Great Salt Lake Council Shooting Sports • Boy Scouts of America adheres to its longstanding policy of teaching its youth and adult members the safe, responsible, intelligent handling, care, and use of firearms, air rifles, BB guns, and archery equipment in planned, carefully managed, and supervised programs. What Falls Inside Shooting Sports • • • • • • Rifle, Shotgun, Pistol, Black powder BB guns, Paintball, Air soft, Nerf Catapults, Trebuchet Sling shots, Water balloon launchers Archery, Tomahawk Throwing Any other method to propel an object using a devise for assistance. What is Currently Banned • • • • • Fully Automatic Firearms Explosives, Exploding Targets Explosive Ammunition Tracer Ammunition Shooting at people, Image’s of a person on any shooting sports activity • Shooting at an unauthorized location Cannons and Large-Bore Artillery • Units are not authorized, under any circumstances, to use a cannon or any • other large-bore artillery device. So Who Can Shoot What • Tiger scout, Cub Scout age. • Archery, BB guns, Slingshots, Wrist Rockets. • Note, No firearms or handguns of any type are permitted in the Cub Scout program So Who Can Shoot What • Boy Scout and Varsity Scout programs • All items included in Cub Scouting • 22 caliber bolt / breach Rifles, (NO tube feed) • 22 short, 22 long, 22 long rifle only • Air Rifles using .177 cal pellets • Muzzle loading Rifles / Shotguns (no flintlock) • 12 / 20 gauge Shotguns • 7.5 to 9 shot only, Target load • Note: No handguns are permitted in the Boy Scout and Varsity Scout programs except for those approved by the BSA National Council So Who Can Shoot What • Venturing and Sea Scout • All items included in Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Varsity programs • Center fire rifles of any caliber • Semiautomatic pistols and revolvers • Muzzle loading Handguns So Where Can We Shoot • Tiger scout, Cub Scout age. • Council / District camps and events Only • Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing and Sea Scout • BSA Shooting Sports Approved public / private ranges. • – • Lee Kay, SASS range, Bountiful Lions, Kaysville range. Three private ranges, Near Vernon, Herriman and Tooele BSA scout camps • NO shooting at/in areas not previously approved by shooting sports committee, i.e. west desert, uncle Joes farm etc. IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO SHOOT • Yes you need to have the following • • • • Tour Plan filed and approved (non-council camp) Two people for the following BSA/NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO) BSA/NRA/Archery Certified Instructor for discipline you are shooting These two people need to have Current/Active Certifications • Eye and hearing protection for all participants Where do I find these 2 people • 1st Look in your local units. • 2nd Look /Ask Your district shooting sports • 3rd Look in the Council Shooting Sports Committee Can I Become a Instructor • YES – The Great Salt Lake council has an active training program run by Bill Wagner. • To find the current training schedule and pricing go to following • https://www.saltlakescouts.org/nrainstructors Can I Become A Instructor • The cost for BSA Leaders is $30 for NRA Basic Instructor course and $80 per discipline course: All Courses will be taught at Bill Wagner’s home. Like What •Simple based on the level of activity, there is a level of instruction for the scouts. OK what are these levels •Level One, Air gun shooting experience •Level Two, open shooting experience •Level Three, On-Going shooting experience •Level four, Competitive shooting experience •Each level applied to the discipline •Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Muzzle Loading OK What Is the Instruction •Level One, five minute safety briefing •Level Two, thirty minute safety briefing •Level Three, 3-hour NRA First Steps course •Level four, 3-hour NRA First Steps course •Each level of instruction to be taught by the NRA instructor in that discipline What about Council Events • This is the card that is needed every time he or she shoots with our Council What else do I need to get. • • • • Unit leaders will need to find and provide Authorized firearms for level of scouting Appropriate ammo Eye and Hearing protection. That covers firearms what about Archery • Archery Instructors need to be Level One certified. A Level Two Archery Instructor may teach a Level One course • Archery Merit Badge should be taught by Instructor • Archery activities are to have 10-15 minute safety briefing Archery Continued • Were to do Archery • Archery Range is available at the Lee Kay Center on the west side. The Archery Range at Camp Tracy is available for use except in the Winter season. Q & A’s •I’m in a LDS unit we will just have a priesthood activity. •PLEASE read the green book. The activity arm of the priesthood in the United States is the BSA. •In the event something happens the Boy Scouts of America’s insurance is Void, as is most Local Church’s insurance, You are standing alone. • Remember, when your unit recharterd last November, the Sponsoring organization head signed that your unit would comply with all BSA policies in order to receive your charter.
