February 24, 2017 Launched into Learning... in Mrs. Morrow’s First Grade Classroom Blasting Off in Literacy This week we used our comprehension strategies, inferring and visualizing and read a non-fiction narrative. We had fun with the book “Owen and Mzee: The True Story of a Remarkable Friendship” They made many inferences throughout the book. For example they inferred why Owen chose Mzee and found they each had different inferences and they were all CORRECT! Comprehension: Accuracy: We are beginning our unit on CVCe words which means Consonant Vowel Consonant e(silent e). We focused this week only on a_e. These word families were _ate, _ame, _ane, _ave, _ade, _ake etc. For some of us this is a huge switch in our thinking. Looking for “cvce” words when you’re reading at home and pointing them out would be beneficial to your child. Writing Feb. 24,2017 Dear Parents, We are learning about writing friendly letters. We learned the parts of the letter and we’ve been writing each other this week. You will be receiving a letter in the mail from your student! So be looking in the mailbox for a letter! Love, Mrs. Morrow __________________________ Math: Reaching for the Stars! We are continuing in our geometry unit. This week we did a 3D shape walk around the school and took pictures to share with our classmates. We found our school is full of 3D shapes! We also are continuing to use the geometry vocabulary when describing a shape’s attributes: faces, edges, vertices, etc. Mission Control Share Topics for March: Next week: Share your favorite Dr. Seuss book. Parent Teacher Conferences are around the corner and if you don’t remember, I firmly believe in having your child present. At this conference I plan on having them show you what they are doing in reading, math and writing. They will lead us through the conference. No report card will be issued at this time, however we will develop a plan or goal for moving forward through the end of the year. If you need to speak to me privately, I can make that happen. I love celebrating your child’s growth and development with you!
