A message from our
Hospital President & CEO
Exciting new things are happening at Joseph Brant Hospital. 2011-2012 was an important year for us, as
together as one big team we were able to accomplish many great things. Our staff, our physicians, our
Foundation, our Board Members, our Auxiliary and our volunteers have all done extraordinary work that
we are very thankful for.
In August of 2011 we received wonderful news that the provincial government had officially approved
our Hospital Redevelopment and Expansion Project. The City of Burlington has committed $60 million,
and together with the $60 million Capital Campaign the Hospital Foundation is raising with the support
of our generous donors, we are turning a once distant vision of hospital renewal into a promising new
reality.
Our Hospital is continuing to evolve and we are proud of the results we are seeing. In 2011 we introduced
a new Strategic Plan which has set the framework and provided the road map of how we work over the
next three years. We will strive to improve health care in Burlington and with our vision of delivering
Compassionate Care, Exemplary Service, Every Time as well as the support of our hospital staff, donors
and community, we know we have an unstoppable team.
Every day, we are encouraged by how the Hospital continues to move forward. Through the generous
gifts from our donors, the devotion of Campaign Cabinet and Ambassadors Council, we are able to
work together to meet higher care standards, introduce innovative equipment, and support new services
– all for the care of the community. Thank you to all of our donors and supportive partners who are
committed to the Hospital, its future and how we are changing health care in Burlington, for generations
to come.

President and Board Chair
Thank you for your help in making this an incredible year for our Hospital. As we reflect on the past 12 months,
we have a lot to celebrate: together we have achieved a number of milestones that position our Hospital for an
exciting future.
In 2011/12 Joseph Brant Hospital celebrated its 50th anniversary of serving Burlington and the greater area. In
addition to this, we also received the long awaited approval of our Hospital’s Redevelopment and Expansion
Project, allowing us to continue to build on our tradition of serving our patients and our community. And
finally, we made history when we gathered together for the official launch of our $60 million Capital Campaign
in support of the Hospital’s Redevelopment and Expansion. This Campaign marks the largest of its kind for both
our Foundation, and the City of Burlington. It is incredible to see how far we have come in only one year, and
how our collective efforts are helping to build a new era of health care in our community!
We are so fortunate to have loyal and passionate donors who are committed to Joseph Brant Hospital and who
have been by our side as we begin this exciting journey. It has been an honour to lead the Hospital’s Foundation
over the last year and to see the impact of your support.
You are helping to shape the future of our Hospital. Your generous support helps to put the best tools in the
hands of our health care professionals. Every gift makes a difference to our Hospital’s core programs and its
critical needs.

Celebrating our Milestones
Thank you for making our new beginning a reality. Your continued
commitment will build a community hospital that will serve us, our
children and our grandchildren for the next 50 years and beyond.
On January 12, 2012, over 500 donors, volunteers and friends gathered at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre
to help kick off the $60 million Capital Campaign for the Joseph Brant Hospital Redevelopment and Expansion
Project.
The Foundation was overjoyed to announce three historic gifts: the Auxiliary to Joseph Brant Hospital has
donated $5 million; the four Rotary Clubs of Burlington have made a combined $1 million gift; and the
organizers and sponsors of the J.B. 2 Day Men’s Invitational Golf Tournament have donated $1 million to the
Capital Campaign.
These initial donations provided the Campaign with tremendous momentum and established a terrific
foundation on which to build. Fundraising efforts continued since then with great success, including the
extraordinary support from members of our leadership. This includes members of the Foundation and Hospital
Boards, the Campaign Cabinet and the Hospital’s Senior Management, bringing our total giving to date to the
$10.1 million mark as of March 31st, 2012.
Our fundraising has continued since with great success. Our goal of $60 million is ambitious – and achievable –
with the continued and outstanding support of our donors.

Overcoming obstacles and making a difference
“I am a breast cancer survivor,” says Diane Bentivegna, smiling through teary eyes as she reflects on her
journey. In November 2009, Diane was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer caused by a very
aggressive grade three tumour.
Aside from all the unknowns that come with cancer, Diane and Angelo were in an unfamiliar situation –
they were helpless, and this was new to the couple who had been helping people and charities, including
Joseph Brant Hospital, for over two decades through their Burlington business, Mrs. B’s Gifthouse.
Joseph Brant Hospital’s Cancer Clinic was there to comfort Diane when she needed it most, addressing all
her questions and fears about her cancer and her treatment.
“The care I received from physicians and staff was outstanding. Throughout my treatment program, every
member of my care team helped me feel welcome and comfortable. I was greeted by name by receptionists,
nurses, doctors and volunteers. With their care and attention, I always knew I was in capable hands. Joseph
Brant Hospital Cancer Clinic became my home away from home.“
Diane’s treatment ended in June 2010 and she visits the Cancer Clinic twice a year for regular follow-up
appointments. Diane and her husband, Angelo, credit the Hospital for giving them the greatest gift of all –
Diane’s health. And now more than ever, they feel a special connection to the Joseph Brant Hospital Cancer
Clinic and the “guardian angels” who were there to help Diane overcome breast cancer.
To show their appreciation and to help ensure Joseph Brant Hospital has state-of-the art equipment for
early diagnosis of breast cancer, Diane and Angelo have been fundraising to support the purchase of
a digital mammography unit with a biopsy attachment. The digital mammography unit with a biopsy
attachment takes x-rays of the breast using digital technologies which produce images that can be
manipulated by radiologist in a way that could never be achieved with conventional mammography. As a
result, smaller cancers can be detected earlier and suspicious areas can be biopsied immediately.
The Bentivegnas’ fundraising efforts began last October with an initiative called “Biscotti 911.” Angelo and
Diane sold their infamous Mrs. B’s Gifthouse biscotti at many businesses across Burlington and donated all
of the proceeds for the new equipment.
Over time, this small biscotti fundraiser has grown into something much bigger. Angelo and Diane, with
the help of various local businesses, service clubs and organizations, have organized an event to raise
funds for the mammography unit: Beauty and the Bistro – Be our Guest, Save our Breasts will take place on
October 20, 2012 at the Leggat Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac Dealership in Burlington.
“Our goal is to show the same incredible passion, dedication and commitment that our guardian angels
gave us during Diane’s treatment at Joseph Brant Hospital. We want to ensure Joseph Brant Hospital has the
necessary equipment that will impact the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in our community.”
Thanks to the dedication and kindness of Angelo and Diane, Joseph Brant Hospital will have the necessary
equipment is in place to care for patients for years to come.

Giving back and shaping our future
Frances Roesch knows first-hand what it means to put your faith in the hands of health care
professionals in a time of need.
“My daughter, Radley, was born blind,” she says, reflecting on the critical care her newborn needed
after a difficult birth six years ago.
Frances spent much of Radley’s early months bringing her to hospitals for tests to determine the
cause of her blindness. Radley, who is now six years old, has gained significant vision though hospital
visits for assessments. Tests and continuing care are part of her reality.
When Frances joined Joseph Brant Hospital as the Director of Medical Affairs in 2011, she came
with a full understanding of how hospitals operate and and a deep appreciation of the importance of
giving back. A few weeks into her position, she learned about the Hospital’s annual capital equipment
needs and one item specifically hit close to home – the oxygen blender for the Special Care Nursery
in the Maternal and Child Unit.
Oxygen blenders mix medical air and oxygen to the desired concentration, to ensure newborns
receive the appropriate amount of oxygen. Every newborn is different and during resuscitation, their
oxygen needs vary. This equipment prevents any damage to the newborn’s eyes or other organs from
an oxygen concentration that is too high.
Because of her experience, Frances wanted to ensure that Joseph Brant Hospital’s Special Care
Nursery had access to this critical equipment. She and her husband, Glen Pyle, signed up for monthly
giving right away to purchase the oxygen blender.
“With Radley, there have been many unknowns and challenges. It’s the uncertainty that has been
the hardest to accept. We spent a lot of time trying to determine the possible causes of Radley’s
condition and whether it was due to a high concentration of oxygen. After time it became clear for us
that this was not the cause. We know the oxygen blender can help other families avoid some of this
uncertainty,” says Frances. “This is something we can do, something that is tangible and something
that will help other families in their time of need.”

Bridging our past and our future
Susan and Bob Busby believe that philanthropy has the power to impact the lives of many, transform
communities and most importantly, create change.
Philanthropy is a Busby family tradition. Susan and Bob have been faithful donors to the Hospital for over 20
years and their gifts have had a tremendous impact on the care that the Joseph Brant Hospital provides our
community. Over time, Susan and Bob have contributed to many of the Hospital’s greatest needs including the
Surgical and Dialysis Units and Emergency Department.
One of their earlier and most transformational gifts was to the Tomorrow is Here Campaign which helped pave
the way for a new Cancer Clinic and an expanded Emergency Department. It was their generosity during this
campaign that also inspired many others to give back. Susan and Bob are true leaders – as they lead by example,
inspiring others around them to do the same.
In addition to their philanthropic support over the years, the Busbys have also contributed to Joseph Brant
Hospital through the gift of their time. Susan’s past involvement includes chairing the Foundation Board of
Directors and the Hospital’s Board of Governors, and now being a member of the Campaign Cabinet leading our
fundraising activities in support of the Redevelopment and Expansion Project. Over the years, Susan and Bob
have increased the profile of Joseph Brant Hospital and have helped to raise funds, friends and awareness of the
Hospital’s needs.
As the Hospital enters a new era of health care, Susan and Bob will continue to make their mark through
supporting Joseph Brant Hospital’s new Learning Centre. This Centre will be a major component of the
Hospital’s Redevelopment and Expansion Project. The Learning Centre will welcome physicians, residents,
staff, and community at large by becoming a hub for professionals to gather, learn and share, and further our
commitment to becoming a leading practice hospital.
“We feel good about our gift to the Hospital. Supporting our Hospital’s Redevelopment and Expansion is the
greatest need for Burlington today. We are confident our support will have a positive impact on not only the
Hospital but also our greater community.”
Susan and Bob continue to be pillars of our community and their generosity and leadership helps to enable the
Hospital to fulfill its commitment to the health of citizens in Burlington and beyond.

Our Hospital’s six core programs – Medicine, Surgery, Emergency, Maternal & Child, Mental Health, and
Rehabilitation and Complex Care – rely on countless pieces of equipment to care for our patients every day.
Government funding does not cover all of our needs and expenses and that’s why the Foundation commits to
raising funds to support the purchase of critical equipment for diagnosis and treatment.
Our success would not be possible without the help of our community. Our donors are the reason we are able

Simulation Equipment for the Emergency Department
The Advanced Life Support mannequin enables nurses to perform all the crucial
tasks to learn and practice reality-based scenarios. Education research has proven
repeatedly that professionals revert to ‘muscle memory’ when performing skills in
resuscitation situations. Our staff are now able to train accurately to respond to
these life threatening situations through the use of state-of-the-art equipment that
can be fully resuscitated, have IV lines inserted, and can even verbally respond to
actions that are performed.

Thank you for supporting The Crystal Ball
The Crystal Ball Gala is the Foundation’s largest and most successful annual fundraiser. With the help of our
sponsors, donors, community partners and volunteers, the Crystal Ball has raised over $3 million to date.
Since the Gala’s inception in 2001 - the proceeds from this event continue to purchase equipment for our
Hospital’s programs and critical equipment needs.
On May 14, 2011, Mercedes Benz Burlington, graciously hosted our Gala, and provided a beautiful and
modern backdrop for the 2011 Crystal Ball which also marked our Hospital’s 50th anniversary.
Over 700 community leaders, sponsors, friends and volunteers were in attendance, helping to raise $250,000
to purchase a new Patient Monitoring System for our critical care areas including the Intensive Care Unit,
Post Anesthetic Care Unit (surgery recovery), the Progressive Care Unit (for patients whose conditions are
stabilizing after leaving the ICU), Emergency and Telemetry (for cardiac patients).
