Stewardship
Fiscal Year July 2016 —June 2017
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK:
Today we enter once more the holiest week of the
year, made so by the Church’s celebration of the Paschal Mystery of our Lord. Our focus begins
today with the reading of the Passion. We know of
these sacred events because of those witnesses, who
through the work of the Holy Spirit, have made them
known. The first witnesses were of course the
Apostles and Mary Magdalene, the “apostle to the
apostles” , who brought to them the message of the
risen Christ. Later would come the powerful
witness of St. Paul of Tarsus, who saw the risen Lord
and believed. To this would be added those who may
not have been eyewitness but who heard the message
of the gospel from them and believed and then gave
their own testimony, these are the martyrs of the early
Church and the first centuries of persecution. In his
Easter message for 1998, Pope Saint John Paul II
spoke of this testimony to the crucified and risen
Christ, which has continued in the life of the Church
from generation to generation.

Did You Know?
That in both Catholic and Protestant traditions, Joseph is
regarded as the patron saint of workers and fathers.
Pope Pius XI declared him to be both the patron and
the protector of the Catholic Church, in addition to
his patronages of the sick and of a happy death, due
to the belief that he died in the presence of Jesus and
Mary. YOU CAN LOOK IT UP!
Question: How do we know that St. Peter, our first
Pope, was married?
Last Week’s Answer: Who broke away from the
The Holy Father proclaimed: “Some have been
witnesses even to the shedding of their blood and,
thanks to them, the Church has continued on her way,
also amid harsh persecutions and obstinate rejection.
On the strength of this unending testimony the Church
has grown, and is now spread throughout the world.
Today is the feast of all witnesses; including those of
our own century, who have proclaimed Christin the
midst of the "great tribulation" (Rev 7:14),confessing
his death and resurrection in the concentration camps
and the gulags, under the threat of bombs and guns,
amid the terror unleashed by the blind hatred which
has tragically engulfed individuals and whole nations.
Today they come from the great tribulation and sing
the glory of Christ: in him, rising from the shadows of
death, life has been made manifest.”
To this great company of witnesses we are called to
add our voices. To do this we, too, must meet and
know the crucified and risen Christ. The liturgies of
Holy Week and Easter provide for us the most beautiful and fitting way to do just that, to be united with
Him in His passion and know Him in the joy of His
risen life. Renewed through this Holy week we can
then add our witness to the great company of saints
who continue to sing His praise as they now behold
the glory that is His.
Church first: Martin Luther, John Calvin or Henry
VIII starting the Protestant Reformation? Martin
Luther in 1517 broke from the Church.
