Vocabulary: 2-Dimensional Shapes
Polygon: Made up of straight line segments called sides. Every side meets exactly one other
side at a corner or angle, so a polygon is a closed figure.
A polygon always has the same
number of angles as sides.
Polygons are named based on common attributes.
Triangle: A three-sided polygon with three
angles.
Quadrilateral: A four-sided polygon with four
angles.
Pentagon: A five-sided polygon with five
angles.
Hexagon: A six-sided polygon with six angles.
Examples of Different Types of Quadrilaterals
Trapezoid: A quadrilateral which has at least one pair of parallel sides.
Parallelogram: A quadrilateral which has two pairs of parallel sides.
Rhombus: A parallelogram with sides that are
all the same length.
Rectangle: A parallelogram with four square
corners.
Square: A special rectangle with sides that are all the same length.
