The Dellridge Poets
As the Residents of Dellridge
counted down, the Dellridge New
Year’s Eve ball was dropped. Johnny
Jake was on hand to entertain and of
course sing Auld Lange Sine to
welcome in the New Year.
Destination Philippines
The residents of Dellridge
experienced the sights, sounds, and
tastes of the Philippines all from the
comfort of their chairs. Recreation
began their Destination.... programs for
the new year on January 08. Traditional
music was played, a video tour of the
Philippines was presented and the
residents got to taste Turon, a delicious
treat from the Philippines. Next stop in
our Destination series is China.

Get Up to Speed on NASCAR
Once a sport that began on
country back roads, NASCAR has hit
the fast lane in terms of popularity.
NASCAR, which stands for National
Association for Stock Car Auto
Racing, is now the No. 1 spectator
sport in the country and a business
that earns billions of dollars
each year.
Stock car racing traces its history
back to the days of Prohibition, when
drivers who ran moonshine secretly
transported their illegal product using
cars they had modified to increase
not only cargo space, but also speed
in order to outrun police. When
Prohibition ended, many drivers—
especially those in the rural South—
continued racing for profit
and entertainment.
Because rules varied and crooked
race organizers often cheated
drivers out of their winnings, there
was a growing need for an
organization to oversee these races.
In 1947, Bill France Sr., a former driver
and race promoter in Daytona
Beach, Fla., gathered the racing
community to discuss the idea of a
governing body, and NASCAR was
born a year later. Its first sanctioned
race was held Feb. 15, 1948.
NASCAR’s biggest race is the
Daytona 500, which begins the ninemonth racing season each February.
There are plenty of foods with
heart health benefits. Find out why
health experts advise filling up on
these options:
Beans, lentils and chickpeas.
Packed with protein—but without the
cholesterol that comes with animal
sources—these legumes are a key
component of a heart-healthy diet and
can help control blood sugar. These
high-fiber foods also prevent bad
cholesterol from being absorbed by
the body.
Yogurt. High in potassium, yogurt and
other dairy products can help reduce
high blood pressure. But the probiotics
in yogurt could have an added benefit
for your heart: By fighting “unfriendly”
bacteria in the mouth, yogurt may
protect against gum disease, which
can raise your risk for heart disease.
Grapes and raisins. Thanks to the
presence of resveratrol, which can
prevent blood clotting as well as lower
cholesterol and blood pressure, red
grapes are a popular choice on
heart-healthy menus. Both red and
white grapes contain polyphenols that
can prevent artherosclerosis (hardening
of the arteries), and raisins can fight
inflammation and bacteria that cause
gum disease.
Avocados. The healthy
monounsaturated fats in this creamy
fruit help reduce bad cholesterol, and
anti-inflammatory properties reduce the
risk of developing artherosclerosis. An
abundance of antioxidants and
potassium make avocado a welcome
addition to meals.
