Speech: What a character says.
First Person Narrator: Narrator speaks directly to the reader. The narrator uses “I”.
Dialogue: A conversation between two or more characters.
Dramatic Monologue: A type of poem/speech when a character speaks to one or more
quiet listeners.
5. Soliloquy: A speech delivered when the character is alone on stage.
6. Appearance: What a character looks like.
7. Private Thoughts: A character’s private thoughts
8. Other characters: How other characters in the story feel about them.
9. Actions: What a character does.
10. Direct Characterization: The writer tells the reader directly what a character is like.
11. Indirect Characterization: The reader has to interpret what a character is like. The
writer will not tell us directly.
12. Inference: A guess based on prior experience and observations.
13. Allusions: Reference to other works.
14. Protagonist: The main character.
15. Antagonist: The character or force the protagonist must defeat or overcome.
16. Subordinate Characters: Co-characters/add depth and complication to the plot.
17. Motivation: The reason a character does something.
18. Flat Character: A character with one or two traits.
19. Round Character: A character who has several sides/traits.
20. Dynamic Character: A character who grows or changes over time.
