2013–14 PCC FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT AN EDUCATION FROM PORTLAND COMMUNITY College is a bridge to a bright future. But for many low-income and first-generation college students, there’s a river of obstacles between them and their dreams of getting an education. With your support, the PCC Foundation has been helping students get to the other side. This past year, gifts to the Foundation have built bridges linking students to opportunities, our college to the business community, and current PCC students to our growing network of alumni. The PCC Foundation would like to thank you for creating crossings and connections for our students. In this report, you’ll have a chance to meet a few of these amazing students whose lives have been changed by your philanthropy. The PCC Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching lives and strengthening our region through support of education. Our vision is that all students have access to an excellent education at PCC and the support needed to succeed, regardless of their ability to pay. THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS DEAR PCC FRIENDS, It’s been a momentous year for PCC — one filled with the accomplishments of our 90,000 students at four regional campuses and 14 centers, connecting across five counties and spanning both sides of the Willamette. One of PCC’s model programs, Future Connect, has served 900 students, the majority being the first in their family to pursue higher education. Future Connect is boasting an 85 percent retention rate for recent high school graduates, who receive a guaranteed scholarship upon entering PCC as well as intensive advising and coaching. It is thanks to you — PCC Foundation donors hailing from near and far — that we can offer our students life-changing programs such as Future Connect. Your support builds bridges of opport unit y for st udents in need at PCC, Oregon’s largest institution of higher education. The PCC Foundation is here, working to grow philanthropy and open doors for PCC students and programs to achieve success in powerful ways. In academic year 2014–15, the PCC Foundation will award one million in scholarship dollars, the highest amount in its 32-year history. We applaud and thank you for helping to reduce the financial loan burdens that students carry. As almost half of PCC students are on financial aid, donor support makes a deep, positive impact on students’ educational experiences. Across our campuses and centers, construction on new buildings and renovations have taken place, providing top-notch facilities and state-of-the-art classrooms and labs plus productive and safe learning environments. This year the PCC Foundation is reaching out to our 1.3 million alumni, to invite them to visit our new campus facilities, engage them in the work of the college, and give back to current PCC students. It’s truly an exciting time for PCC! As you read the donor and student stories in this report, we hope you’re inspired to start conversations about PCC within your community. We also encourage you to share your personal story of giving by emailing us at [email protected]. On behalf of the PCC Foundation and the entire college, we thank you for being a bridge to opportunity for our students this past year, and we hope, in the years to come. Thank you! Sincerely, Portland Community College President Jeremy Brown and 2013–14 PCC Foundation Board President Dick Stenson. Dr. Jeremy Brown Portland Community College President Richard Stenson 2013–14 PCC Foundation Board President Donor support makes a deep, positive impact on students’ educational experiences. PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT Building bridges for low-income and first-generation students Future Connect puts students on the path to college WHEN KESIA TOSH ISN’T STUDYING aeronautical engineering, writing short fiction, or getting lost in an old-school vampire novel, she’s taking care of her six younger brothers and sisters. The second year Future Connect student is the first in her family to attend college and is happy to be back at school this fall. “All my brothers and sisters are super proud of me,” she said. PCC’s groundbreaking Future Connect Scholarship Prog ram currently provides scholarships, academic support, and one-on-one mentoring to more than 600 low-income and first-generation college students in Portland, Beaverton and Hillsboro, students who — like Kesia — would not be able to attend college without this life-changing opportunity. Future Connect is a remarkably successful program with a student retention rate of 85 percent, compared to a 20-percent rate for low-income, first-generation students with strong academic performance who are not enrolled in the pro- gram. Future Connect students this year have gone on to transfer to Lewis & Clark, OSU, PSU, University of Utah, University of Houston and WSU-Vancouver. Launched in 2011 as a partnership between PCC and the City of Portland to assist students in Multnomah County, today Future Connect also works with students in the Hillsboro and Beaverton School Districts in Washington County. This growth is made possible because of the generous gifts of many donors, one of the most pivotal being a 2012 grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust in the amount of $300,000 over three years. “Meyer Memorial Trust is a significant funder of PCC’s Future Connect because this program actively promotes equity and access for our region’s students and communities of color,” said Doug Stamm, CEO of the Meyer Memorial Trust. “Future Connect targets students from communities that have been historically underrepresented in higher education, helping them succeed at a moment in their lives when the power of education can open worlds of opportunity. We applaud this innovative collaboration, which is raising the bar on equity throughout our region.” The Meyer Memorial Trust grant came with a unique matching challenge. This call for support has been invaluable to Future Connect and has helped expand its impact in Washington County. The Reser Family Foundation stepped up in the name of opportunity, making a $20,000 gift to support the expansion of this key program in Washington County. “The Reser Family Foundation supports Future Connect as it provides educational opportunity and access to Washington County’s underserved students, while helping ensure businesses have a qualified workforce to meet the demands of Oregon’s 21st century economy,” said Reser Family Foundation Director and PCC Foundation Board Member Marty Reser. Future Connect students Daniel Rico and Kesia Tosh get ready for the new school year. Future Connect has been phenomenal for me. It’s shown me so many possibilities. I’m the first in my family to go to college, but it really doesn’t feel like it because I have a whole family here. — Kesia Tosh, Future Connect Scholarship recipient Getting this scholarship really makes me feel like people believe in me. I can’t thank you enough. — Doug Mecham, 2014 Howard Butzer Scholarship recipient Doug Mecham is currently studying journalism at PCC. He plans to transfer to the University of Oregon to study radio broadcast journalism. We’re proud that this is part of our legacy,” Wimmer said. Donors Bob Wimmer and Howard Butzer PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT Expanding possibilities between vision and creation Students’ ideas come alive in PCC’s MakerSpace WITH 3D PRINTERS AND SCANNERS , CNC machines, lasers, vinyl cutters, sheet metal tools, a plastic injection molder and even a sewing machine, the PCC Sylvania Campus MakerSpace is a workshop for the 21st century craftsman. Students come to this space with an idea and within a matter of hours can have a physical model of their creative vision in their hands. The possibilities here are limitless. PCC students have recently used the space to laser cut a custom design into a handmade axe sheathe, a rubber sole for a custom shoe, and a to-scale 3D model of the human heart. Jordan Nickerson, a 23-year-old computer science student born without a hand, used the MakerSpace to create a working prosthetic limb for himself. This project was so successful that he’s now planning to create his own business supplying af- fordable, custom-made prosthetics to low-income individuals. Additional MakerSpaces have begun to show up at other PCC campuses since the Sylvania space opened in January thanks to a $20,000 capacity-building grant from Intel awarded last fall. Intel’s support of the college’s science and engineering mentorships has enhanced programs like PCC Summer Robotics and Wearable Tech Camps that encourage K–12 students to play, imagine and innovate using MakerSpace tools. “Our research and experience show that students become more engaged in science, technology, engineering and math when they are learning by doing. The new MakerSpaces provide a multitude of resources for students to get critical, hands-on experience. That’s very exciting,” said Janet Rash, Intel’s Northwest Region Community Engagement Manager. Despite a wall of printers and the f loor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with plastic pellets, wire and balsa wood, the Sylvania MakerSpace is more than just a storehouse for equipment and tools for making. A supportive space where students work collaboratively with peer mentors and faculty members to help them shape their ideas, the MakerSpace’s greatest product is confident, capable students. “The Maker Movement fosters problem solving, collaboration and critical thinking — 21st century skills that are in high demand for today’s employers. Not only will the students who come here feel more connected to their classes and their interests, they will be getting real-world education,” Rash said. Jordan Nickerson tinkers on a new project with MakerSpace mentor Eric Thomas. Everyone in the MakerSpace wants to create something. They want to change something. You walk in there and someone’s creating something new or designing something new that the world has never seen before. — Jordan Nickerson, PCC computer science student and MakerSpace prosthetics designer As someone who has struggled with dyslexia and dysgraphia throughout my education, this scholarship is very personal to me. I’m very grateful to have this support as I continue my studies in graphic design. — Anita Magaña, Learning Differences Scholarship recipient (From left) Jungim Hwang, Leina’ala Slaughter, Anita Magaña (with her son Leo) and Tianyi Gao are four of the nearly 1,000 students to receive scholarships from the PCC Foundation this year. SCHOLARSHIP SPOTLIGHT Making the mark PCC Foundation awards $1,000,000 in scholarships — our biggest year yet! LAST Y EA R THE PCC FOUNDATION set the ambitious goal of awarding one million dollars in scholarships to students in need. Thanks to your generosity, we’ve reached this important milestone. In the 2014–15 academic year, we’ll award scholarships to nearly 1,000 PCC students — that’s 10 percent more than last year! We ’re g iv i ng out more schola rships than ever before, but we’re also seeing a huge uptick in the number of applications received. The more students look to scholarships for support, the less they’ll have to rely on student loans to finance their education. Ma ny of t he schola rsh ips we ’l l award this year will be set aside for first-generation, low-income students through PCC’s Future Connect Scholarship Program. Other scholarships will be awarded based on merit, academic interest or student background. The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation Schola rsh ips, for exa mple, a re de- sig ned to assist st udents who have ex p er ience d spi n a l cord i nju r ie s . The fund offers a full year of tuition to three students and includes extra support to cover the transportation and care costs of getting to class. The Sha nnon Floyd Schola rship and the Marilynn and Dick Whetsell Scholarship are other unique scholarships for students pursuing studies in the Lactation Education and Consultant Program, which trains students to serve in hospitals and clinics as lactation consultants supporting mothers and families in need. All of our donors and sponsors help to create a myriad of opportunities for our students whose diverse backg rounds, interests and experiences add to our PCC community. With your continued support, we can ensure that more of t hese st udents receive t he support they need to find their path — wherever it may take them. FACULTY GIVING PROFILE Speaking the language of opportunity ESOL instructors join forces to keep students on track W HILE THE COST OF A WOR K BOOK should never be a barrier for a student who wants to learn, paying for supplies and fees can be a major challenge for many ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students who don’t qualify for federal student aid, says longtime PCC instructor Nancy Winbigler. “A lot of our ESOL teachers were just stepping up and buying students the books they needed. So I thought it would be better if we pooled our resources and made some sort of collection of books to lend out to our students,” Winbigler said. Over the past four years, ESOL faculty on all four PCC campuses have come together to raise money to cover fees and supplies for students at risk of dropping out. They started organizing jewelry and book sales, hosting an annual talent show — and even selling snacks at their t ESOL faculty members go the extra mile for their students by selling snacks, organizing events, and helping them through the scholarship application process. night classes, all to raise money for deserving students. “I know a lot of students who would not still be here if they hadn’t gotten access to this kind of support,” Winbigler said. The ESOL faculty’s efforts have supported lending libraries for student textbooks as well as four full scholarship funds designed to help students in upper-level ESOL classes transition into regular PCC credit courses such as college writing. Faculty are also working on creating an endowed fund for these scholarships. Motivated by a matching gift challenge, they are even more inspired knowing that their contributions to this fund will be doubled. “We hope these scholarships will serve as an incentive for students who start with us at the lowest levels of language classes and stick with it,” Winbigler said. “We want our students to aim high.” ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Investing in our future Diamond Alum says it’s the students who inspire her to give back ACCOMPLISHED CPA AND SELF-MADE financial professional Cheryl Burgermeister (‘73) knows a good investment when she sees one. That’s why she’s given back to PCC as both a donor and Foundation Board member for years. “Seeking a higher education degree is one of the best things someone can do,” Burgermeister said. “I’m a huge believer in PCC.” A longtime PCC Foundation board member, Cheryl has the reputation of a wise investor whose experience sitting on several well-respected mutual fund boards has become a valuable asset to the college. Before building a career in finance, Cheryl studied radiology technology at PCC and served as chief technologist in the radiology department of Providence Hospital. Although she ultimately ended up switching careers, she says that earning a degree from PCC gave her the confidence she needed to branch out and try something new. To honor her roots in radiology and help students on their own journeys of exploration, Cheryl set up an endowed memorial scholarship for her late husband, George, to support students pursuing careers in radiology. As one of the 2014 Diamond Alumni Award honorees, Cheryl is a shining example of the transformative power of education. The PCC Foundation is proud to share her story as we honor the achievements of our 1.3 million alumni. A longtime friend and supporter of the college, Cheryl Burgermeister (‘73) also donates her time as the PCC Foundation secretary and treasurer. Kim Kono PCC Foundation Director of Development Statement of Activities Financial outlook 2013–14 PCC FOUNDATION’S TOTAL SUPPORT and revenues in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 (FY 2014) grew by 25 percent over the prior year, totaling over $4.38 million. This included more than $1 million in investment income on our investment portfolio, an 80 percent increase when compared to last year. New in-kind contributions — including a jet engine for our aviation program — demonstrated strong support from the community to support programs and departments. PCC Foundation’s total expenses for FY 2014 included scholarships and programs, along with supporting services and investment fees. Foundation revenues provided nearly $1.6 million in PCC scholarships and program as- sistance, including funding for STEM initiatives, such as an All-Girls Summer Robotics Camp and the expansion of the PCC Future Connect Scholarship Program to Washington County. During FY 2014, PCC Foundation’s net assets grew by more than $1.66 million to over $12 million. Further, the Foundation’s endowment and affiliated net accumulated earnings accounts grew by 20 percent during the year to over $6.6 million. In the last three years through the work of the PCC Foundation and generosity of our donors, net assets and endowed funds have increased by almost thirty percent. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to you, our committed donors. Together we are making opportunity happen for PCC students across our region!
