When she died at age 99, our beloved Sister Jeanne Marie Zeugin

I am not afraid of tomorrow
For I have seen yesterday
And I love today.

When she died at age 99, our beloved Sister Jeanne Marie
Zeugin was the oldest member of the SCLs. She completed her
journey home to God’s full embrace on Friday, November 7, 2014,
in her room at Ross Hall, surrounded by the love of her community
and family, having served the people of God as an SCL for 81 years.
Jeanne Marie was born in Leavenworth on March 15, 1915, the
fourth child born to Joseph Anthony and Gertrude Hartnett Zeugin.
Jeanne Marie had three brothers and four sisters. She was very proud of both her Irish and
Swiss ancestry. Her maternal (Irish) and paternal (Swiss) grandparents were immigrants
who settled in Kansas. The family lived in town, and Jeanne Marie graduated from Sacred
Heart Grade School and Immaculata High School. She entered the religious community of
the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on September 8, 1933 and as Sister Margaret Gertrude, made her profession vows on June 18, 1935, later returning to the use of her
baptismal name.
Ellen Hustings, S. Jeanne Marie’s niece, submitted the following for the Kansas City
Star’s article “90 Years Young” by Dugan Arnett. It was published on August 7, 2012, in
the FYI section. At the time, “Aunt Jeanne” was 97 years old.
Her mind is sharp as a tack, and she is the only member of our family
who can keep all of her 26 nieces and nephews, 69 grand nieces and
nephews, and 65+ great nieces and nephews straight. She also plays a mean
card game. Ellen added that her aunt’s last big adventure was serving
as the grand marshal of the 2010 Leavenworth St. Patrick’s Day parade.
Sister Marianna Bauder, SCL, another niece, shared that two people are named after
her aunt: Jeanne Marie Duffin Hund, niece; and Jeanne Marie Seerey, daughter of friend
Dolores Seerey from Midland, Texas. Sister Jeanne Marie had two godchildren: grand
nephew Alex Liebeno, a Marine stationed in the Pacific Ocean and grand niece Kerry
Hustings, a student in Edinburgh, Scotland. Aunt Jeanne was a great communicator who
sent 100 Christmas cards every year to friends and people she met along the way.
Sister Jeanne Marie was preceded in death in the SCL community by her niece, S.
Helen Bristow, and cousins S. Mary Ellenita Uhlrich and S. Eulalia Uhlrich. Survivors include sisters Helen Bristow (Mrs. Joseph) and Margaret Liebeno (Mrs. Allen); sister-in-law
Lillian Zeugin (Mrs. Richard); her niece Sister Marianna Bauder, SCL; a LARGE number
of extended family members; friends, and her SCL Community.
