Kittleman; MOWCM’s Board President Gary Peisach; and Board Vice President David. L. Vosvick, II, cut the ribbon at the Bethany Korean United Methodist Church to launch the new Korean Meal Program in Howard County that has been generously funded by BGE. Ms. Archer-Smith commented, “The Korean Meal Program has been under development for some time and is unique—the menu is drawn from traditional Korean home-cooked meals and meals are delivered by Korean-speaking volunteers. It took many people to make it happen. We thank BGE for their generous support, a community grant that pays fully for the first 20 clients enrolled in this program. It is with the far-sightedness of corporate and community partners like BGE and Bethany Korean United Methodist Church, that much goodwill is generated. Battye at home through the provision of Charitable Trust nutritious meals, personal contact Kitchen and related services. Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends, A s I collect my thoughts for this letter, I think about the fullness of our spring calendar. Spring bears the glad tidings from a prior season’s work. The same is true for our organization—months of planning have seen multiple projects bearing fruit. After lengthy negotiations with the Korean community in Howard County, we are happy to see a solid plan emerge for a Korean home-delivered meal program. So many people have been involved—ministers, potential clients, staff, Korean food caterers and, of course, our sponsor, BGE. This program began service in February, like a crocus that bursts through the snow pack, a harbinger of spring. Another project emerging from months of hard work involves a collaboration with both Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and Johns Hopkins Bayview. The Social Investment Bond (SIB Project puts Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland services squarely in the realm of health care. Nutrition and health as a part of our mission has always been important. It is one of the more than a meal™ services we refer to in our brand’s tagline. As part of the SIB Project, client volunteer interactions will be recorded and monitored and documented as indicators of their health status. The claim we make about our meal programs being a valuable link to wellness will now be backed up by accurate and exhaustive metrics. The opportunity to replicate and scale this is the model of true community-based medicine. We have much to be grateful for as we look forward to a busy spring and yet many challenges ahead. We thank you for your continued support and interest in our organization. May your spring bloom with positive outcomes. During this time of budget uncertainty, it is needed more than ever. In order to optimize our health, we need to ensure we get enough of these key nutrients. 1. Calcium and Vitamin D: In order to maintain bone health our bodies need calcium and vitamin D. Adults should have three servings of food rich in vitamin D, such as fortified low-fat or fat-free milk each day. Foods that are also high in these nutrients are yogurt, fortified breakfast cereals, fortified fruit juices and dark leafy greens and vegetables. If you are taking a calcium supplement, it is advised to choose one that contains vitamin D as well. 2. Vitamin B12: Most people past age 50 do not get enough B12. Fortified cereal, lean cuts of meat and fish will help you obtain the right amount of B-12. It helps make DNA, nerve and blood cells, and is crucial for a healthy brain and immune system. Your metabolism wouldn’t run smoothly without it. 3. Fiber: Fiber offers many nutritional benefits including promoting healthy bowels, preventing heart disease and Type 2 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight. Whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruits are good sources of fiber. 4. Potassium: To help lower blood pressure, an increased intake of potassium along with a decreased intake of sodium is recommended. Milk, yogurt, fruits and vegetables are good sources of this important nutrient. 5. Fats: A diet low in saturated and trans fats is important for reducing the risk of heart disease. Check the nutrition facts panel to ensure that the foods you eat are low in these types of fats and choose chicken, turkey and fish more often than red meat. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland menus are developed by registered dietitians to ensure each meal contains essential nutrients and promote good health. McCormick Taylor, an engineering firm, began a partnership with Meals on Wheels five years ago with the first Chili Cook-off. As of this year, the fifth anniversary of the event, McCormick Taylor raised over $3,400. Employees make their best chili and everyone who wants to sample the recipes makes a $10 donation to the competition. Co-workers vote on the best overall chili, most unique chili, best use of condiments, and the most creative name and sign. More recently, a dessert competition was also added with categories such as the Best Overall Dessert, Most Unique Dessert and Best Looking Dessert. This annual event is a real favorite among staff. After learning more about the mission, four years ago, McCormick Taylor became a Corporate Lunch Bunch delivering meals, every other Tuesday, and giving over 300 volunteer hours and driving more than 1,000 miles—an estimated in-kind donation of over $8,800. McCormick Taylor’s commitment to Meals on Wheels runs deep. McCormick Taylor employees have also hit the runway in our Meals on Wheels Volunteer Fashion Show, sponsored by Boscov’s; they have collected shelf-stable food items for our Blizzard Bags, which help to provide an extra safety net to clients during the winter months and they have been a loyal Hats & Horses™ sponsor for five years running. In recognition of the impact of Meals on Wheels’ mission and McCormick Taylor’s dedication to that mission, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland was honored this year at the company’s Annual Awards Dinner as Charity of the Year. He has put himself through undergraduate school while working and is now in a very demanding LSU graduate course schedule from which he’ll graduate this spring with his MBA degree. Nick came on board with MOWCM in September of 2016. It is evident to MOWCM colleagues that he is unflappable and has a passion to make things work better for everyone. After years in the food industry and several years managing two transportation services, he saw the position here at MOWCM as his dream job. Not only does it involve two areas from his operational experience, food and transportation, but it has a third component that he felt was missing—contributing to the greater good. Nick is thankful that this job has worked out he said, “The mission and the people at MOWCM are the nicest to work with, and there is the sense that we are all on the same team.” He is excited by the new opportunities he sees for the drivers. A test group is being trained on the use of tablets this summer which will eventually roll out to all drivers. The move to tablets to record deliveries and route changes is part of an overall strategic plan for MOWCM, to use technology to improve service. We all welcome Nick Kirley to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and are glad that he is applying his business school insights on the job, every day. That goes well beyond just delivering meals. Many of the seniors and disabled adults we serve struggle to afford food. Some try to stretch the lunch and dinner we bring them five days a week, to cover breakfast and weekend meals, too. Others redirect money needed for utilities or medicine to pay for food, taking half the medicines their doctors prescribe or living in apartments that are too hot or cold for their comfort. Many buy the cheapest foods they can to fill up on—even if those foods lack nutritional value. Many Don’t Know They Qualify for the Program The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly called Food Stamps) could help, but shocklingly, many seniors who are eligible for SNAP, never apply. Some simply don’t know about the program. Others don’t think they are eligible or find the idea of going through the application process overwhelming. Getting the Word Out About SNAP is Part of Our Goal MOWCM is committed to helping our clients find out about, and successfully access, the benefits they qualify for and so desperately need. With grant funding from the USDA, we have an ongoing outreach program In their own words, our clients speak out… • MOWCM accepts SNAP in payment for meals to tell clients, and other seniors and disabled adults, about SNAP. Volunteers help by delivering verbal and written messages to our clients, and by letting staff know if they see someone they believe could benefit. Finally, our case workers and client liaisons are there to assist clients: following up on applications, assisting clients to collect the documentation they need, and providing the extra help needed to ensure that those who qualify, receive the help they need. The idea is to have trained volunteers report red flags and ensure, for example, that patients with congestive heart failure are weighing themselves regularly and eating properly. Dan Hale, who is leading the project from the hospital, said the meal delivery volunteers can help track patients’ health even months after discharge and keep them from returning to the hospital. “It makes sense financially,” he said.
