NURSING SUMMER SCHOOL
The purpose of the Nursing Summer School is to provide potential recruits to the pre-registration nursing
programme with better support and information to ensure they make the right career choice.
DATES: 17th – 24th July 2017
The number of places at the Nursing Summer School this year are limited to twenty (20) and these are being
offered to senior secondary school pupils throughout Grampian, who meet the requirements, on a first come
first serve basis. Thus it is important that any of your pupils who are seriously considering a career in nursing
apply for a place as soon as possible.
The Robert Gordon University and NHS Grampian deliver pre-registration nurse education at BN (Hons) and
BN levels for Adult Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, and Children and Young People's Nursing. Whilst there
are some similarities across these fields of nursing practice, for example, the professional attitudes and
values-base, qualified nurses possess knowledge and skills that are unique to each field. The pre-registration
nursing programme challenges students to develop the personal and professional requirements for
registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Thereafter, each field of practice offers rewarding and
diverse career opportunities.
Current students have highlighted the benefits of having had some clinical practice experience prior to
commencing pre-registration nursing education as it lessens the 'reality shock' sometimes felt. The Nursing
Summer School is not designed as work experience rather it provides the participants with a comprehensive
and structured insight into nursing in each of the three fields of practice. The Nursing Summer School does
not consider or address midwifery.
The Nursing Summer School experience will provide participants with simulated clinical nursing practice
within the University's state of the art clinical skills centre. Participants will also have access to a range of
practising registered nurses and they will spend some time in clinical locations under the supervision of
registered nurses. In addition, there will be opportunities to talk with current student nurses and work with
members of the public who volunteer to role play patients in simulated skills practise sessions. Although
participants will have to come to Robert Gordon University for two days during the week, they will have the
opportunity to undertake the visits to the Placement areas in Elgin.
