THE CHURCHMOUSE Windsor Presbyterian Church December 2015 To the Flock . . . It is easy to lose sight of the meaning of this season as the stores around us advertise. Advent calendars help us enjoy 24 sweet treats or receive 24 presents. As followers of Jesus of Nazareth, however, Advent is the time when we remember and tell our story, the story of a people groaning for help, searching for a savior. We tell the story of the incarnation—how God came to save the people by taking on human form, entering into the world of mortals as a baby. This is the beautiful story of the season. The angels announced to the shepherds that here and now, the king of all creation would be entering into the world, and they would find him in a lowly feeding trough. We sing carols. We read the prophets. We wait. And then we light candles and celebrate the birth of the Savior. It is sweet and lovely. We cherish the traditions around Christmas. Advent is not only the time when we celebrate the first coming of Jesus, but it is a time to look toward the second coming of Jesus as well, that “great and terrible day” that announces the ultimate end of the world as we know it and full coming in glory of the mercy of God. Evil does not get the last word. God’s redemption and salvation are the subject of the final chapter of history. During these four weeks leading up to Christmas, we pay special attention to the rumors of redemption breaking through. May you be surprised this Advent by glimpses of God’s mercy, love and redemption breaking in around you. Advent Devotionals If you are looking for a good devotion for the four weeks of Advent, the worship team suggests d365.org. You may subscribe to receive daily emails to enjoy this simple and beautiful devotion daily. The devotions are structured to help us pause (and orient ourselves to the obedient life), listen (to God’s Word), think (alongside other thoughtful Christians), pray (a simple prayer), and go (challenged to live God’s Word). The devotions are not preachy and are accompanied by beautiful music, so turn up your speakers and spend a few moments re-centering yourself on what is important in this season. The ChurchMouse Page 6 Special Events A Special Celebration On November 15, we celebrated a momentous day in the life of our congregation, the Cottage Grove congregation, the Presbytery, the First Presbyterian Arabic Fellowship, the Sudanese community in Des Moines, and the Kachu family, when Ekram was ordained as an elder and commissioned to be the originating pastor of her congregation. As I looked around the sanctuary that day, it was like seeing a preview of God’s kingdom. There was a beautiful and unlikely mixture of people in the pews—people from at least 18 Presbyterian congregations, 2 professors from Dubuque, and a representative from General Assembly. Those gathered were young and old, light-skinned and dark-skinned, rich and poor, Christians and Muslims. There were members of tribes who sat together, celebrated and ate together, who could not do that in Sudan, where their tribes are involved in armed conflicts with each other. It was an astounding gathering—a foretaste of the Kingdom of God, when people come from every nation to feast together. I am so proud of our congregation for supporting Ekram and her congregation. I was amazed that 20 of you showed up and stayed to the end of the 3-hour worship service. Some of you came and sampled strange and wonderful dishes at the feast afterward. Some of you thought you would never get your car out of the parking lot! It was a day full of God’s blessing. Thank you, WPC, for your part in making it happen! (Shamaine) Laying on of hands Photos courtesy of Dr. Madsen Ekram with the Rev. Dr. David B. Madsen from Cottage Grove Church Christmas Caroling On Friday, December 4, Windsor Heights will be hosting a cocktail party at their community center. They have invited representatives from Windsor Presbyterian, Lutheran and Methodist churches to provide some type of entertainment. We will be singing Christmas carols for about 15 minutes. If you would like to represent our beautiful church, contact Sue Cooper or sign up in Ward Hall. Be there wearing something festive and ready to sing by 7:30 PM. Let’s have a big turn-out to show everyone what a great congregation we have! Page 7 December 2015 Meet Our New Members . . . Laura Ward Randi Perez On October 4 eight new members joined the flock here at Windsor, and they came in on fire for Christ. One of these is Laura Ward, daughter of the late Rev. Hume Ward and Alice Ward. Laura was raised at Windsor as her father was pastor here for 33 years. She lived right next door, so the church was definitely her second home. When Dick Woods and Curt Weatherby went to Randi’s door, she immediately had a very good feeling. When she asked how many people attended our church, she was in! Laura studied at Grandview and Drake. A theater major, she changed her major to religion when folks were concerned that she would struggle to find work in that field. She worked in the legislature for 13 years, mostly as a recording clerk. Currently she is a massage therapist with her own business. Be sure to talk with her sometime about that. Randi has a long history with the Christian Church in Murray, Iowa, where her grandfather, OE Richardson was a minister for many years. After meeting Sue, Randi discovered that she knew Sue’s mom, Peggy Paschall, from her childhood in Murray. Peggy is best friends with Randi’s Aunt Joyce and also knows Randi’s mom. In fact, Ross Paschall grew up with Randi’s uncle and his brothers. Laura is a delight to have in our classes, because she has an inquiring mind and doesn’t mind asking important questions. Laura has a lovely little Sheltie named Bravo, whom she loves very much. Many longtime members will remember Laura’s sister, Lin. Laura is looking forward to spending the holiday with her. Welcome, Laura! We are glad you are here. Curt Weatherby Curt is a familiar face around Windsor. He graduated from East High School in 1978. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Drake University in 1984. He has been a resident of Windsor Heights for 30 years. Curt’s interests are baking, cooking, and doing dishes (seriously). Curt especially loves serving Windsor Presbyterian Church. And he is especially good at that! Curt has family ties to WPC. His aunt, Ann Beeson, is a long-time member. Thanks, Curt, for all your hard work! Page 8 Sue Cooper had the utmost pleasure of getting to know Randi for this interview. She is so happy Randi joined this beautiful church and treasures their friendship. Randi’s education was at the University of Chicago and the University of Maryland through the United States Army, where her husband was stationed in Germany. A Political Science degree was what she pursued, although her true passion was technology. Returning home, she was a political activist, then took a job recruiting technical sales people to see what jobs might be fun in Iowa. After selling IBM Business Computers for a couple of years, she went back to recruiting engineers and has done that for the past 18 years. She now runs a part-time recruiting business (LLC) out of her home. Randi has been a resident of Windsor Heights for 24 years. She has been semi-retired since May of 2013. She is active in the community, loves her church, and goes to the YMCA daily. She is close to her family with a wonderful son, 2 sisters, a brother, and a great mom who plays the organ and sings at the Christian Church in Osceola. Her grandmother on her mother’s side had 11 brothers and sisters, so Randi feels like she is related to most of the people in Iowa. She is serious about the Windsor Heights Presbyterian Church being her church family. Randi, WPC is excited to have you as a member of the family! December 2015 . . . More new members! Lex Cochrane Ann and Don Beeson Lex Cochrane grew up in Fort Dodge, IA, where she was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church. She also learned about Presbyterianism during summer visits to her grandmother in Clarkson, NE. Ann and Don have five children between them and nine grandchildren, along with their kitty, Mia. They were married at Windsor Presbyterian Church 36 years ago by Reverend Hume Ward. Ann is a long-time member. Both Ann and Don are retired. Lex’s parents are Dr. R. Bruce and Dianne Cochrane. She has three brothers, Douglas, John, and Bill, and one sister, Kate. Lex earned two degrees from Simpson College: Biology and Sociology. She then worked at Midland University in Fremont, NE, for three years. She is now pursuing a degree in Neuroscience from Drake University, where she is also on the Dance Team. Her professional goal is to be a dentist who specializes in treating the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. She is hard of hearing herself and knows that as she continues to lose her hearing, it will become difficult to communicate, which is especially scary in medical situations. Lex currently lives a few blocks away from WPC with her brother, Douglas, and her dog, Heidi WanKenobi. She adopted Heidi in 2013 before she knew she was going deaf, and Heidi started behaving in ways that were helpful and eventually led to Lex getting her hearing checked. Heidi now also tells her when sirens are going off and helps her cross the street. Lex has been dating Patrick John Cashmore since November of 2012. Pat is a football coach at Iowa Western University. Lex’s biggest goals in life are to help others in the small ways no one thinks of, to be a person others feel they can lean on, to work for God, and to be a pillar of strength in her family. Her favorite things to do in down time are study the Bible, learn more about science, read Discworld novels, collect comic books, and eat massive amounts of cheese cubes. We are so happy that you have chosen to join us at Windsor, Lex! Page 9 Ann loves to garden and decorate dollhouses. These have won several awards at the Iowa State Fair. Don, who is originally from Shenandoah, enjoys genealogy, travel, and readying. He is particularly interested in Civil War history. Welcome to both of you! Ekram Kachu Ekram is from the Nuba Mountain area in Sudan. She moved here in January of 2001 and will go back to Sudan this month for the first time since moving to the United States. She is going for her brother’s wedding and is excited to be able to be there for that celebration. Ekram and her husband, Mukhtar, have four children: Bill, age 13; Kani, age 11; Kalarga, age 8; and Kume, age 5. Ekram works for Visiting Nurse Services and is also providing worship opportunities to the Arabic-speaking residents in Des Moines. Ekram is an ordained Elder of the Des Moines Presbytery and is leading worship services for Arabic-speaking residents who were wanting a place to worship together, as well as a pastor to lead them. Ekram truly enjoys talking with and listening to others. She and her family enjoy playing volleyball together, playing games, and watching movies. They live in Waukee. So glad to have you, Ekram! December 2015 Other News New Administrative Assistant Our new Administrative Assistant is Ann McGowan. She began work on November 11. Ann grew up in Greenfield, IA. In 1970 she graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She taught elementary music in the Colfax-Mingo School District for 34 years. Ann started her career in church music as choir director at First Presbyterian Church in Colfax in 1973. Cottage Grove Presbyterian Church hired her as music director in 1984. When she retired from teaching in 2004, Ann worked as Administrative Assistant for Cottage Grove Church and CROSS Ministries. She also taught Sunday School to the Sudanese children of the church, taking them on many cultural field trips. She retired from all her church jobs in 2011. After Cottage Grove closed, Ann became a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Des Moines. Ann’s husband, Terry, was a teacher at Valley High School. He passed away in August of 2012. Ann’s two cats, Sofie and Bella, keep her company at home in Urbandale. Long-Range Planning Group As many of you know, we have had two preliminary conversations in the last year with the city of Windsor Heights. They are interested in the potential development of the land the church owns across University. These nascent plans or ideas challenge our congregation to think about how God is leading our congregation into the future. The Session will be putting together a long-range planning group. If you would like to help dream about what the future ministries God is calling our congregation toward, and/or help plan for that future, please volunteer or suggest someone to be part of this important work. Page 10 Would you like to help the poorest of the poor in the small communities of the Our Sister Parish mission of the Presbytery of Des Moines in the Berlin, Usulutan, El Salvador area? Let’s reach out to those who need a dose of Windsor holiday cheer by opening up our church and our hearts to our neighbors! Miracle Hymn On a Starry Night in Bethlehem, a child was born to bring light to men, and off with wind our eyes grew dim. In a candle’s light, we found hope again. There are miracles all around, miracles yet to be found. Hid in every heart is an awesome prayer. Like a candle’s flame, hope will lead us there. And the darkness comes, let the light shine through. A spark of flame will ignite in you. In a candle’s glow, a virgin’s womb, in a simple prayer in the empty tomb. There are miracles all around, miracles yet to be found. Hid in every heart is an awesome prayer. Like a candle’s flame, hope will lead us there. When the light has dawned on Christmas Day, we will raise our voice in endless praise.
