Term 3, August 2014 The termly newsletter for Goodtime Music Academy A Dream Come True In this issue: Dear Parents, Grandparents and Students, For a long time my dream has been to make high quality music tuition accessible to all children, not matter what background they come from or what decile their school is. I’ve also had the ambition to gather a team of musicians from all around the world and bring them here, to New Zealand, to see how fantastic our kids are and to help them experience the joys music can bring. At the end of June both my dreams came true. Last year I put some adverts online for a two week musical missionary camp in New Zealand and, to my amazement, we had over 70 applications. After an intensive interview process we accepted 11 people from the States, Canada, Austra- lia and from across the country. The group descended on Wellington over the penultimate weekend of June and gave me, hands down, the most fun, exhausting and rewarding two weeks of my life! We taught 500 children for free and performed 17 concerts in schools, churches, disabled centres, the Poly Festival and a Youth Prison. It was incredibly rewarding to see whole schools, along with their staff, dancing to the band and hearing some great positive messages from the team. Over the two weeks there was a heaps of laughter, some fantastic music and even a little bit of romance! A truly inspirational experience for all involved. A Dream Come True Calling all bands! Although there were heaps of people involved, I was particularly grateful for the support and hard work of Caleb Riordan, Andrew Galloway, Chris Lam Sam, Lynne JaggerHassett and, most of all, my beautiful wife Kate Wilson. Roll on next year! As many of you will know, I’m never one to rest of my laurels, and we’re already started planning next year’s camps. The goal now is not one, but two, so keep your eyes peeled for information on both a Winter and a Summer Music Missions Blessings, Camp in 2015. Jonny Wilson Calling all bands! If you would like to perform in Term 3’s Café Concert (Sunday 21st September, at The Petone Beach Café) just email Bruno Shirley by 1pm on Saturday 13th September. See you all there! It’s been a busy couple of months for Goodtime onstage with three highenergy and high-calibre concerts to showcase out students’ talents. We kicked off with a chilled-out Café Concert in the lounge-café of Zeal, our Wellington Site. Although the sadly coffee wasn’t flowing, the music was and we were treated to fifteen fantastic performances, all introduced by the beautiful Scots-Kiwi double act of Ali and Chloe. The space was packed and with the sun streaming in the windows, a most enjoyable afternoon was had by all! Hot on the heels of the Café Concert was our Term 2 Where The Loud Things Are concert at Secret Level in Lower Hutt. Another packed out evening, the audience were wowed with nineteen acts that blew the speakers to the rafters. The Loud Things concerts are particularly designed to showcase our large number of drummers and our band programme. Highlights from the kit included “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" performed by Koan Yule and a World Rhythm Medley performed by Nikita Piper. Millennium, one of our Senior Bands were also particularly awesome with their version of “Get My Mes- sage”. Wrapping up the concert was the international Music Missions Band, who Thanks also to those who sent in their brought the house down with their fan- photos - if you ever take any photos of a tastic set. Goodtime event feel free to share them with us on our Facebook page! Our third outing came after the winter holidays, on The Hits FM stage at the Petone Carnival. Although less than an hour in total, we presented thirteen topquality acts. Braving the cold, the wind and a piano that just wouldn’t behave, all the performers were absolute professionals and took the troubles in their stride. August 2014 Page 3 Music on the Move Rad Rhythm Goodtime is delighted to announce Music Bus based lessons will soon be available at our Petone and Silverstream Sites and also at the Wainuiomata Community Centre. From late August lessons on guitar, ukulele, drums and keyboard will be taught on a bus near you, as will our innovative five week Introduction to Music (ITM) course. This ITM programme enables both students and parents to make more knowledgeable instrument choices for long term lessons. For the last two and a half years we’ve been working on a project that will revolutionise the way music is taught in primary schools - Rad Rhythm. This week the programme went live and we’ve already had a fantastic response. their Music Bus classes. Goodtime is grateful to both the schools and the parents for the opportunity to conduct these trials and for the flexibility shown towards this initiative. It is hoped that the benefits of this trial show that rotating lesson times can be adopted across It is also really exciting that the home most schools as it prevents children schooled children from WHEN will be the missing out on their academic subjects. first children to be taught on the bus at the Petone site next week – welcome to The special Music Bus mentions this the Introduction to Music programme. term goes to Khandallah and Silverstream schools for their administration A couple of schools are currently trialing support and the great attitude from evea rotating timetable so that their chil- ryone with whom we have contact. Rad Rhythm is an interactive video series that teaches children all about music, performance and theory. Professionally filmed at Avalon Studios, and edited by our very own Caleb Riordan, it looks and sounds outstanding. If you think this should be at your child’s primary school, then let your principal know about the programme. You (and they!) can check out the website and promo videos here at radrhythm.com. Pupil of the Month Moving On Up Choosing a pupil of the month is always tricky, especially so as the Academy grows! However, one pupil has made a particular impression over the last few months and it is our pleasure to name Bella Stonnell as this newsletter’s Pupil of the Month. Although we now teach in three sites, on three buses and at seventeen schools, the ancestral home of Goodtime Music Academy will always be Silverstream Retreat. It’s where everything started - with Jonny teaching drums out of a small, damp room in the old hospital ward (very humble beginnings!). Bella started lessons with Goodtime just over two years ago and has grown and grown in both confidence and skill. A multi -talented young musician Bella sings, plays both drums and guitar and fronts one of our Silverstream Bands. A regular performer at our concerts, Bella blew us all away with her smooth, stylistic rendition of Fly Me To The Moon in the Term 2 Café Concert, which she later repeated on The Hits stage at the Petone Carnival, backed by our house band of tutors. Bella Stonnell backed by her brother Jack at the Term 2 Loud Things concert Excitable and bubbly off stage, Bella displays a wonderfully understated confidence onstage, drawing everyone in with her beautiful voice. Without doubt, one to watch! Over time our teaching at the Retreat has grown and last year we were lucky enough to be given access to one of the main buildings - affectionately called ‘The Homestead’. We were still spread out across the site though, with no real focus. This year however, we’ve been working hard at making the Homestead a true home for Goodtime and are very proud to announce that soon all our lessons will be being taught from there, with what we hope will be a vibrant (and warm) foyer and office area and six spacious teaching rooms. So, next time your waiting for your lesson, don’t hang out in your car in the cold, come join us and relax in front of the fire! The Goodtime Times Page 4 Upcoming Events Workshop Concert with ‘Mooga Fooga’ Mooga Fooga is an outstanding funkfusion band formed by Rory McCartney and Nick Maybe who met at the New Zealand School of Music over 10 years ago.
