Uniform/Dress Code

Uniform Policy – Class 2019

Student appearance is a reflection of the individual, the university and the profession.
A professional, modest, and neat appearance must be maintained at all times in the
clinical setting. Special attention should be given to keeping uniforms clean, neat and
in good repair.

Faculty has the right to send inappropriately attired students home with a failing
grade for the clinical experience that day.

The student uniform is a specific combination of NNU school colors (red & black):
o Black scrub pants of any style and brand name are acceptable within the rules
of modesty as defined by faculty or agency leaders
o Students may select from two styles of pull-over-the-head scrub tops:
 Cherokee style 4800 (black with red contrast)
 Any solid black, vee-neck scrub top which is modest
 All scrub tops will be embroidered with the designated school
information. (Contact Department of Nursing – Administrator for
specific embroidery requirements)
o Students may wear a black tee-shirt underneath the uniform.
o Students may wear a black scrub jacket (with the designated school
information) for warmth.
o Black leather shoes & socks/hose are required. (No tennis shoes are allowed).

Each student is required to wear a picture identification name tag in the form
specified by the Department of Nursing. (These will be purchased from the NNU
Technology Media Resources the first week of school during the sophomore
year). The identification must be attached to the uniform above the waist and
visible at all times in all clinical settings. Agencies may also require an agencyspecific badge as well. Students without nametags and badges will be sent home
from clinical and receive a failing grade for that day without the chance for
clinical makeup.

A personal stethoscope, a water-resistant watch with a method for counting
seconds, and pen are part of the required uniform. Students may be sent home
from clinical without chance for clinical makeup if they do not bring these items
to clinical.

No acrylic nails are allowed; however, short well-manicured nails are essential.
Hair must be clean, neat and well contained with no applied colors, beads,
feathers, or glitter. Beards and mustaches must be short and evenly trimmed so as
to fit under a standard surgical mask. Makeup should be minimal. No fragrances
should be worn in the clinical area for the comfort & safety of the client.

No jewelry other than a wedding band is to be worn in clinical. Only small posts
(one in each ear) may be worn in pierced ears with no earrings hanging below the
ears. No other visible adornments requiring body piercing will be permitted in the
clinical areas. Visible tattoos must be covered.

Students must refrain from chewing gum while in the clinical setting.

Some clinical sites will have different clothing and dress codes. Additional
agency guidelines must be followed. Agency dress codes will be communicated
to students by faculty ahead of clinical rotation.

The Department of Nursing will provide the student with a penlight, scissors, and
a book bag to bring to clinical each day. No other purse or bag should be brought
to the clinical setting.
