WEST SLAVIC STUDIES

WE
WEST SLAVIC
STUDIES
FIRST-CYCLE
UNIVERSITY STUDY
PROGRAMME
This programme is designed according to the Bologna Declaration and lasts three years (180
ECTS credit points).
The programme represents a
synthesis of three combined
programmes in West Slavic languages that have been run at the
Ljubljana’s Faculty of Arts since
2004. Upon enrolling, students
chose a primary combination of
two languages (Polish + Czech
or Polish + Slovak) and spend
the next three years familiarising
themselves with these languages
extensively through practical
exercises and the study of the
linguistics and literary science
of both languages. While the
basic content structure of the
programme is similar to the combined programmes of the languages in question, it is additionally
expanded by a range of mandatory and elective courses in linguistics, literary science, history,
geography, and ethnology of the
West Slavic space.
This programme is designed according to the principles of the
study of modern languages, which
not only emphasise an in-depth
linguistic, literary, and cultural
knowledge, but also aim to provide knowledge of contemporary
philosophical currents and trends
in thought. During the programme, students familiarise themselves with comprehensive literary
and cultural traditions and with
their development in the broader
European context, simultaneously highlighting the connections
with Slovene space and historical consciousness. The linguistic part of the study programme
provides students with a thorough
knowledge of all language levels,
also taking into account the principles of applied linguistics in order to prepare them for all types
of translation. The theoretical
foundations acquired here enable
students to pursue further study
at the second-cycle level.

Graduates of the study programme in West Slavic Studies can
pursue careers in various fields of
the economy, at public and governmental services, and at cultural
institutions that maintain contacts with Central European Slavic
centres, therefore becoming an
integral part in the exchange of
goods, services, and knowledge.
The bustling economic and cultural exchange and partnerships
among the newly joined countries of the European Union assign
those countries’ individual languages a new status in the processes of European integration
and increase the need for mutual
knowledge and communication.
It was exactly this new social
dynamic of the Central European integration that influenced
the dual-level structure of the
programme; after completing the
first-cycle study, graduates are
eligible for employment in the
fields of interlinguistic mediation and communication. Their
educational profile is based on a
synthesis of the existing programmes in West Slavic languages and
literatures. At the same time, they
also possess an excellent foundation for further study.
Upon successful completion of
study, students acquire the academic title of diplomirana zahodnoslavistka (UN) / diplomirani zahodnoslavist (UN).*
