhelming.
Getting the Word Out About

What is expected of Friendly
Companions?
Friendly Companions are matched with
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland
clients and spend an hour or so, two
times a month with the client, as well
as make weekly phone contact.
The visiting times are arranged
by the client and the companion.
Companions offer a connection to the
outside world and help reduce isolation.
Some of our friendly companions read
to their client, play games or even share
life stories. These are just a few of the
pleasant ways to spend time with
a client and develop a rewarding
personal relationship.
Other ways Friendly
Companions help:
• Sharing/discussing an article
from the newspaper
• Talking about sports
• Playing cards or board games
• Making a pot of coffee or tea
How to get started as
a Friendly Companion
Friendly Companions are asked
to attend a volunteer information
orientation—held every Tuesday from
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Meals on Wheels
of Central Maryland’s offices at:
515 South Haven St. Baltimore, Md.
21224. E-mail or call to reserve your
spot. Walk-ins are welcome.
The commitment for this program
is a minimum of one year, so that a
strong rapport with the client can
be developed.

This family-friendly event is a great way to spend Father’s Day with
the people you love.
Compete individually, on a relay team or as a father/child team.
When you compete and/or donate, you assist individuals in
your community to live independently at home by receiving nutritious meals,
companion connections that reduce isolation, grocery shopping assistance and more.
We hope to see you there.
