I’ve been warmly welcomed to King George VI and am so pleased with our transition back to school – we missed our students and staff over the summer and it feels wonderful to be back in the swing of things at school! Please find attached to this newsletter a copy of our first School Council Meeting Agenda. Please contact Mrs. McAughey personally at the school if you are interested in holding a School Council position this year. Please don’t let this process of elections deter you from joining us this week for our School Council meeting. We are a casual group and welcome all helpers. See you Thursday evening! Playground PALS PALS – our Peer Activity Leaders have had a great start to the year under the direction of Ms. Gayleen Bell. Student Leaders have been trained in leading playground activities and games - this has been a wonderful way to promote positive playground behavior – we are all happier when we are busy! Our PALS team will meet every Day 5 at nutrition break in the library to plan the week’s games – please encourage your child in Grade 4 – 6 to join the team or ask our younger students to make sure they find a PALS leader on the playground to join in with classmates in a new game! This is especially PD Day Nov 4th – Hot Lunch Pasta orders ca EQAO Data King George Parents, Guardians, Family Members and Friends are Hot Lunch invited to our OPEN HOUSE, this Tuesday, September 10th, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Classroom teachers will meet with families in classrooms. Please have our King George VI students tour you around the school. We have a small Scavenger Hunt planned to check out a few areas in the school and to keep your family engaged. Please keep your children with you during the OPEN HOUSE so that everyone is accounted for. Welcome Back to School Activities Last week Thursday, our KG staff and students participated in a fun-day where each classroom teacher planned a game for students. We played Dripdrip-drop, parachute games, four square, Fris Knock, skipping, tag and other traditional playground games. The weather cooperated, the fruit popsicles were yummy and our “New to King George” students played alongside their school mates. Our goal was to join Drip drip drop! is poetry in the prose of life.” Sigmund Freud (1856-1639) Special thanks to our teachers and students for planning the games and to Ms. Farrell for the Popsicle treats! Teaching and Learning News Our school start-up has been busy this year; classroom teachers are involved in testing and checking in on our students, gathering our initial starting-points data for reading skills and comprehension. “When we share – that together as a school community, welcome our students to the school year, reinforce positive games, and meet new friends. I learned many new names and faces; I’m sure our students did as well! daily basis. Thanks for helping out with reading practice at home. Read every day with your child. For older students, encourage them to read each evening before bed. On Friday of last week, all of our primary teachers were involved in a Guided Reading training day where we reinforced and learned about strategies for effective reading instruction in Kindergarten through to Grade 3. When you are reading with your child at home on a daily basis – here are some tips to help when stuck on a word: Look for Chunks, Get Your Mouth Ready, Check the Picture, Does the word look like another word you know? Try Again! These are the same strategies we use in the classroom at the reading table on a Recreation Program Start-Up Our forms for recreation program signup for students in Grades 5 & 6 will be coming home closer to the end of the month. Our first event is a make-up event – a golf game that was missed last year! As soon as the ice is in, our Junior Broncos hockey program will start up as well. Stay tuned for more information. A SUPERVISION REMINDER: Please note that supervision begins on the playground at 8:25 a.m. Breakfast program opens indoors at 8:25 a.m. Supervision ends on the playground at 3:30 p.m. After this time there is only supervision for bus students in the designated bus areas. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CHILDREN UNATTENDED OUTSIDE OF SUPERVISION TIMES. Introductions – there’s much that is new at King George VI this year! We are hopeful to have some new parents, guardians, friends and families of our students join us on School Council this year. Some of our veteran School Council members are moving on and we welcome those of you who are “New to KG” and also others who have been considering and wondering what School Council is all about. It’s a wonderful way to be engaged in our school community and to keep informed about our students and King George events. 2. Approval of Minutes – from last meeting 3. Treasurer’s Report – Craig Debbo 4. Elections – please know that our School Council meetings are casual events and in most cases, an election is not necessary. We welcome volunteers and helpers - those that wish to be fully involved and those that can only help out on special occasions…please don’t let this “beginning of the year formality” steer you away from joining us!
