A League of the American Business Women’s Association
Letter from the President
OVERVIEW: American Business Women’s Association
You may be surprised to know that The American Business Women’s Association was the
genius of Hilary Bufton, Jr., a businessman! Established in Kansas City and now housed in
Overland Park Kansas, Mr. Bufton and three Kansas City business women incorporated
ABWA.
On September 22, 1949, the story began, because, in his words, “It was my feeling all
women were seeking and deserved equal business opportunities.” He later wrote, “They
had gained tremendous business knowledge during World War II, through necessity, and

I felt a new organization for all businesswomen was needed.”

#WEWEN #thisisBIG #livingthemission
It started with goose bumps when we chose the name, Women Empowering Women Express Network, on January 17, 2016. Sixteen
people around a table at The Egg & I Restaurant, brainstorming descriptive words expressing what we wanted to be; a force, a
community supporter, with diverse businesses and students learning together, a game changer, a safe place where WE (all) WIN!
Being on the ground floor of anything this special is an (almost scary!), once-in-a-lifetime event that has changed ABWA history,
simultaneously changing every charter member’s history.
WEWEN is on the map in so many ways. In the words of Rene’ Street, National Director of ABWA, “this is the largest ABWA new
formation launch I have ever seen, and certainly in ABWA history.” In the words of a guest, as I escorted her into the room at the April
luncheon, “They said this was a new networking meeting, but I’ve never seen such a big turnout at a networking meeting.”
We have come so far, but have so much more to accomplish. My hopes are you are not a Joiner, but a Doer- giving us ideas, pitching in,
and making WEWEN the perfect reflection of your expectations. Volunteer on a committee, be a delegate, work toward the Protégé
Award, think about being on the Board next year, and give us feedback along the way. This is YOUR American Business Women’s
Association league! Thank you to the Formation Team for your vision. Thank you to the extremely dedicated Board.
