Behind the Captivating Claims 5

Behind the Captivating Claims
5
1. Behind the captivating claims
of shows and movies, sport and news,
are powers and systems, made to serve,
that fail, deceive, enslave, abuse.
The lure of honor, flag, or gun,
unnoticed, like the air we breathe,
pervades and warms our inmost heart,
and bids us worship and believe.
Ref. But Christ, who bore the cross,
will melt the fear of death,
erasing all our sins,
and fooling all the powers
with resurrected love. Alleluia!
2. The ancient gods of lust and greed
have reappeared in new disguise
to woo us into big deceits
with self-deceiving little lies.
The daily domination game
entices with its throbbing sound,
yet empty spins the carousel,
forever going round and round.
Ref. But Christ, who bore the cross,...
3. Who else but Jesus could refuse
to conquer in the name of God,
make selfish bread, or drag to faith
a crowd by wonders shocked and awed?
Who else but Christ could practice peace,
and heal, and teach us to resist
the deadly domination game
without a dagger or a fist?
Ref. For Christ, who bore the cross,...
4. Who else but Christ could face and feel
his body torn like broken bread,
forgive his torturers, and trust
that hope would live, though he were dead?
Who else but Christ can unify
our clashing creeds and warring views
and help us keep our aim and end
embodied in the means we use?
Ref. For Christ, who bore the cross,...
