The creativity and ingenuity of our enrichment leaders and drivers kept an even tempo in our village this summer. Our residents were swimming, dancing, singing, learning, sharing and supporting one another. Our garden survived the heat and even sprouted red-vine spinach as tomatoes left for the season. Fresh flowers are peeking their way to the top. Birds are everywhere, thanks to continual daily feeding by our residents. Sam Evans and family have agreed to generously donate a Martin House near our fountain. Martins east of the Rocky Mountains are dependent on human-supplied housing. Houston is fast approaching a migratory bird season and we look forward to supplying them with a home. Our entire village will be celebrating Nigeria this month— its customs, dances, songs, food and even its fashion. Each month we will continue to explore new nations of the world and their diverse richness, adding unique recipes to our online cookbook along the way ... always bringing the outside in and exploring boundaries where we can. Last and most important, we have said good-bye to some very special people in our midst. Chuck Mussman, one of the youngest residents in our community, passed away suddenly in June. We will remember his wit, wisdom, kindness and laughter and are better for having known him. RIP sir. In July, Jamaal Tucker, our wonderful driver and activities assistant, decided to pursue a new career path and return to school. We miss him terribly but wish the best for him in his new endeavors. Our spirits are not as light without him. In late August, our amazing Executive Director, Ronnie Shakir, is leaving us to retire and spend more time with his family. He was a fine leader and embraced all that Belmont Village is about. We all learned from him and wish him the best in his new journey. Paula Felton-Werner, our former Executive Director, will be returning to Belmont Village as interim director while we carefully fill that leadership spot. We welcome her home! As always, we are blessed. Resident Spotlight Not many people have life stories like Tom “Belmont” Lisenby and I don’t think anyone can tell them with such hilarious and rich embellishment. I am so glad that we have chosen to honor Tom in our Resident Spotlight in the Great Room on September 26th. It is an event you won’t want to miss. Tom is a native of Louisiana where his parents met and married. His dad was a native of Nashville where he founded a fine boys’ academy, The Web School, which Tom would attend later in life. Tom describes waiting for a train and sitting on a steam trunk as he headed for LSU as “high adventure.” He met his wife of 60 years, Trudy, at LSU. They had 3 kids, numerous grand- & great-grandchildren (he lost count). Sadly, Trudy passed away after a battle with cancer. Tom joined the Air Force where he learned to fly several fighter jets and was trained to fly an F80. He loved flying, but the Korean War ended before he saw active duty. When Tom returned to civilian life he worked for Merrill Lynch in Houston. He managed several stock brokerage offices in First City Bank and the Galleria. Eventually he became the Senior Resident Manager, where he managed over 50 brokers. He was an accomplished businessman in Houston. Tom is an active member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church where he was a docent for years. Love found Tom a second time and he married his wife Ann, who was also a docent there. Ann was from Monroe, LA, where she attended Sophie Newcomb and was a Chi Omega. They share similar values, love big families and understand the importance of Louisiana food! We are so happy to have Tom in our midst. He is the very best! Grandparents Day Make sure to tell all the grandparents you know how special they are on National Grandparents Day. Remember your grandparents with a card, a phone call or better yet, a visit. At Belmont we will celebrate our grandparents on Saturday, September 17th, at 11:00 a.m. with a luncheon. We salute their contributions to family and to the community. Please RSVP with our concierge at (713) 781-1505 if you plan to attend. Her winning smile and kind manners make her a valuable Belmont team member. Jessica’s supervisor describes her as “a conscientious nurse who goes above and beyond to take care of our residents and to keep their families informed about their loved one’s status. Jessica always exercises excellent nursing judgment and bolsters our families’ confidence in nursing care when she works the floor. She is calm and collective under pressure.” With Jessica Bruno is our September Employee of heart and skill, we are fortunate to have her caring for our residents and their families. the Month Congratulations, Jessica! We are so proud of you. Circle of Friends& Neighborhood I hope everyone had a great summer! What an amazing Olympics for the United States and our residents also enjoyed watching many of the events. Simone Biles, our local Houstonian, brought home the gold and it was incredible watching her compete. We will be “traveling” as a community to Nigeria. Many of our staff members are Nigerian and we have planned many events for our residents to learn more about the culture through their senses. They will have the opportunity to taste Nigerian food, learn Nigerian dances, listen to stories about the history and rich culture, take part in making their own traditional wear. One of our pals, Deborah Adewunmi, is a fashion designer and makes traditional Nigerian clothes. She hopes to help our residents make their own traditional clothes and host a fashion show. In honor of September 11, we are planning a service of remembrance followed by a community outreach project honoring our first responders. We will be designing baskets and writing letters to the firemen and police officers who assist our community and are always putting their lives on the line for others. Lastly, Tom Lisenby is our resident spotlight for the month of September. We look forward to learning more about this well-accomplished man and hearing his great stories! Thank You, Chapelwood! Many thanks to Chapelwood United Methodist Church for partnering with Belmont Village, Hunter’s Creek since we first opened our doors. Pastor Scott Endress, Caring Ministries, has consistently provided a Wednesday bible study, spiritual books and pastoral support to a devoted group of residents. Scott said when I first met him, “many of these people have supported our church for years, it is our turn to give back to them in this new phase of their lives.” Tami Heinrich, Pastor of Connect Ministries, provides a lovely church service and communion on the first Sunday of each month. Thank you, Chapelwood, for sharing these two wonderful pastors with us! We know their time is valuable and appreciate their efforts and compassion. Health Heart Healthy Diet Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. If you are worried about heart disease, one of the most important things you can do is to start eating a heart-healthy diet. Changing your diet can help stop or even reverse heart disease. What foods are part of a heart-healthy diet? Healthy foods are ones that are high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients, such as: Fruits and vegetables Beans (including chickpeas and lentils) and whole grains (such as whole wheat, brown rice, oats, rye, bulgur, barley, quinoa, and corn). Oily fish like salmon, trout, albacore, tuna, herring, mackerel, and sardines, which contains heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids. You can also get omega-3 fats from omega-3 eggs, walnuts, flax seeds and canola oil. Foods to limit are ones that are high in: Unhealthy fats, such as saturated fats, trans fat, and cholesterol. Trans fats include shortening, partially hydrogenated vegetables oils and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Cholesterol is found in animal products, such as eggs, dairy products and meats. Salt (Sodium). You need some sodium in your diet, but too much tends to raise blood pressure. Try to limit processed foods and fast foods and eat more fresh foods. Eating foods that contain unhealthy fats can raise the LDL (bad) cholesterol in your blood. Having a high level of LDL cholesterol increases your chance of having clogged arteries (atherosclerosis) and increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. Trans fat should be avoided and raises both the level of bad cholesterol and lowers the good cholesterol in the blood.
