SOFIA Nowadays Sofia is the main political, economic, cultural, and transport centre, as well as the biggest city in the country with a population of 1,220,000. It is situated in the foothills of Vitosha and Lyulin mountains, in the midpart of Western Bulgaria - the Sofia valley -which defines its role as a crossroads of international routes from Western, Central and Northern Europe, to Greece and the Middle East. Sofia is a city with numerous theatres, concert halls, galleries, cinemas, museums, churches, and other places of interest. Bulgaria is situated in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. To the north, the country borders on Romania and the Danube river; to the east, on the Black Sea; to the south, on Turkey and Greece; and to the west, on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Republic of Macedonia.
