For their semester group project, students in Professor Christopher Axtell's Advanced Business Communications class, BUAD 301, provided the campus VIP's with proposals, plans, and fully developed marketing packages for two upcoming centers on the campus. Professor Axtell said, "I've given this client-based project before, and the students really respond to it. They know something will come out of the winning designs, and I think they feel it is more 'real' to pitch to an actual end-user with quirks, budgets, and preferences rather than to some imaginary client I make up and what I just decree from the lectern to be the one true way to write a proposal. It's a legit job with actual results." One class was charged with developing a center that would address the needs of four sections of the student population: veterans, adults returning to education, women, and the LGBT community. The business students faced the challenge of proposing a vision for merging services to these four groups in one shared space and pool of resources. Professor Axtell's other class was solicited for proposals for a new learning center to bolster student performance and answer the CSU systemwide call for moving students successfully through their education with less delay and better takeaway for their time and money. The process started in the first weeks of the semester with a classroom visit by the clients: Dean of the Irvine Campus, Susan Cooper; Associate Dean, Van Muse; Assistant Dean, Marsha Daughetee; and Student Affairs Coordinator, Rob Flores. The students heard their clients' needs and went to work. They assessed the goals and parameters of the task, divided the labor, navigated the tricky waters of collaborative work, designed their documents and made their materials: postcards, magazine ads, brochures, press releases, posters, and an online presence for the two new centers. The materials were presented in . a special joint session of the two classes in the Irvine campus's all-purpose room. Each donned their sharpest threads, manned their table, flashed their smiles, and pitched their visions to the clients and looky-loos. Their prize? A coveted business card from the clients, and perhaps their vision made real when these centers open in the near future. "It was a fun experience....it was amazing," said Pre-Business sophomore Sky Nguyen. page 2 Career Center Corner Sales Pitch competition Looking for a job?
