It is written entirely by and for the students of this school (but parents are welcome to have a read, too!). I hope you enjoy reading what the students have to offer! Mr Patrick From the Editor-in-Chief Hello! I have really enjoyed taking responsibility for the lay-out of our paper. I hope you enjoy reading our first edition! Keep hold of it; first editions are worth lots of money… REVAMPED SPORTS HALL UNVEILED! P errott Hill recently unveiled an improved Sports Hall! It includes new changing rooms for the boys and girls, a new viewing gallery for the parents to watch matches, and a new sports store and office. We also have a projector that projects pictures in the entrance hall. ―The sports hall is brilliant,‖ said Mr Sheldon. Thank you Mr Morse, you made the right choice! The new showers in the changing rooms are fantastic. They are heated, which I think is amazing. They also have doors with locks on them. The showers and loos have funky wall colours too! We also have amazing looking lockers: they are green and better quality than the last ones. The viewing gallery has some new table tennis tables, which are great. We also have two windows: one of which looks out on to the netball court so you can watch matches when it‘s raining. This new Sports Hall is brilliant and we all love it. by Rafe Burfield Mr & Mrs by Catherine Hayton & Bella Salmons W e took the opportunity to interview Mr and Mrs Morse this term. This was a very interesting interview and I am sure you would love to know what Mr and Mrs Morse said about each other! We found lots of interesting facts. Here are some of them… Mrs Morse Milo Best Summer Term 2015 Given Names: Lottie, Emily Maiden Name: Cooper Current Surname: Morse Date of Birth: 30th July. The day Neil Armstrong walked on the moon! Favourite sport: Golf Favourite colour: It was purple but it is now blue! Favourite food: Roast chicken Favourite animal: Dog Page 2 Perrott Parrot Most embarrassing moments: Her skirt fell off when she was on stage once! She fell over in front of Mr Morse‘s study, and threw a pile of paper because she was angry and then realised she had to pick it all up! Her Life: She lived on a farm when little and had a pony, donkey, geese, chickens, goat and peacocks. She was taught by her mum who was a drama teacher. Her dad was an art teacher. Her University was Norwich School of Art. Her first teaching job was as a Gappy at an all-boys school! She met Mr Morse at this school, too! They married in 1998. Mrs Morse has taught for 20 years now—that‘s a long time! Perrott is her 3rd school. Before this she taught at Bakewell School. Mr Morse Given names: Robert John Born: 12th June 1971 Family: 1 daughter: Daisy; 1 son: Harry; 1 wife (!): Lottie. Pets: 2 dogs, Poppy and Nelly, both are black Labradors. Perrott is his 4th school and the best school he has taught at! His Life Loves history. In his youth he loved Maths, Geography and Games. His favourite sports are cricket and rugby. He met Mrs Morse as a teacher when they worked at the same school. In the holidays he reads, eats, surfs, runs, swims and does crosswords. Children spur him on: every time they achieve things he gets inspired. If Mr Morse could change anything he might change the car park a bit, but nothing big. couldn‘t believe his eyes. He nearly shot one of the runners in frustration! This is what Milo Best, the editor of this paper, had to say about the ice cream, ‗There were so many flavours, it was awesome. I tried them all had permanent brain-freeze.‘ Lots of prizes were handed out on Sports Day. Most importantly, the winner of the house trophy was Quantocks! They rarely win on Sports Day, but this year was an exception. Thanks to Mr Sheldon & Miss White for organizing a fun-filled day for the whole school. Mr and Mrs Morse are off to start a new life at Aysgarth School this September. Thank you, Mr and Mr Morse, for everything you have done at Perrott Hill and good luck at your new school! Ben James said, ‗It was like trying to run on ice!‘ Mr. Kane was the Starting Marshal, and he VIDEO GAMES Perrott Parrot Page 3 Mario Kart 8 by Milo Best I n the first issue I will be looking at three prime Nintendo video games of 2014 and 2015. My first review, to start the ball rolling, is Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U. I‘ve been a huge fan of the Mario Kart series ever since the original came out on the SNES. Mario Kart 8 has some brilliant new tracks and stunning visuals. Classic racecourses have been revamped so they incorporate new features like anti-gravity and flight. Anti-gravity has added whole new opportunities to the game, like new shortcuts and many interesting tracks. It has changed competitive play completely. Furthermore there are no longer set karts for characters; instead there are new karts and gliders and you are allowed to mix and match to find the perfect combo to drive your way to victory. There are four engine sizes, yes, I said four! 200 cc came out earlier this year via DLC (downloadable content), along with two new cups, 3 new characters and brand new karts and tracks. Competitive and casual play is a lot more interesting. I highly recommend Mario Kart 8. Super Smash Bros. 4 by Milo Best S uper Smash Bros. is acclaimed as one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time, ever since the original came out on the Nintendo 64. It has grown since the release of SSB4 for the Nintendo 3DS; on the Wii U the game has got better and better with new characters, combos and stages. It is not just any old button smasher, but a game of skill and knowledge that will challenge all. With over 30 characters to play with and a brilliant online mode you have every opportunity to hone your skills against others. Two new characters have been added to the choice availa- ble via extra DLC: Mewtwo (from the Pokémon games) and Lucas (from the Earthbound series). They both appeared in previous SSB games. SSB4 has amazing looks and is a joy to play. The battle stages are a diverse collection and lend a nod to real Nintendo classics. Altogether, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS is a great game to add to your collection. Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire by Milo Best A nother game that has been extremely successful for Nintendo is Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. In the game you begin as a ten-year-old boy or girl who's travelling through the world of Hoenn. You battle against an evil organisation using your Pokémon and save the world from impending natural doom. In the brilliant postgame content (the Delta episode), you will meet brilliant people, go to wonderful places and defeat all eight gym leaders (the bosses in the games). After that you will journey to the Elite Four and become Champion of the Region. There are many new features like the DexNav, which helps you catch the perfect Pokémon either for battling or breeding. The breeding mechanic in this game is much better than previous versions. Now you can breed for egg moves, natures, abilities and stats. It is no longer a complicated series of calculations, thus making it easy for any Pokémon player, veteran or beginner. The new game altogether is brilliant, with a great story line and amazing features. This game is an instant classic for Nintendo. Perrott Parrot VIDEO GAMES Page 4 Terraria by Ben Sheldon & Drake Hendrickson T erraria is a sandbox game. You fight, mine, build and go on adventures in your world. You progress through the game by defeating monsters and bosses, gaining weapons, armour and accessories, and completing challenges. If you progress through enough events you can complete the game. Terraria is one of the most talked-about games at Perrott Hill. In the game you get lots of different environments, called ‗biomes‘, such as: Desert Snow Forest Jungle Hell Ocean There are many ‗mobs‘ and ‗bosses‘ that your player can fight. Terraria is a truly great game. We give it 8/10, and recommend it to you now! It is a creative experience, because it allows you to adventure and understand the world around you. Pros: Terraria has no rules so you can do whatever you want (sort of). Cons: It is only 2D and restrictions do apply. Splatoon by Milo Best S platoon, the most hyped Nintendo game of 2015, is utterly fabulous and shamone! It‘s fun and so inkcredibly addictive. In the game you are an inkling and a squid. You will fight monsters and evil bosses whilst gaining levels and ranking up, all using Paint, yeah Paint! It sounds weird but it works really well. It will bring new flavour and colour to your mind. It is fluid and smooth, letting you combine weapons like rollers or brushes with your outfit. As a nerd I was instantly excited. A game with paint coming to stores. It was awesome. Each time more news was released I was so excited I couldn‘t sleep! Sadly I couldn‘t get the game at the time of release. There are lots of videos and reviews online, though: check them out. It is great to see the game in action, especially with all the paint. It‘s awesome. Splatoon is utterly shamone; it has style, character and is brilliant all round. I can‘t wait to get it with my Wii U! It is seriously the HYPE. In conclusion, Splatoon is sooooo gooood, it will rock your world. Perrott Parrot ELECTION SPECIAL Page 5 The Day I Met David Cameron by Rafe Burfield J ust before Election Day earlier this year, David Cameron came to Nortonsub-Hamdon (see pic, right)! If you don‘t know, I live in that village. I was in the swimming pool at the time, but my mum went to the shop and she bumped into former Liberal Democrat politician, Paddy Ashdown. He told her that David Cameron was coming to my village. So we quickly got dried and went outside to see him! He came in his Jaguar and a tour bus came with him – it is called ‗The Battle Bus‘. As you might have guessed, I am a big fan of the Conservative Party and I was really happy that they won in both the national election and the school election. Perrott Hill General Election by Bella Salmons and had some very good points. Representing the Green Party was James Lloyd-Elliot. James gave a good speech and put across some good points. I liked his plan to give each house some land for an allotment so everyone could grow and eat vegetables. Representing Labour was Hatty Tremlett. Hatty made a great speech and persuaded quite a few people to vote for her. Representing Liberal Democrats was Danny Fisher. He was very funny and got the crowd laughing - he must get some Brownie points for that! T he Perrott Hill Election took place on Thursday 7th May 2015 at approximately 11.00. Eight candidates stood in the election and there were some fabulous speeches. These were the Candidates: Representing the Conservative party was Connie Doxat. Connie gave a very persuasive speech Representing the Monster Raving Loony Party was Ben Mallinson. Ben got everyone in the room laughing, even the teachers! He put across some hilarious points and he must have won himself a lot of votes! Representing the Scottish National Party was James Farquharson. He put some very important points across about nuclear weapons, but I was disappointed that he didn‘t do his speech in a Scottish accent! Representing TUSC was Paul Edwards. Paul did a very persuasive speech and was very funny! And last but not least: Mima Baring stood for UKIP. She loves the United Kingdom and was very persuasive! The results of the election were announced on the following day. The winner was Connie Doxat (Conservative), who is now our School MP! Good luck to Connie in the coming 5 years. Maybe she‘ll come back and visit to give a speech as MP! PLAY REVIEWS Perrott Parrot Page 6 Year 4 Play: Ye-ha! by Laura Edwards Y ear 4 put on a play called ‗Ye-ha!‘ It was about a boy becoming sheriff but he was just a cook, so a cowgirl named Billy-Jo Brisket came to the town and helped the boy. There was a no-good gang running wild in the town and Billy-Jo (with the help of a boy named Wilbur) had to defeat the mayor and the gang (they were all bad) to save the town. In the end they defeated the mayor and the gang, and Billy-Jo became the sheriff and Wilbur became the mayor! I was an Indian chief named Big Chief Walking Weasel. It was a musical so there were lots of songs. Ian (the school caretaker) made us a fantastic set with lots of little details. My favourite part of the play was when the gang pulled their trousers down. Everyone laughed! There were lots of funny moments, and we really enjoyed it. Year 6 Play: Captain Black Boot’s island by Paul Edwards T his was a play of hidden treasure, confusion en masse and a woman with nine children. It was about Captain Blackboot making a treasure map with rhyming clues, but no treasure at the end of it! He sent out three of these treasure maps in a bottle by sea. They were found by three very different people: 1. Three children called Sally, Victoria and James 2. Captain Blackboot‘s arch enemy: Captain Bloodshot and his crew. 3. Captain Blackboot‘s wife, Victoria, and all her nine children! The three children arrived first and went through the clues, but when they got to the end they found no treasure. They then complained to the Captain that there was no treasure, but all of a sudden, out of nowhere, Victoria turned up and said that she had hit something hard in the sand. It was treasure! Unfortunately, the pirates later turned up and found the treasure whilst Captain Blackboot was gone. Then, if that wasn‘t enough, Captain Blackboot‘s wife turned up! Captain Blackboot sent her and her children on a wild goose chase around the island. Out of the darkness Captain Bloodshot appeared in front of Captain Blackboot and a fight broke out! Whilst the fight was in full-swing Captain Blackboot‘s wife came along. They got captured in the heat of battle by the pirates but luckily Captain Blackboot scared the pirates away with the help of ‗the friendly people‘. It all ended happily ever after. HELP SECTION Perrott Parrot Page 7 Being Dyslexic by Max Mason ally fun day). I knew I was dyslexic when I was about 7 years old. When I was at my old school some of the teachers thought I was just lazy and thick, and that I simply couldn‘t be bothered to work. B eing dyslexic is very hard, as I know. I wake up every morning thinking about how hard the day will be and dread going to school (even if it is going to be a re- When I came to Perrott Hill I started Learning Support and they noticed straight away that there was something wrong. They sent me off to be tested and I found out I was dyslexic. Being dyslexic does mean you have to work harder than everyone else and you have to give up some of your free time to work. Even though dyslexic people find things more difficult than others they can go far in life. Take Albert Einstein, for example. He was dyslexic and he yet he became a famous scientist everyone has heard of! Another successful dyslexic person was the creator of Apple computers: Steve Jobs. He created the most powerful phone in the world! This just proves that dyslexic people can go far in life; often we are more practical, and see things ‘differently‘ to others. Being dyslexic doesn‘t have to be terrible these days. If you are dyslexic then don‘t get upset; try to see it as a good thing. Keep calm and DON‘T compare yourself to others. This is what reading can look like through the eyes of someone who has dyslexia. Advice Corner by Bonnie Kawar Making friends T o make friends you need to be confident! Go and say hello! Trust me it will be fine. If you are unique (and everyone is) you will find someone like you in every school and they will be your friend for sure. To make friends you need to be kind and polite. Making friends sometimes seems hard but it‘s not. People usually complicate it when it‘s really simple. Keeping friends Imagine someone who is your friend has just said or done something really mean. What should you do? Well, I would just ignore them at first. Maybe they‘ll feel bad and apologise. Then I would ask them how they think that mean thing made me feel? If nothing works I might go and ask an adult for advice. It could be a teacher, but I like talking to my mum. Just remember two wrongs don’t make a right. Do you have a friendship problem? Write to me at the newspaper and I‘ll try and write back. BOOK REVIEWS Perrott Parrot Page 8 Moon Bear by Marcia Kennard T here is a problem in the woods. A family has to be moved because the army have to build a road to get to the mountains. It is very different up in the mountains and is also very un-protected because there are no trees. Tam was helping his father plant rice when one of the secret army bombs blew up and his father died. Tam has to be sent to the city to gain their family‘s money and health back. I love this book because there‘s always a mystery for Tam to solve . There‘s always something that wants to make you read on and at the end you just wish that there was more of the book! Moon Bear is an amazing book and I recommend it to you immediately. The Roman Mysteries by Catherine Hayton T he Roman Mysteries is a great series of books. I really recommend them to you if you are in Years 4, 5 or 6. Although they are a fiction series, they involve loads of cool facts about the Roman times! Each of the books involves puzzles and mysteries and even romance, which I really like. If you do not get the chance to buy these books then don‘t worry because you can find the series in the school library. The books follow 4 children: a Roman girl called Flavia and her African slave girl called Nubia; a Jew/ Christian called Jonathan, and a mute -beggar-boy called Lupus. Another plus in these series is that they can improve your Latin since there is a Latin dictionary in the back! Books 2 and 3 are all about Mount Vesuvius erupting, 2 being when it erupted and 3 being how they handled it. My favourite book is the Twelve Tasks of Flavia Gemina. It‘s based on Hercule‘s 12 labours and is so much fun! Clarice Bean by Ellie Duval Author: Lauren Child. Main Story line: Clarice Bean is a school girl who writes about her life. What did you like about the book? The cover looks really enticing and when you get to read it it‘s fantastic. How To Train Your Dragon by Paul Edwards H ow To Train Your Dragon is a wonderful read with danger, action and lots of humour. It tells the life story of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock, the son of Stoick the Vast, the King of a Viking tribe called the Berkians. Hiccup goes on the Viking training program to try and follow in his father‘s footsteps but things don‘t quite go to plan! I would recommend this book to anyone between the ages of 5-13. I would also recommend reading the whole series because the books just keep getting better and better. How could the book be improved? More jokes, because the best books have loads of jokes. It‘s a great book but a little serious. Perrott Parrot TEACHERS’ REPORTS Mr Eales House Points Class Average Year 26 2 1,006 ICT Grade Summer 2015 Age D5 Grade Page 9 30-ish yrs C3 Mr Eales has worked hard this term. To his credit Mr Eales persevered well with his in-class nose picking. He also tried really hard to make the lighting and sound look good in the Year 8 Play; I watched him moving all the knobs around during rehearsals and he did not make it look easy. In the boarding house he has a great sense of humour and knows how to have fun. I wish him the very best of luck in Switzerland next year! Milo Best Miss O’Neill House Points Class Average Games Year 22 651 500 Summer 2015 Age Grade B4 Grade 25-ish yrs A1 Miss O’Neill has worked outstandingly over the past year. She got really fast at running, and broke the record for the number of lost rounders balls! To improve on this year she could try a little harder in the swimming pool; swimming full lengths without armbands will make her a better swimmer. Miss O’Neill should be proud of her achievements this year, and I wish her good luck for next year. Oliver Cox Mr Barr House Points Class Average Music Year 47 3,024 25 Grade Summer 2015 Age B2 Grade 50-ish yrs A1 This year Mr Barr organ-ised the choir trip to Prague, only narrowly escaping his glasses exploding from the year 6’s high notes. I am disappointed to report that roughly five music pupils were left at every music-related trip he has run this year. He must try harder to ensure these mistakes are not repeated. Mr Barr tried to create a Virtual Reality-compatible keyboard, although most attempts caused power cuts in North Perrott and massive hair loss. This fish is oddly shaped (see picture). As you know, it contains a large bump in its belly; this fish is the ‗golf-fish‘. You may also wonder how this strange shape appeared on the side of this fish! I‘m going to put these fears to rest with this rather odd, but true, story… ...One day Mr Morse was practising his putting. However, he picked the wrong club and took a rather large swing that hit the ball all the way over the school and into the Rose Garden. He chased after his ball only to find that he had finally got a hole in one! In a ‗golf fish‘...
