Newsletter Number 13
26th May 2014
Dear Parents, Students and Friends of
Cheltenham Primary School
Cheltenham Primary Welcomes Grandparents
to School
Our Open Day, during Education Week, was
wholeheartedly supported by our families, with
many grandparents able to join us on Tuesday.
Our School Band and Grade 2 children entertained
the large audience of grandparents in the hall,
followed by a homemade ‘Devonshire Tea’ and
savoury scones. This morning tea had been
carefully prepared by our students, in our kitchen
classroom program. All classrooms throughout
the day were full of happy children as their
extended family members visited and assisted
with learning tasks, and joined in with the learning
activities. As the photos show, everyone loved
having their nan or poppy, gran or granddad or
mum and dad visit. Thank you to all for making it
a very special day.
Book Fair
Last week Mrs Rose coordinated our annual Book
Fair to enable all children to view high quality
reading literature and to purchase any on display.
The book fair was extremely well attended by our
school community and whenever I visited the
library, I observed all children keenly completing
their ‘wish lists’ with popular book titles. Mrs
Rose manages a well-resourced library to provide
all children with a wide range of high interest
reading material. Proceeds from the book fair will
be used to purchase new reading material for the
children to read and enjoy in the future. Thank
you to Mrs Rose for organising the Book Fair and
to the school community for supporting it so well.
Lap-a-thon
Later in the week, the school held its annual Lapa-thon, jointly run by the PTFA and the Student
Representative Council. We congratulate all
children
on
their
enthusiastic approach
to the event, as it was
evident on the day
how many were trying
to
challenge
themselves
in
completing a maximum number of laps. In
speaking to the girls and boys afterwards, I was
pleased to hear of their pride in completing the
lap-a-thon, as overall, a significant number of laps
were completed in the set time allowed. Well
done to all for a super effort.
Prep Enrolments for 2015
The school is taking enrolments for 2015. Nearly
all of our families, [with a child currently at
Cheltenham Primary] and who intend enrolling a
sibling next year, have handed in their enrolment
form to the office. For any families who are still
to complete an enrolment form, please contact
Jezz or Robyn at your earliest opportunity, to
complete the enrolment process. We have many
new families booking school tours, with a view to
secure an enrolment place at Cheltenham Primary
School for next year. Our current families have
priority over new families, however, to assist with
forward planning, we need to be aware of student
numbers as soon as possible. Thank you for
attending to this matter if relevant to you.
ICT –Ipad Apps
Miss Toister has prepared a parent reference flyer
as an overview of the apps being utilised for
teaching and learning purposes at the school.

your benefit.

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
On Wednesday,
21st
May

in the Kingston
District Cross
Country
competition at
Mentone Grammar Playing Fields, Keysborough.
Finishing in the top eight and going through to the
division round on Wednesday, 4th June at Cornish
College, Bangholme for the 9/10 year olds
running 2km was Star Waata and Charles Diano.
For the 11 year olds running 3km was Ella
Hamstead, Rex Kilburn and Lachie Bourke. For
the 12/13 year olds running 3km was Lachie
Richards. An honourable mention goes to Sarah

Well done to everyone who attended on the day,
particularly students. You encouraged and
supported your teammates to help them achieve
their best. You all had strong starts and finishes in
the races and looked amazing as a team. Thanks to
the parents, teacher and friends for supporting the
team on the day. Every bit of encouragement
helps!
To all the students who ran, we are proud of you
and all your efforts preparing for the day. Good
luck to the students through to the Division

We would like to congratulate all of the students
who participated in the Lap-a-thon last Thursday,
22nd May. The event was a great success with
students trying their hardest to complete as many
laps as they could within the 45 minutes. Some
ran, some jogged and some walked but everyone
had a wonderful time! Thank you to everyone
who helped support this PTFA fundraiser for our
school. Students now have until Thursday, 5th
June to collect and return their sponsorship
money and go into a raffle draw – major prize
Scooter and helmet.

LIBRARY
Well done and thank you to the whole school for
supporting our Book Fair this year. We managed
to raise $1045.00 to purchase new books for our
Library. A very special thank you goes to Judy
Davies, Miranda Brett and Xena Ward for
assisting at the Book Fair.
We have been lucky to book a day visit next term
with Author and Illustrator, Leigh Hobbs. Leigh
Hobbs is well known for his Old Tom and
Horrible Harriet series. He will be visiting the
whole school on Tuesday, 15th July for an
interactive session to practise literacy skills in
character development and storytelling. The cost
of this incursion is covered by the yearly activities
levy.

NUDE FOOD WEDNESDAYS
Don’t forget – “Nude Food Wednesdays” is every
Wednesday where all children will be encouraged
to bring only packaged free foods in re-usable
containers. This rubbish free initiative can
encourage children to try different foods that they
may not usually like to include in their
lunchboxes. This will encourage environmentally
friendly lunches by eliminating all unnecessary
wrapping!
