Knee Immobilizer Your doctor has prescribed the use of a knee immobilizer (brace) for you. It will help keep your knee from bending and help straighten your knee. Your physical therapist will adjust it for you. Applying the Immobilizer Follow these steps: 1. While lying down or sitting with your leg straight out, wrap the foam shell around your operated leg. The metal stays should run along the back of your leg. Line up the rounded cut-out areas with your kneecap. The brace should not go past the ankle bone. The ankle bone should stay outside of the brace. Do not remove the metal stays. 2. Wrap and secure the straps – not too tight but not too loose that it slips. When to Wear Wear the immobilizer as instructed by your doctor or your physical therapist. If, after wearing the immobilizer for a while, your leg becomes numb, tingly or discolored: 1. Loosen the straps. 2. Remove the immobilizer and call your doctor or therapist if these symptoms do not go away. Cleaning Hand wash the foam shell in warm water using a mild soap. Rinse it well so that all of the soap is removed. Any soap left on may irritate your skin. Let it air dry. Call your outpatient physical therapist or doctor with any questions or concerns.
