MARCH 2017
P.O. BOX 211, THORBURN, B0K 1W0
Principal’s Message
March will bring in a month of Transitions. On
March 8th, we will be welcoming 19 new primary students for the upcoming school year. After two snow
storms postponed our earlier scheduled registrations,
finally the new primary students and parents will join
the Skyhawk community. The grade 8 students will also
begin their transition to high school with a student and
parent orientation evening at NNEC on March 21st at
6:00 pm. Information was sent home with students last
week and an additional reminder will be sent prior to
March Break. This is an exciting time for our grade 8
students, and we hope many take advantage of the orientation evening.

Report Cards Go Home
Of all the things we would hope to achieve at
TCS, we want students to have a sense of belonging.
We acknowledge the positive things students do
through Fantastic Friday Calls, Skyhawk Awards, Book
Awards, Red Cards, and PEBS Assemblies. As a result,
we have found that you get ―what you notice. We will
be continuing our monthly assemblies in March to recognize the students and their positive contributions. At
the same time, we will continue to work on helping students to cope better with conflict and challenges that
always accompany growing and learning. Throughout,
we value and appreciate your support as parents.

THORBURN SKYHAWK REPORT
PRIMARY REGISTRATION – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8TH, 2017
We are requesting all new Primary students for next year call the school office at Thorburn Consolidated (922-3840) as soon as possible and pre-register their child for the 2017-2018 school year.
It is very important that we have the names of all Primary students now as we are beginning the
process to determine our school staff for next year. The number of teachers we have will depend upon our
school enrolment.
If you know of any neighbor or friend who has a child who will be attending Primary next year
and who does not have a child presently enrolled with us, we would appreciate you relaying this message to them. Our Primar y
Registration Day will take place on Wednesday March. 8th, 2017. Appointment times are required.
NOTE: All children must be five (5) years of age on or before December 31st, 2017,
to be enrolled in the 2017—2018 school year.
“Change for Change”- Together we can make a difference !
In March of 2013, the students and staff of TCS started a campaign called “Change for Change”. We have donated it to
organizations like: Free The Children, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the IWK, Roots for Youth, Pictou County Early Intervention, the SPCA, Pictou County Fuel Fund, the YMCA Strong Kids, Kids Help Phone, Children’s Wish Foundation,
Multicultural Society of Pictou County, Fort Mac Red Cross, Syrian Refugees, Nova Scotia Cancer Fund, Haiti, and Nepal earthquake relief. Each classroom has a can with the logo “Change for Change” on it. Students are encouraged to
make a donation of loose change at some point during the month. At the end of each month, during our PEBS assembly,
we will announce how much our school raised for the month and where the money will go. We hope that everyone will
be able to support this initiative. Thank you!
BUS CHANGES DUE TO ROAD CONDITIONS
When you are notified that the Buses are not traveling on your road in the AM due to bad
road conditions, the same will follow for the PM run, regardless of the road condition changes
during the day. If you drop your child off at school you must make arrangements to have your
child picked up from school or have a note for your child to get off the bus at a different location.
MARCH BREAK FUN
Shiver me timbers! The Museum of Industry has some fabulous pirate activities for you this March
Break. Kids, act out a play in pirate costume, or test your aim with a spring-loaded cannon. Calling “All hands on
deck!” to raise sails, flags and masts. Hunt for treasure and play pirate-themed games.

Quebec Trip Update
Our current fundraiser is Gennoe’s beans and brown bread. All orders and money are due Thursday, March 9th.
The orders will be delivered to the school on Friday, March 24th and need to be picked up that day to be delivered
to your customers. Each order costs $8.00. The order includes a 16 ounce tub of beans and a 16 ounce loaf of
brown bread.
The students have raffle tickets for our gift card basket. Each student is asked to bring in a $10.00 gift card from
somewhere in the county (Sobey's, Subway, Dollarstore, etc.) so the basket is worth $470.00 (47 students X
10.00). Each ticket costs $2.00 or 3 for $5.00. After the gift card is brought in, all tickets sold are direct profit for
each student. The draw is March 29th so all tickets are due March 28th. These are the last 2 fundraisers. A reminder the trip cost is $800.00 per student and the balance is due March 31st. Students have also been reminded
of the expectations to be eligible for this trip:
