Date June 2016 | Vol. 1, Issue #1 WEWEN Newsletter Houston, Texas A League of the American Business Women’s Association Letter from the President OVERVIEW: American Business Women’s Association You may be surprised to know that The American Business Women’s Association was the genius of Hilary Bufton, Jr., a businessman! Established in Kansas City and now housed in Overland Park Kansas, Mr. Bufton and three Kansas City business women incorporated ABWA. On September 22, 1949, the story began, because, in his words, “It was my feeling all women were seeking and deserved equal business opportunities.” He later wrote, “They had gained tremendous business knowledge during World War II, through necessity, and Inside this issue: I felt a new organization for all businesswomen was needed.” ABWA is a not for profit organization, 501(c) 6 classification. Sixteen people around a table at The Egg & I Restaurant, brainstorming descriptive words expressing what we wanted to be; a force, a community supporter, with diverse businesses and students learning together, a game changer, a safe place where WE (all) WIN! Being on the ground floor of anything this special is an (almost scary!), once-in-a-lifetime event that has changed ABWA history, simultaneously changing every charter member’s history. WEWEN is on the map in so many ways. In the words of Rene’ Street, National Director of ABWA, “this is the largest ABWA new formation launch I have ever seen, and certainly in ABWA history.” In the words of a guest, as I escorted her into the room at the April luncheon, “They said this was a new networking meeting, but I’ve never seen such a big turnout at a networking meeting.” We have come so far, but have so much more to accomplish. My hopes are you are not a Joiner, but a Doer- giving us ideas, pitching in, and making WEWEN the perfect reflection of your expectations. Volunteer on a committee, be a delegate, work toward the Protégé Award, think about being on the Board next year, and give us feedback along the way. This is YOUR American Business Women’s Association league! Thank you to the Formation Team for your vision. Thank you to the extremely dedicated Board. 2 WEWEN NEWSLETTER – June 2016 | Vol. 1, Issue 1 Welcome to WEWEN 3 Arend Baker Becker Berube Blinka Michelle Jennifer Michelle Joyce Colleen Transamerica Financial Advisors Anytime Fitness Shots for Holly City of Jersey Village AXA Advisors, LLC Brace Bryant Carlisle ChenSharpe Collins Cook Cousins Cramer Cree Davis Deasy Dodds Carol Connie Donna University of Houston Downtown UP HCA Hospital Copration of America Mary Kay Cosmetics Lucy Eileen Rachel Sherry Natalie Christy Sue Joan Jennifer Ervin Estrada Angila Maria Frye Gaugl Guillory Hajduk Hale Harper Kaley Janice Rebekah Darlene Elizabeth Monica Harvey Henry Holmes Hugele Paula Vivian Marie Melanie Lakewood Eye Care Liberty Mutual Insurance Providence Title Tomball Trend Brand Solutions Amegy Bank SOS Scanning Service Lone Star College Premier Designs, Inc.
