So popular was the art competition that it’s likely to be repeated annually. Swimming Success The combined results from the Russley Swimming Sports and the North West Zone swimming sports have pushed Bentley house well ahead on points at this early stage of the year. Congratulations to all students on your participation and effort. Principal’s Message Kia ora, talofa lava, hello Strategic Vision As we develop new strategic goals for Russley, we have created a graphic to represent the school’s aspirations. Back in Week 4’s newsletter, I set out the thinking behind the goals and what they mean for Russley School. We want to promote these goals in our school charter and use them to direct the actions we take as a school — including students, staff and the parent community. I welcome your ideas on the goals and the graphic, email [email protected] My thanks to Sarah Wakefield’s husband Harman for his work on the graphic design. Congratulations Nine Russley swimmers will represent the North West Zone at the Central Zone swimming championships to be held at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre on April 9th. Thank you to all Russley swimmers who gave of their best at the Zones sports last week. The Zones competition is always a ‘step up’ and it was pleasing to see the fantastic way everyone competed. Open morning On the morning of Wednesday 5th April, our school will be open to parents and visitors who would like to experience the workings of our school on a normal school day. You might be interested in a different age level from your own child or you may be interested in our Year 7/8s or how our collaborative Room 7 & 8 works. Student leaders will be available to accompany parents around the school and there will be maps available to assist you. Acting Deputy Principal Pam Stretch and myself will deliver a brief introduction to parents in the Old Hall at 9.00am and again at 10:30am. If parents can manage it, we’d love to see a good number of you attend. PTA support for school projects This year, funds raised by the PTA will be used for some smaller-scale projects around the school instead of being saved for big budget items such as school furniture. The school has proposed four or five projects that will immediately better our environment and benefit our students. The first project is a subsidy of the Mathletics programme for Years 3-8. The PTA has contributed $10 per student, making this programme as accessible as possible while enabling the school to channel school resources to other learning programmes. The second project is to fund playground signage that highlights the Russley dispositions in “kid speak”. We need to continually look for opportunities to connect with and promote the dispositions and these signs will visibly reinforce that connection. Mathletics Year 3-8 students (except those who have opted out) will receive personal Mathetics logins over the next few weeks. We expect that Mathletics will be used to support class learning and also home learning. Walk scooters/bikes in school Thank you to students who are addressing our school’s safety needs by walking their scooters and bikes when on the school grounds. We have constructed two big signs to help remind students. Thank you also to the parents who have supported the rule by reminding their children to ‘walk their wheels’. Greg Lewis Tumuaki [email protected] Student Awards The following children have earned student awards this fortnight. Russley Students Meet Prime Minister If your child is going to be absent…. Russley students, Shaia and Isla Sangkop and their family, got to meet with the Prime Minister of East Timor, Mr Rui Maria de Araújo and his wife Teresa António Madeira Soares on a recent visit to New Zealand. The PM and his wife are family friends of the girls’ grandmother who lives in East Timor. If your child is going to be away from school for any reason, the office needs to be notified please. This helps us to account for all students, particularly in the case of an emergency. His Excellency was in Christchurch for a couple of hours and was reportedly impressed at how much the girls had grown since the last time he was in New Zealand three years ago. A very proud occasion for the Sangkop family. Respectful Self-managers Team Players Creative Healthy Problem Solvers Congratulations! Ka pai! Cole Sutton Arien RassoulKhomeini Huzaifa Shaikh Theo Peters Text, phone or email the office, noting your child’s name, classroom and a reason for absence (eg ‘sick’ or ‘holiday’ this information is required for attendance coding). If you are taking your child out of school for an appointment during the school day, they are to be ‘signed out’ on the digital tablet at reception and ‘signed in’ on their return. Please do not burden busy teachers with the job of passing on absence messages — parents themselves should let the office know. Thank you for your assistance in helping the school to keep track of Russley students at all times.
