Remember that all Hankeits can bring one avec, not more. The security guards have hearts of gold but do not tolerate people trying to sneak in. HAVIS AMANDA Havis Amanda, what’s that? The capping of Havis Amanada, a famous statue in central Helsinki, is an old studen tradition for all students in Helsinki. Helsinki’s very own mermaid has been crowned with her own student cap since 1909 every Wappu. At first, the crowning was done at midnight and without permission, you could say even slightly illegally. However, in 1951 the city authorities gave official permission for the student tradition. After a while the time of the capping was moved from midnight to 18:00 and ever since then the tradition has been a public favorite, drawing in over 50 000 viewers on a yearly basis. The student unions in the metropolitan area take turns on the capping and this year, it is SHS, the Student Union of Hanken School of Economics, that has the honor to continue the tradition. The capping is preceded by cleaning the statue at 17. After the statue has been cleaned, the student cap is placed on her head at exactly 18 and the Wappu-celebration begins. The capping is impossible to miss, you’ll know when the time has come from the cheering of the crowd and suddenly finding yourself in a sea of white student caps. After that, all that remains is to find a way out of the crowd and continue on with the night’s celebration. Drinking from your student cap is allowed, sometimes even recommended if you want a nice, yellow and smelly cap. Drink a lot of water, and try not to confuse this with Koskenkorva.
