NOSCAPINE was once considered a narcotic
and was initially known as narcotine because of
its derivation from the opium poppy. However, in
1957, after evidence accumulated that it was
neither chemically nor pharmacologically related
to the opiate alkaloids, it became known officially as
noscapine. Noscapine is not a controlled substance.
Noscapine is used primarily as an antitussive.
Doses of 5 to 15 milligrams are as effective as
30 milligrams of codeine. It is used for temporary
relief of cough or conditions such as bronchial
asthma, allergies, colds or bronchitis.
The major markets for noscapine-based cough
medications are Japan and Europe. The
hydrochloride salt is often formulated into tablets.
