Chocolate or Stuffed Toy Bunnies and Chicks are Best for Easter Baskets
Sacramento, CA – Cuddly baby bunnies and chicks can be irresistible for Easter, but resist the
temptation to buy them for your children unless you have done your homework. Local shelters are
bombarded with thousands of unwanted adult rabbits and chickens every year when the reality of
caring for the animals sets in.
"After the Easter Holiday, we receive many unwanted rabbits that were given as gifts,” said Dave
Dickinson, Interim Director of the Sacramento County Animal Shelter. “Rabbits and chickens are
excellent pets for many people, but as with any decision to add a member to your family, research
and careful consideration are required. No matter how irresistible they may be, we advise people to
take the time to make the best choice for the animal and their home environment.”
Rabbits live as long as seven to ten years and require exercise space indoors and out, ample
socialization, and specialized cages and veterinary care. Rabbits thrive best living with other
rabbits, but must be spayed or neutered by a veterinarian to prevent their fast reproduction and
behavior issues.
Fuzzy yellow chicks mature into chickens that live from five to ten years. Though very popular in
rural areas, many times zoning laws exist regulating farm animals in populated areas. Chickens
need a proper habitat including roosting quarters, require specialized feed, vaccinations and
veterinary care, can be destructive to flower and vegetable gardens, and roosters are often a
nuisance to neighbors; all important considerations before making the decision to get Easter chicks.
Some questions to ask yourself before acquiring any animal:
Can I afford this pet including veterinary care, vaccinations, food, and housing?
Can I provide for specialized diet and housing needs?
Am I willing to care for this animal for the rest of its life?
Can I provide care during travel and vacations?
Do I have the time to train, socialize, and clean up after this pet?
Where will my family be in three years or five …will this animal be a good match?
