DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS ON WAPPU?
WAPPU - THE HAPPIEST DAY FOR STUDENTS!
Wappu is a wonderful time of the year in all
people’s lives, but especially for the students!
Families kickstart the grilling season, Aalto-students pass out before midnight, Soc&
Kom students drink sparkling wine, Hankeiter
drink champagne, and those both old and
young at heart raise their glasses at Kauppatori and gaze as SHS once again has the
honor of capping Havis Amanda.
When the weather allows people usually
gather at bigger places, for example parks,
to enjoy a picnic together with friends and
family. Maybe pop a bottle of bubbly, eat
a grape or two and enjoy the biggest student event of the year. The most important
rule to remember is this; it’s always nice to
drink bubbly, but even nicer to drink it in the
company of others!
To avoid a worse fate than having no overall
at Wappu, we’ve gathered some suggestions
of places where you can find a friend or two.
It would be crazy to list them all, so we’re listing only the places where we ourselves have
been during the last few years. The truth is
that every student is likely find old or new
friends wherever they go during Wappu.
Warning! Do not feed the seagulls
,
not even as a joke.
WHAT HAP
SHS WAPPU PICNIC
This year an awesome picnic will be
organized in the Observatorieparken
at 12-17. The event is open for everyone and there will be some snacks.
Bring your overall, something to drink
and a good mood and come and enjoy Wappu the Hanken way!
HAVIS AMANDA
The tradition of student unions placing
a student cap on Havis Amanda is a
long standing student tradition that
will be arranged by SHS this year. Be
there in time to get a good view of it –
otherwise you will notice when Havis
Amanda has received her cap when
people start cheering and put their
own caps on.
THE WAPPU PARTY
A party that’s arranged in Maxine.
Here you’re sure to meet a Hankeit or
5. You can find the event on Facebook
under the name “Wappenfesten 2017”.

Bring your own food, listen to some
choir song at 9.30, and have some

At 12.00 the famous May-Day race will
be held. The race decides which of the
schools in the Helsinki region, is best at
drinking – a sport we students are very
good at.
FIRST OF MAY PARTY
Casa Nostra arranges traditional afterparty at the first of May. The party is usually quite messy, it’s after all “just” an afterparty. Remember that all Hankeits can
bring one avec, not more. The security
guards have hearts of gold but do not
tolerate people trying to sneak in.
HAVIS AMANDA
Havis Amanda, what’s that? The capping of Havis Amanada, a famous statue in central Helsinki, is an old studen tradition for all students in
Helsinki. Helsinki’s very own mermaid has been
crowned with her own student cap since 1909
every Wappu. At first, the crowning was done at
midnight and without permission, you could say
even slightly illegally. However, in 1951 the city
authorities gave official permission for the student tradition. After a while the time of the capping was moved from midnight to 18:00 and
ever since then the tradition has been a public
favorite, drawing in over 50 000 viewers on a
yearly basis.
The student unions in the metropolitan area take
turns on the capping and this year, it is SHS, the
Student Union of Hanken School of Economics,
that has the honor to continue the tradition. The
capping is preceded by cleaning the statue at
17. After the statue has been cleaned, the student cap is placed on her head at exactly 18
and the Wappu-celebration begins. The capping is impossible to miss, you’ll know when the
time has come from the cheering of the crowd
and suddenly finding yourself in a sea of white
student caps. After that, all that remains is to find
a way out of the crowd and continue on with the
night’s celebration.

En Hankeit, en Hankeit,

Dress up with your overall.
Always have your overall tightened around
your waist, or you will look like a Teknolog.
Do not put on your student cap before
18.00, or when it is on Havis Amanda’s
head.
Find the other Hanken students in the Observatorieparken. This is where the party is
at.
You may only wash your overall in the Havis Amanda fountain.
Drinking from your student cap is allowed,
sometimes even recommended if you want
a nice, yellow and smelly cap.
Drink a lot of water, and try not to confuse
this with Koskenkorva.
Do not get drunk too fast, no one likes a
partypooper who is sleaping at 16.00.
1.5
Try to avoid direct sunlight before
showering. It is recommended to take
a drink of your choice before heading
out, to alleviate the hangover.
Be in Kajsaniemi no later than 9.30 to
