An interview with new County Librarian Sally Ainsworth
SALLY AINSWORTH, LIBRARIAN
After 11 months of being our County Librarian, Jessica
Hudson took a new position as County Librarian of the
Nevada County Library System. She left because of
family issues and we were very sorry to see her go. The
Tehama County Board of Supervisors have chosen current
Children’s Librarian Sally Ainsworth to run the County
Library for the next year. Even though Sally has been with
the library for many years, I thought it would be nice to
get to know a bit more about her and what she would like
to see in the future for our County Library System.

Q. Will you tell us a bit about yourself ?
I was born in Red Bluff and have lived in the area all my
life. I have three sons, Wesley, Garrett, and Taylor. I have
been very blessed with five grandchildren, three boys and
two girls. I am married to Jim Ainsworth, a retired Police
officer. I scrapbook for my children and grandchildren and I love to cook. Being a librarian, one of my
favorite things to do is read (and has been since I was little). I also love to travel and spend time with
the grandkids.

Q. How long have you been working for the Tehama County Library?
(530)!824-7050
I have been working here at the library, this time around, for 18 years. I also worked for the library
right out of High School for 5 years. The library was in the Kraft building then. I left after those five
years to pursue other interests and then came back.
I came to work here again to do children's programming. I love working with children and I felt I
could make a difference by teaching the love of reading to the kids. It has been very rewarding and
something I will continue to do always.
Q.! What other jobs have you had and how have they helped you prepare for this job?
I worked for a chain of clothing stores for 12 years and was a district supervisor by the time I left. I
loved working with people and working there was where I got my love for doing displays. I thoroughly

Librarian in the Spotlight Continued
enjoy decorating the library and it's always fun to make displays inside
the foyer that catch the interest of library patrons. Every summer, my
staff and I decorate almost the entire library for the Children’s
Summer Reading Program which is always themed. There's nothing
like seeing the excitement on the kids’ faces when they walk in that
first day and see how the library has been transformed.
Q. What's your favorite part of being a librarian?
My favorite part of being a librarian is helping patrons find the
answers they are looking for when they come in. It is very rewarding
to start looking for answers for someone, find what they need, then
feel their gratitude. I also get really excited when mothers tell me how
much better their son or daughter is doing with their reading because
they've been attending our library programs. That is the ultimate
reward ... it's one of the main reasons we're here. One of the other
great perks of doing children's programming is I get lots of hugs from
the preschoolers on Wednesdays during preschool story hour.
Q.! What is your primary goal for your term as Librarian and
how can the Friends of the Library help you achieve that goal?
I don't really know how long I will be in this position but when my
time is finished I want to be able to say I made a difference. I have
some ideas for improving public service and some programs I would
love to start but most of all I really want to increase circulation and
increase the amount of new books we have to offer.! The Friends of the
library is a wonderful organization. They have been so supportive of
me since the first day I started here as the Children's Librarian. I feel
that the members and myself have the same goals for the library and I
know that when I ask for help with anything I will get it. I am looking
forward to working closely with them to make a difference in my
community.
Los Molinos Quilt Fundraiser
by Melissa Grygla, Circulation Supervisor
Jeannie Gallagher generously donated a quilt to the Friends of the Library to raffle for funds to
help keep the Los Molinos Library open. Tickets for this raffle were sold throughout October
and November, and cost $1.00 for 1 or $5.00 for 3. The prize winner was drawn on Monday,
December 5th and Ruth Brooks won this gorgeous quilt. !
This fundraiser raised an amazing $1,020.00!
Library users, volunteers and purchasers of raffle tickets we THANK YOU so much for your
support with this fundraiser.

Warm the Hearts of Children in Tehama
County!
by Melissa Grygla, Circulation Supervisor
Each branch of the library has a wish list of
books. This month, you'll find a display of
mittens by the front desk. Each mitten contains
the title, author and price of a children's or
young adult book that the library needs.
We do, after all, hate turning kids (or adults)
away without the book they're wanting to read!
These titles change frequently, based on
requests from children. Right now the list
includes “A King’s Ransom” by Jude Watson
and “Homer the Library Cat” by Reeve
Lindbergh, each available for under $15.00.
To purchase a book, bring cash or a check
(made payable to the Tehama County
Friends of the Library) to the circulation
desk at any library branch and the library will
order the book.
Make a child smile, and give the library a gift
this year!

An update from the Tehama County Friends of the Library
Dear library friends & patrons, happy New Year! It's the time of year for resolutions, setting ambitious
goals and striving to attain them. I would like to suggest some resolutions for the Tehama County Friends
of the Library.
Our organization exists to support our library financially and to promote our library in the community. In
keeping with that, I propose that we strive to increase the amount of money we give to the library in 2012
by at least 20% over last year, and that we aim to double the size of our membership. Reaching these
goals will require focus and dedication, but I think they are both realistic and attainable.
We already have a good start. The Friends organization has recently been awarded a grant from United
Way projected to bring in more than $6000. United Way's generous support gives us a leg up toward our
goal.
However, our work is far from over. We need your support. Right now, I'm not asking you to "dig deep" in your wallet. It's only $5 per
year to put your name on our roll, showing that you are a friend of our library. When we apply for grants, potential donors want to
know that the community is behind us. Joining the Tehama County Friends of the Library is how you can tell them.
If you aren't yet a member, or if you haven't yet renewed for 2012, now is the time. Please join the Friends of the Library. Forms are
available on pages 7-8 of this publication.

An update on the Los Molinos Library Branch
Happy New Year! Have you seen the new paint job? Library
staff and volunteers have been working to get the shelves and
books dusted and the books back in place after the wonderful
paint job. Many thanks to the Job Training Center for providing
volunteers to paint. It is so bright and clean and pleasing to visit.
From Corning
Now it us up to the community to USE the library. We have
shown our desire to keep the branch open with great fundraisers
and volunteers who are willing to give of their time for this great
cause. The third requirement for being able to keep the doors
open is USE. So please support the library by using it.
by Judy Turner, Vice-President, Corning Friends of the Library
An update from the Corning Friends of the Library
The Corning Friends of the Library had
a successful book sale on October 14
and 15. We brought in almost $700
including donations. We received many
donated books for the sale, but we also
sold many and gave others to the
library to put into circulation. We
continue to need more book donations
– our next book sale will be in March.

On December 8 our Friends group had a Christmas social with
cookies and finger foods instead of our regular monthly meeting.
We were glad to have the chance to say “Goodbye and good
wishes,” to our Librarian Jessica Hudson.
January 6 was a somber day for our group. There was a
graveside service for Doris Gable, former Corning resident and
long-time member of Corning Friends. Doris was one of the
founding members of the Corning Friends of the Library and
served as President for several years.
We are finding our new meeting date and time works well for us.
We now meet the second Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm at
the Corning Library.
Upcoming Event: The Corning Friends will host “Corning in
the Morning” on February 9, 8:00 – 9:00 am at the Corning
Library. This is an opportunity for us to show members of the
Corning Chamber of Commerce what is happening in the library.
Anyone interested in the Corning Library is also welcome to
attend. Refreshments will be served.

What’s happening in the Tehama County Library System
Well the New Year is here and myself, I think the only
resolution I am going to make is to read more books. !There
are so many fantastic authors out there; I don’t know where to
start. !I will keep everyone posted when I find one I just can’t
put down.
• Thanks to all our Bunco players who came out to our fall
fundraiser. !It was a huge success. !Partnering with the
Police Activities league we each made $920.00 for our
programs. !It was so much fun. !We gave away 70 or more
door prizes and $450.00 in cash. !If you missed it please
watch for our spring Bunco. Get tickets early as we do fill
up.
• The winter nights sure can get cold. !How about staying in
and having a family game night? If you don’t already
know we now have board games to check out, at our Red
Bluff branch. !Come down and see what we have and plan
a game night for your family.
• Last year the library partnered with the Cattlewomen and
had a Children’s Cowboy Poetry Contest, in conjunction
with the cowboy poetry readings held during rodeo week. !
We had lots of entries and are hoping to make it even
bigger this year. !The information to compete in the contest
Sally Ainsworth, County Librarian
will be sent out through the schools. !We would love to
have more poems by the kids this year. !Please ask us here
at the library if your little ones are interested. !Materials
will go out in early March.
We hope to see you soon at the library, checking out all the
new materials we have, including board games. !Happy New
Year to everyone from the library staff.
Teenagers are Running the Library!
Well, maybe not yet but they certainly have a hand in it!
Budget crunches and staffing shortages have forced us to look
for creative ways to fill the gaps. Let’s face it, teens and young
adults are some of the sharpest at using computers so we’re
tapping into that. We are now actively recruiting teen
volunteers to work at the front desk of the library in hopes of
freeing up some time for regular staff to get other

jobs done. If you know a teen or have a son/daughter, niece/
nephew, grandson/granddaughter that is good with computers
and wants to gain some on-the-job experience working in the
public sector, send them in. We’ll tell them what the job entails
and maybe sign them up! Working at the library looks good on
a resume, is a good source of community service and can even
sometimes meet a school requirement.

Children’s Programming
by Sally Ainsworth, Children’s Librarian
An update on Tehama County Children’s Programing
Well, the library sure knows how to end the year with a bang, or should I say a
jingle. Children that attended the story hour during the week of Christmas had a big
surprise when Santa strolled in, sang Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer with them
and then settled in to take holiday orders from the kids.! For the holiday story hour
the children listened to holiday stories, sang some carols, frosted and decorated
cookies.! But … the biggest hit was Santa setting the kids on his lap and listening to
the requests for Christmas gifts.! Lots of the kids this year wanted dirt bikes, laptops,
iPhones, but I still heard some of them asking for books. All in all the kids had a
wonderful time as did Santa and we even had some frosted cookies left over for the
staff.!
If you aren’t attending our preschool story with your little ones, make it your New
Year’s resolution to do so.!
The staff at the Tehama County Library wishes you and your family a happy New
Year.

Story Hour in a Box — Coming Soon
One of the best ways to instill the love of books and reading in
children is to get them started early. The library presents a
yearly Summer Reading Program for kids of all ages and a
weekly pre-school program for those not yet in school. Story
hours are an excellent way for children to learn the love of
reading and gain essential skills.
Unfortunately, staffing shortages prevent us from holding as
many story hours as we’d like, so we will soon be offering kits,
or “project boxes”, with all the materials needed to hold your
own story hour.
by Tina Sanchez, Library Staff
Project boxes will be offered to all agencies that deal with
children including schools and daycares. Each one will be
themed and the contents will go along with whatever the theme
is. Some of the themes that will be available are Christmas,
Halloween, Thanksgiving, Fall/Back-to-School, Beach and the
ABCs, just to name a few. Materials inside may include a
combination of items such as books, movies, puppets, coloring
pages, activity sheets, crafts and more!
So look for our “Story Hour in a Box” kits to come out soon!
USED BOOK DONATIONS
The Friends of the Library organizations in Red Bluff and Corning will gladly accept donations of good-condition
used books. You may drop off any donations at the Red Bluff, Corning, or Los Molinos branches of the Library.
These books will be used by our libraries or sold at our books sales and the monies earned will be used for the
benefit of the libraries.
