Our mission is to welcome, accept and encourage
all people as we follow Jesus.

Just Pondering…
March 8th {from Genesis 1-3} Adam, Eve and the Serpent
On March 1st , we step into Lent with our 7 pm Ash Wednesday Worship
Service.
March 15th {from the book of Job} Job and one of his ‘friends’
Lent is the journey to the cross with Jesus, followed by the joyful
celebration of the Easter morning empty tomb. Because it is Jesus’
journey toward betrayal, denial, forsakenness and death, it is a season
that the church encourages the community to be more introspective and
more intentional in faith practices. What might that mean for you this
year? For your family?
March 22nd {from the book of Ruth} Ruth and her mother-in-law, Naomi
March 29th {from Genesis 37-48} brothers, Joseph and Reuben
April 5th {from Genesis 12-18; 21-22} father and son, Abraham and Isaac
How about 40 days of…
I pray that you enter in and that your Lenten Journey is blessed with
spiritual ‘ahas’ as well as the peace that passes all understanding.
Sharing. Consider the blessing of sharing your life and/or your stories. As
you look around, who has God placed on your path for this opportunity?
Or perhaps you will be given the chance to listen to a story!
Pastor Leah
Living. Are there ways that God might be calling you to better steward
this precious gift of life?
Giving. How might you make this a season of generosity? Where could you
give your time, talent or treasure as an act of faithfulness?
Being. As in being present. As in noticing. What Word does God have for
you? How/where is God showing up in your world? Are you watching?
Participating. In prayer. In biblical study. In your faith community. What if
you committed to be in worship each Sunday throughout Lent? How about
Wednesdays, with dinner included?
Wednesdays this Lent will begin with Soup Supper at 6:15 pm. At 7:00
pm we will gather for Evening Vespers. Also, on Wednesdays during Lent,
we will be ‘meeting’ some very interesting Old Testament characters. If you
got the chance, what would you ask Job? Ever wonder if Isaac and
Abraham’s relationship ever recovered from that near-sacrifice? What are
you curious about Ruth or Joseph or Adam? Or even the Serpent for that
matter?
This will be your opportunity to enter into the conversation, thinking about
the people, who they were, what they may have been thinking and what
sort of understanding of God guided their paths. Mark these dates on
your calendar:

9...8...7...6...5...4... Muck-Out Countdown!
When we entered into our muck-out-attack, the vision was to address the church
top-to-bottom, peeking into closets, corners and classrooms everywhere, removing
what was no longer used and creating space for ministries present and next.
Much has been accomplished; additionally, here are many, many spaces that are
'nearly' complete. With the goal of 'end of winter' our March 19th date is quickly
approaching.
Don't stop. Don't give up. Let's finish up.
What a blessing it is, when spring-cleaning is
complete! ...3...2...1...

ON THE ROAD...
WITH Patty MacInnes (DoVM) and Lissie (Dog)...
It was over 30 years ago that I took Stephen Ministry training. I was very shy and saw
"Assertiveness Training" as a way to be a more effective teacher. Much to my dismay,
I had to take the entire course to get the part that I wanted. BUT- I am so glad that I
did.
Stephen Ministry is not small bits of one skill and bits of another. The training focuses
on the whole person: caregiver and care receiver. Topics include:
'Feelings:
Yours, Mine, and Ours', 'The Art of Listening', dealing with grief, depression, crisis, and
of course confidentially.
I am refreshing my skills with the current Stephen Ministry group meeting on alternating
Saturdays from 8:30 to 3:30.
Caring ministry is a blessing for all involved. The training for this ministry is
straightforward and opens our hearts to the needs of suffering people. This newest
group in training is a unique combination of gifts, personality, and character.
Please pray for our training that we will learn the skills needed to become dedicated and
consecrated caregivers.

Well, my mom turns 92 this month and she's doing pretty well,
considering. She has been having circulation issues with her legs, but
she is still able to walk around (with a cane). She's still alert and
funny and wise, so I am grateful. She was a preschool teacher, choir
member (soprano)/director, youth leader, Sunday School teacher, and more. A
soft-spoken dynamo in a tiny Japanese body. Our house was like a second home
for many of the youth and young adults. Mom and dad opened their hearts (and
home) to everyone. Mom loved to cook as much as she loved to sing, so there were
always reasons to play music and eat!! With Sunday School, Worship service,
choir, Bible study group, youth activities - It seemed like we lived and breathed
church week after week.
I love that I am now living and breathing church again. I am doing so many
things that cause me to reflect back on mom and dad, and the things they did that
mirrored the face of God. Sure, mom was a preschool teacher and dad was a civil
service accountant - yet, as far as I'm concerned, the work I am doing now means
I am, in fact, carrying on the "family business." Happy birthday, mom!
Aloha ke Akua! God is Love! -Keith

The Odd Man Challenge
"You all know that I am an odd

with me? For the next month or
next year let's make our offerings
odd; instead of offering $20 let's
do $21. Instead of $50 let's do $51
or $55. You get the idea. You too
can then officially say you are odd.
Small numbers add up."

Reformation Quotes:
“The Protestant Reformation had a lot to do
with the printing press, where Martin
Luther’s theses were reproduced about
250,000 times, and so you had widespread
dissemination of ideas that hadn’t circulated
in the mainstream before.”
-Nate Silver, author and statistician
“The now almost universally acknowledged principles of religious
freedom, liberty of conscience, the rule or law, separation of powers
and constitutionally limited republics were unthinkable before the
Reformation.”

Welcoming the Stranger
Sunday School, February 2017
The Sunday School offerings for January and February go to SACA. The
children will be doing work for/with SACA during the Service Day on
Feb 26.
Thanks to all the volunteers who have made our Sunday School a fun
place to learn about Jonah. The workshop leaders during this rotation
were Jen Capener, Jesse and Leah Rue, Norma Pritchard, Jim and Jill
Brueckner, Elaine Wilson, and Katie and Andrew Sprauer.
Genuine, heart felt thanks to you for the opportunity that you give us to
feed our alternative ed classroom in the high school. For Thanksgiving
we were able to be part of a pair of siblings able to have a holiday turkey
dinner together. For Valentines, we were told by the Vice Principal that
"We could not have shown up at a better time, so many kids were
hurting and that was just what the school needed." We fed lasagna to
60 folk that day. This glorious opportunity could not happen without you.
We are grateful for your forever providing healthy snacks, personal
goods, school supplies and cash to help us to care for them.
Sue and your ARK team.
ARK Help Needed
Hungry high school kids count on nutritious snacks that you
provide. Ideas include cheese, power bars that have protein,
jerky and nuts.
Thanks for being there for us!

Jen's class made a mural of sea creatures and talked about God giving
Jonah time to think about his choices and decisions while he was safe
inside a large fish. God is always with us even when we are sad, lonely,
or needing some time to think. Children talked about where and when
they think/pray. The mural hangs in the art room for all to see. In Katie
and Andrew's cooking class the students made cookies with a surprise
ingredient of potato chips, and the younger students made cupcakes
with a special surprise to remind them of God's surprising ways. In Jim
and Jill's science class they learned about the digestive system. Pliers
were the teeth, spray bottles represented saliva and the acid in the
stomach as this was related to Jonah inside the big fish.
Our next rotation will explore the story of the four friends who go to
the extremes to make sure their friend can see Jesus and be healed
(Luke 5:17-26). Our classes will focus on ways in which we can serve
others before ourselves.
If you are interested in more information about the program or
becoming a volunteer, please contact Marsa at [email protected]

Pies for a Cause
We know you love pies! April 8 you will have the
opportunity to buy a pie (or 2 or 3) and support Tiffany
& Larry Enderle's family. Because of medical issues
their family is struggling financially. We are so
thankful to belong to a very caring, generous
community at Immanuel. Please be thinking about your support.
A little blurb about our life: by Tiffany Enderle
I always knew there was something special about Sadie but could never figure it out.
Doctor appointment after doctor appointment, she was finally diagnosed at 7 with
Epilepsy. She has petite mal seizures which are very small, mostly eye fluttering, but
sometimes had over 400 in an hour. It caused her to be diagnosed as intellectually
disabled. As the year went on and we were getting her treatment we started to notice
what we thought was Spencer copying his sister, but soon realized he was doing it when
she was not around. As he turned 7 years old he too was diagnosed with Epilepsy.
Spencer's started with the little ones but quickly changed into extremely violent,
convulsive ones.
Fast forward 7 years we have Sadie's Epilepsy under control, but Spencer's is not at all.
He is declining rapidly. We have tried 2nd/3rd opinions in and out of state, every
generalized medication, Keto diet, VNS implant, medical Marijuana, and most recently
brain surgery with still no control. There is no genetic Epilepsy on either side of family,
no known reason for it and there is no cure - only control - for Epilepsy. Spencer has
had thousands of horrific seizures. Due to the unknown he is in a wheelchair outside of
home, has days where he can't remember how to hold a fork or put his clothes on and
has to wear diapers at night.
To keep the perfect set up for him, we have a ranch style house, no stairs, his own room
with a suction machine, oxygen concentrator (he wears oxygen at night), mattress on
the floor with his seizure pad that sets off an alarm when he has one at night. Average
nights he has 4 and I am up with him every time.
