It is truly an honor for me to introduce two of the nicest people I know. Their personal story is like a fairy tale. They met and fell in love as teenagers when they lived near each other in Brooklyn and eventually became engaged in 1943. Henry entered the army and served in Europe with General Patton’s Third Army during WW II. Florence was and still is the beautiful girl from around the corner and Henry was and still is the boy smitten with Florence. After Henry’s army service they married and eventually moved to beautiful downtown Oceanside. Of course at that time it was just being built up. There was no reform congregation. Florence and Henry along with a handful of visionaries sought to create one in Oceanside. They used various places to gather and worship, including a firehouse and the Lutheran Church. Eventually they located a piece of property with a mansion and carriage house on it. Along with about 20 others Florence and Henry personally guaranteed a mortgage they obtained to buy the property and create Temple Avodah. They not only placed their finances in support of Temple Avodah, they physically painted and fixed up the property. In 1959 it took guts (or if you prefer chutzpah) to take such a chance that a newly formed reform congregation could survive. As more people moved into Oceanside, Florence and Henry went door to door to encourage the Jewish families to join as members of Temple Avodah. It is because of them and a handful of other pioneers who we now call “founders” of Temple Avodah we have obtained the benefit of not only this land and building, but the comradeship of fellow reform Jews. It really isn’t about a building, it is about a dream. We are able to assemble in prayer and socialize because of the incredible foresight of these people. Their vision of something great and wonderful should inspire all of us. Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful concerned citizens can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” There can be no doubt that Florence and Henry Austin epitomize thoughtful and concerned citizens and have changed our world. I can’t think of a time when Florence and Henry did not have a smile on their face. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude. Harry S. Truman said “Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” Florence and Henry seized the moment and created a great change in our society by creating a new Jewish home – Temple Avodah. John Quincy Adams said – “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Florence and Henry dreamed more, learned more, and certainly became more. They are true leaders. They lead in a quiet and unassuming manner. When Phil and Vivian Perlmutter hosted one of the first home meetings to discuss who would be willing to contribute to the capital campaign so we could renovate our aging building it was de je vue all over again. Henry jumped up and was the first to say “I’m in”. No hesitation. These are rare and remarkable people. We are all inspired by their leadership and cherish and admire the example they set. I cherish their friendship. Please join me in honoring - Florence and Henry Austin, our super stars. Yes, this holiday means more than just good sales! We celebrate the birthdays of our presidents. In other words, we are thankful that our presidents, past and present, were born and were ready to serve and improve our country. Yes, we all know how divisive this election has been. I strongly feel and believe that we – yes, all of us - need during this Presidents’ Day to reaffirm the values that our Founding Fathers wanted as the basis of our democratic society. In other words, we need to always respect the Office of the President and believe that, no matter who is President of the United States, he or she will do the very best to bring to our country and to the world a sense of peace and prosperity. It is my hope and prayer that the division that we experienced prior to the election is now in the past and that this Presidents’ Day we celebrate the fact that we live in a country where the Office of the President is much, much more than the person. This Presidents’ Day let’s recognize not one president or another, but let’s become aware of the power and meaning of the Office of the President of the United States. It is much bigger and more important than any one person. Therefore, it doesn’t matter now if your candidate won or lost the presidential election; what matters now is that the Office of the President becomes a symbol of unity and strength in our country. Let this Presidents’ Day be a reaffirmation of what impressed my wife and me when we had just moved to the United States to start my Rabbinical studies. We turned on the TV and we heard someone criticizing President Reagan, not in a friendly way with respect, but with strong words. This is what Presidents’ Day is all about. I don’t mean to speak against or in favor of President Trump. It means that we can be involved in our government and what it does, in favor or against, but Presidents’ Day is a segue from the election, confirming our right to be part of the Office of the President in any way we can. I hope, I wish and dream that Presidents’ Day will be the beginning of a feeling of unity in our country. Happy Presidents’ Day! We are a democratic society and the Office of the President belongs to us all! Rabbi Uri Goren Shabbat services are held by the Torah Study Group on the last Shabbat of every month from 10:30-11:15 a.m. They are open to all members. Contact office if you need more information. Page 2 President’s Message Alexander Hamilton v Aaron Burr, Who Do You Side With? Recently I surprised my wife with a birthday present of tickets to Hamilton. Before I get started: yes, it is an excellent show; no, all of the songs are not rap and even the rap songs are easily understandable; and no, we did not mind that persons known to be white are played by non-white performers. Also, sorry, I cannot get anyone tickets. The show contains 34 songs and is about the life of Alexander Hamilton and his relationships with several people, particularly Aaron Burr. In addition to the 34 songs, there is the continuing reprise of the songs “My Shot” and “The Room Where it Happens,” as these songs are part of the show’s underlying themes of Hamilton using his intellect, writing ability and bravery to be a leader and fulfill his burning desire to be involved; while Burr is initially content to play it safe and not support any cause, but Burr eventually becomes jealous of Hamilton, envies that Hamilton had risen to a position of importance and wants to be in the room where the decisions are made. The songs “Alexander Hamilton,” “My Shot” and “Non-Stop” deliver an insight into a man who is uncertain how much time he will have, his intensity to do all that he can in that limited time, and his tireless work ethic to achieve his goals. Burr delivers statements, “Never do today what you can do tomorrow. Something may occur to make you regret your premature action;” “Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. Delay may give clearer light as to what is best to be done;” and “The rule of my life is to make business a pleasure, and pleasure my business.” The question is who are you? Are you Hamilton, driven to achieve, afraid if you don’t do it now, you may never get a chance to do it? Do you have the desire that you must be involved? Is it your goal to be in the room where the power lies and the deci- Religious School News On my desk is a new book published by Behrman House called The Joys & Oys of Parenting. Written by Dr. Maurice Elias, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, Dr. Marilyn Gootman, an educator, author and parenting expert and Heather Schwartz, a writer and parent of young children, this book pulls its inspiration from Jewish tradition to help parents create a nurturing and fulfilling home for their children. The first chapter is called: A Peaceful Home. Thinking back to when all my children lived at home, peaceful is not the word that springs to mind. We were busy, running in many directions and often in too much of a hurry. Reading over the suggestions in this chapter made me feel good about much that went on in our home (yeah- we did that!) and also sorry that I hadn’t known about some of the ideas before. While I haven’t finished the book yet, I am impressed by the wisdom in it and in our Jewish values and customs. By the time this article reaches you I should be finished reading the book and am happy to lend it out or order it for any parent who would like to read it. February is the month that brings us Tu B’Shevat, the Birthday of the Trees, on February 11th. As a child, I looked forward to the little baggie of fruit we would get in school and was jealous of the children in Israel who were getting to enjoy warmer Page 3 weather and see the almond trees bloom. Here in our school we will celebrate Tu B’Shevat Monday and Tuesday, February 13th & 14th, enjoying some of the fruits of Israel, singing songs and discussing the things we can do to protect and nurture our natural resources. This month we are also busy learning Torah stories and about the Torah in general. Our visit from the sofer has inspired us. Students in each grade are making up questions about what they have studied. These questions will be used in a Torah Bowl which will be held near the end of the school year. Stay tuned for more details. Our Kesher Kef students have created beautiful “paint-a prayer” paintings to hang on their walls, participated in yoga and heard about summer camp opportunities in the Reform movement. We will also learn about the wonderful activities that the JNF sponsors in Israel as well as hear how to respond to some of the anti-Israel/antiSemitic sentiments expressed today. Preparing our young adults to be proud of their heritage is an important part of a positive Jewish identity. . Marilyn Greenspan, Director of Education [email protected] p: (516) 766-6809 f: (516) 766-5092 sions are made? Or are you Aaron Burr? Are you someone who doesn’t want to get involved? Do you prefer to not take a side? Are you someone who does not want to lead and would rather have someone else make the decisions? For me, while there are times I wish that I wasn’t so involved and I had more opportunities to have pleasure be my business, in the end it is my personality to get involved. I just can’t help myself, I want to be in the know and share my point of view. I like being in the rooms where things happen. Maybe that is not you; it is not for everyone. Burr was very smart and successful. Whether you emulate Hamilton or Burr, you can be successful. However, if you choose Burr, don’t be jealous that you don’t know and don’t be mad at the decisions that are made. Also, don’t challenge anyone to a duel. Scot Mackoff Cantorial Notes At our Shabbat services before Sukkot, Rabbi Goren and Peppy announced that they would be sponsoring a Junior Choir dinner in an attempt to support our students and Temple. What a wonderful idea! You too can sponsor a Junior Choir dinner and/ or party. A donation of $30 brings in pizza for our students and an additional $15 gives them an ice cream sundae party. The kids are incredibly enthusiastic about leading services throughout the year. Why not encourage that enthusiasm with a donation? These children are the future of Temple Avodah and by showing them support you are validating their importance in our community while also helping Temple. If you are interested in sponsoring please contact [email protected] or mgr@ avodah.org. I’d like to thank the families and individuals who have sponsored already! Also, make sure to check out our new first Friday services. Upbeat music, instruments, and song sheets help people of all ages get in the Shabbat mood. Shalom! So this is what you call Crewel Embroidery. We had started last year to explain some of what you see in the lobbies and corridors of our Temple. If you walk through the doors separating the sanctuary lobby from the corridor leading to the Temple office you will see a large wall hanging attractively decorated with crewel embroidery. This was originally designed to be placed on the rear wall of our ark. It was presented by Sisterhood to commemorate the 25th anniversary of our Temple in 1976-77. It remained there for twenty years until the Temple renovation. It was designed by Sisterhood member Barbara Groger. The work must have been labor intensive, because thirty five members of Sisterhood are listed as having worked on the embroidery. The plaque also describes some of religious symbols depicted. In the October issue of Temple topics we described how we acquired the title of Sholem Aleichem Scholar(SAS).
