Volunteer Update Tim

At Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco, our compass always
points home.
We build homes so families have safe, healthy places to raise their
children, and can build a nest egg to ensure their families’ future. And
we repair homes and revitalize communities so families can age in
place, maintain homeownership – their most important economic asset
– and leave a legacy of economic stability for future generations. The
home is always the center of what we do. We are proud of our progress
in creating and maintaining homeownership opportunities in 2015.
Our hard work at Habitat Terrace in San Francisco’s Ocean View
neighborhood and at Mt. Burdell Place in Novato continues. These
38 homes provide first-time homeowners with reasonable mortgages
and an opportunity to build equity and save for the future.
hoods: East Palo Alto and the Bayview. By offering critical home repairs
we are addressing safety, accessibility, and health issues for long-time
senior homeowners. These home repairs help low-income families
protect their largest investment so they can avoid displacement and
pass on their home to future generations. This program also includes
renovations of community facilities and beautification of parks, thereby
transforming neighborhoods into vibrant places to grow and thrive.
We couldn’t do all of this without the support of our 7,000 volunteers
who give freely of their time to help us build and repair homes across
our tri-county region.
And we certainly couldn’t do any of this without YOU! Thank you for
believing and investing in your communities. Together, we are protecting
the very fabric of the incredible region we all call home. Your support of
your neighbors charts a solid course for a better Bay Area.
We also continue to map out future milestones, most recently by
securing our investment on the Peninsula. We’ll soon be building
20 affordable condominiums in the heart of downtown Redwood City.
With gratitude,
This past year, Habitat Greater San Francisco made giant strides in our
Neighborhood Revitalization efforts, which are focused in two neighbor-

Whether it’s home repairs, homebuilding or working in our
office or at our ReStore discount home improvement store,
volunteers drive what we do and they’re the bread-and-butter
of our Neighborhood Revitalization efforts.

Tim started volunteering with Habitat Greater San Francisco in 1997. He’s contributed over 1000 volunteer hours
building new homes throughout the years, swinging hammers, digging post holes and doing whatever is required to
help families attain the dream of homeownership. This year, Tim took three days off of work to volunteer with our
Neighborhood Revitalization program, building a new fence and planter boxes, and landscaping a yard for homeowner Jaqueline who was grateful for Tim and all the volunteers who helped her maintain the home she loves.
It’s in my DNA. It just makes sense in the Bay Area
and our own community. The community projects are
so inspiring. The impact it has. That’s Habitat in the
neighborhood. That’s why I volunteer.

As difficult as it was for us, with good jobs, to buy
our first house in the SF Bay Area, I knew how
much more difficult it would be for many others.
I wanted to “pass along” my good fortune and help
people get into comfortable, safe, decent housing.
Cathy has been a volunteer with Habitat Greater San Francisco for 15 years, helping everywhere from construction
sites to Vietnam on a Global Village trip. She is a committed volunteer who believes everyone deserves decent
housing. While on site, she has heard future Habitat neighbors share how crowded their living arrangements are
and how they simply want a comfortable place for their children to sleep and study. It has been an honor for Cathy
to build alongside future homeowners and this commitment to decent housing is why Cathy continues to volunteer.
You can map the impact of Habitat Greater San Francisco’s Neighborhood Revitalization program on the following pages.

Expenses not reflected in the above totals include $5,396,540 spent on construction costs for four sites located in
Novato, Redwood City and two in San Francisco. These expenses will be reflected in our P&L within the year
that Habitat sells the 88 homes to qualified families.
The financial data reported above is summarized based on the audit performed by Armanino, LLP.
Copies of the audit report are available at www.habitatgsf.org/finance.
For the fifth consecutive year, Habitat
Greater San Francisco was designated
Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four
stars for our financial stewardship, transparency and accountability. Only
6% of charities rated have received at least five consecutive 4-star ratings.

Neighborhood
our Neighborhood Revitalization program, Habitat Greater San
Revitalization Through
Francisco seeks to help long-time homeowners maintain their homes, to
preserve what’s likely their largest asset and to protect their families for
future generations. Through home repairs, we address safety issues like
dilapidated staircases and broken windows so long-time homeowners can
age in place. And we address aesthetic issues that improve a home’s value.
We also help maintain parks and community gardens and we renovate
and restore community facilities so that neighborhoods can take full
advantage of their resources.
Yolanda
Giving back has always been a part of Yolanda’s ethos. As a nurse for the county, Yolanda started a food program for San Francisco’s
sobering center. She helped raise her niece and nephew who live next door, after their mother died. And she opens her door most days
to her whole community to fill to-go boxes with her specialties: Coca-Cola braised ribs, apple-pie in a skillet, chicken wings and
a famous 7-Up bundt cake.
But when a flood badly damaged the home she has lived in for decades, her life, and those of all the people she helps every day,
was disrupted. She couldn’t host her community for daily meals, watch her grandkids or be close enough to her niece and nephew
for them to stop by for love and support. Then Yolanda applied for a home repair through our Neighborhood Revitalization program.
The Habitat team rebuilt the crumbling back exterior wall to Yolanda’s house, fixed neglected electrical wires and added a new
staircase leading to her back door. For the first-time, Yolanda had a second exit in case of emergencies. After these repairs were
completed, Yolanda was able to move back in – and the first thing she did was start cooking again for everyone.

Curtis
I don’t give expecting to get. I do it because it’s in my heart to give. But then
when you’re blessed with Habitat…it puts everything in perspective.
It makes me want to be part of the family…and share my love. –Yolanda
Curtis has lived in his home since 1965. His two daughters and granddaughter live
next door. Curtis has great pride in his home, but the addition on his back porch
was in disrepair and crumbling. On a fixed income, he couldn’t afford critical
repairs to preserve his home and his safety. Neighborhood Revitalization volunteers
dismantled the addition and built a new deck, providing Curtis with another safe
exit in case of emergencies. Before Habitat did the repair, “there was no door
to walk out of,” Curtis said. Today, Curtis sits outside on his new deck daily and
hosts his family for barbecues. The work helped him keep his family together
while preserving his largest asset, protecting his family for many generations.
Jacqueline
24
The last few years have been hard for Jacqueline. Her son, who was shot in a drive-by shooting, lives in a skilled nursing facility and
she visits and cares for him daily. And recently, her devoted husband passed away from cancer. The last thing on her mind has been
the maintenance of the home they purchased in East Palo Alto 41 years ago. She lamented that her once beautiful home looked like a
“haunted house.”
We’ve focused on two neighborhoods,
East Palo Alto and the Bayview, where
there is a high concentration of long-time
homeowners, and a high percentage who
can’t afford to invest in the repairs that
older homes demand.
My house looks absolutely beautiful again. My neighbors and family
members have said how great it looks. Plus Habitat did repairs and
improvements at four other houses near mine, which means the whole
neighborhood looks and feels better again. –Jacqueline

When we concentrate our
improvements in a neighborhood –
homebuilding, home repairs, park
and garden events and community
facility renovations – whole
communities can benefit.
This September, Jacqueline’s home was restored to its original glory. Habitat Greater San Francisco volunteers built a new fence
and planter boxes, mulched the yard, and removed overgrown bushes. Other partner nonprofits completed minor interior repairs and
planted low-maintenance trees. Jacqueline said she felt relieved that while she was taking care of her son, there were neighbors and
volunteers willing to take care of her. “All I can say is thank the Lord,” Jacqueline says. “I only wish my husband was here to see it.”
For months, Versie was confined to her East Palo Alto home due to health issues
and unsafe structures around her home. Versie lacked the financial means to
complete the critical repairs needed to make her home safe and accessible.
Volunteers built a new deck, removed uneven carpet, and completed minor
kitchen repairs to make her home functional again.
These may sound like small repairs, but for Versie and her daughter Karen, the
repairs meant so much. Since their partnership with Habitat, they no longer
need to take Vitamin D supplements since they can sit outside on the porch in
the beautiful sunshine. And Versie’s home is again the meeting place for the
family since she can safely cook in her kitchen. She is happy since “the kids
are all here; everybody is together.”
