Greetings from the desk of the
Principal!
I’ve been warmly welcomed to King
George VI and am so pleased with our
transition back to school – we missed
our students and staff over the summer
and it feels wonderful to be back in the
swing of things at school!
Please find attached to this newsletter
a copy of our first School Council
Meeting Agenda. Please contact Mrs.
McAughey personally at the school if you
are interested in holding a School
Council position this year. Please don’t
let this process of elections deter you
from joining us this week for our School
Council meeting. We are a casual group
and welcome all helpers. See you
Thursday evening!
Playground PALS
PALS – our Peer Activity Leaders have
had a great start to the year under the
direction of Ms. Gayleen Bell. Student
Leaders have been trained in leading
playground activities and games - this
has been a wonderful way to promote
positive playground behavior – we are
all happier when we are busy!
Our PALS team will meet every Day 5 at
nutrition break in the library to plan the
week’s games – please encourage your
child in Grade 4 – 6 to join the team or
ask our younger students to make sure
they find a PALS leader on the
playground to join in with classmates in
a new game! This is especially

Welcome Back to School Activities
Last week Thursday, our KG staff and
students participated in a fun-day
where each classroom teacher planned
a game for students. We played Dripdrip-drop, parachute games, four
square, Fris Knock, skipping, tag and
other traditional playground games.
The weather cooperated, the fruit
popsicles were yummy and our “New to
King George” students played alongside
their school mates. Our goal was to join

Special thanks to our teachers and
students for planning the games and to
Ms. Farrell for the Popsicle treats!
Teaching and Learning News
Our school start-up has been busy this
year; classroom teachers are involved in
testing and checking in on our students,
gathering our initial starting-points data
for reading skills and comprehension.

year, reinforce positive games, and

daily basis. Thanks for helping out with
reading practice at home. Read every
day with your child. For older students,
encourage them to read each evening
before bed.
On Friday of last week, all of our
primary teachers were involved in a
Guided Reading training day where we
reinforced and learned about strategies
for effective reading instruction in
Kindergarten through to Grade 3.
When you are reading with your child at
home on a daily basis – here are some
tips to help when stuck on a word: Look
for Chunks, Get Your Mouth Ready,
Check the Picture, Does the word look
like another word you know? Try Again!
These are the same strategies we use in
the classroom at the reading table on a
Recreation Program
Start-Up
Our forms for recreation program signup for students in Grades 5 & 6 will be
coming home closer to the end of the
month. Our first event is a make-up
event – a golf game that was missed last
year! As soon as the ice is in, our Junior
Broncos hockey program will start up as
well. Stay tuned for more information.
A SUPERVISION REMINDER: Please note that supervision begins on the playground at 8:25 a.m. Breakfast program
opens indoors at 8:25 a.m. Supervision ends on the playground at 3:30 p.m. After this time there is only supervision
for bus students in the designated bus areas. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN UNATTENDED OUTSIDE OF
SUPERVISION TIMES.

King George School VI – School Council Agenda
September 12, 2013, 6:30 p.m. King George Library
1. Introductions – there’s much that is new at King George VI this year! We are hopeful to have some
new parents, guardians, friends and families of our students join us on School Council this year.
Some of our veteran School Council members are moving on and we welcome those of you who are
“New to KG” and also others who have been considering and wondering what School Council is all
about. It’s a wonderful way to be engaged in our school community and to keep informed about
our students and King George events.
2. Approval of Minutes – from last meeting
3. Treasurer’s Report – Craig Debbo
4. Elections – please know that our School Council meetings are casual events and in most cases, an

the year formality” steer you away from joining us!
