RYEDALE FESTIVAL
11 TH -27 TH july 2008
RYEDALE FESTIVAL 2008
Earth, Air, Fire, Water
Welcome to Ryedale
Festival 2008. Following
the extraordinary British
weather in the summer of
2007, one of the main
themes in this year’s
programme is The Four
Elements – Earth, Air, Fire
and Water. The programme
also explores the Serenade
(a genre with its origins in outdoor
performance, but here all sensibly played
indoors) and the trilogy of French masters
Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen. We will continue
last year’s exploration of musical arrangements
– excellent transcriptions for chamber forces
that enable us to bring major symphonic music
to the intimate venues of this magical Festival.
Castle Howard will once again host a magnificent
‘triple concert’ in which three programmes will be
performed in different parts of the house, giving
the audience three mini-concerts in one evening.
Another innovation, the ‘RyeCrawl’, will see the
audience taken on a magical musical mystery tour
by coach, visiting a sequence of stunning
architectural gems; each venue will be brought to
life by a short recital. If you know someone who
lives in the area who would find it hard to get to a
concert, you can nominate them for a ‘Concert in
your Kitchen’ – a short performance in their own
home given by one of the Festival’s artists!
The BBC Singers, conducted by Stephen Cleobury,
are joined by the award-winning young cellist Guy
Johnston to give a major concert in York Minster;
other artists include the Sacconi and Doric String
Quartets and an ensemble from Opera North; the
period-instrument orchestra The Harmony of
Nations will be in residence in the first week,
giving two concerts and accompanying the Festival
Opera (Handel Orlando). We have brass bands, a big
band and a steel band, and Ryedale’s wealth of
local talent will be showcased in the ever-popular
Community Opera and other performances.
We are very grateful to the Ryedale District Council
for their continuing support of the Festival, and to
the many sponsors, trusts and individuals without
whose help we would be unable to bring such a
wide range of first class performances to the
district. Our thanks also go to the Patrons and
Friends who do so much to make the Festival such
an exhilarating fortnight. Come and enjoy the
magic of live performance – I look forward to
seeing you here!

Front cover : ‘Empedocles Roots’ by Harriet Mackenzie.
This image of the Four Elements was commissioned by Ryedale Festival. The greek philosopher Empedocles
identified Earth, Air, Fire and Water as the four ‘roots’ of which everything is made; Plato seems to have
been the first to call them ‘Elements’.

Barry Russell The Wedding Ghost
a contemporary Sleeping Beauty
Community Opera
A mysterious map, a strange journey, a magical
castle in a forest of thorns and an impossible
decision feature in this contemporary reworking of
the story of the Sleeping Beauty. On the eve of his
wedding a young man is sent on a quest. A journey
by train, through deserted streets and down river
brings him to a palace where everyone has slept for
centuries. To kiss and awake the past, or to return
to a mundane life? Our hero’s choice leads to a
cataclysmic climax and an unconventional marriage.
Commissioned by Ryedale Festival from Barry
Russell, based on the book by Leon Garfield.

Union Baroque Orchestra. Much loved works by
Handel and Mozart are paired with two dramatic

brilliant work Les Elemens ‘I dared to link the idea
of the confusion of the elements with that of
confusion in harmony’; Georg Philipp Telemann’s
witty orchestral travelogue depicts various

Haydn String Quartet op.71 no.1
Barber String Quartet op.11
Beethoven String Quartet op.18 no.1
Barber rightly described the slow movement of his
string quartet as ‘a knockout’; little did he know how
immensely popular it would become in its arrangement for string orchestra. Here it is performed in its
original guise and framed by two major works of the
classical repertoire. The Doric String Quartet is fast
emerging as one of the leading quartets of their
generation. Now in its 10th season, the Quartet
regularly performs at most of the UK’s leading
chamber music venues, with recent performances
including their debut at the Edinburgh International
Festival (broadcast on BBC Radio 3), two concerts at
Wigmore Hall and a tour of Indonesia.
When friendly summer calls again,
Calls again
Her little fifers to these hills,
We’ll go – we two – to that arched fane
Of leafage where they prime their bills
Before they start to flood the plain
With quavers, minims, shakes, and trills.

Born in 1979, James has performed throughout
Europe and in India, Korea, Russia and the USA.
This programme of music for unaccompanied cello
juxtaposes Bach’s glorious Suite in G with Edwin
Roxburgh’s Partita (written as a test piece for the
1972 Tchaikovsky competition) and Kodály’s
virtuosic Sonata. Barralet’s wide-ranging musical
interests are reflected in his improvisation on a
song by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Finzi Earth and Air and Rain
Gerald Finzi admired the poetry of Thomas Hardy so
greatly that he composed no fewer than six song
cycles to his texts. Sir Richard Rodney Bennett’s
atmospheric settings of Walter de la Mare poems
and Finzi’s cycle frame a beautiful programme which
includes three well-known serenades. Matthew
Sprange made his Wigmore Hall debut in 2007, and
Opera magazine recently said his ‘clarity of diction
would put a major name or two to shame’.

finest harpists. She studied at the Purcell School
and Royal College of Music, winning numerous
national and international prizes including first
prize in the 1999 London Harp Competition. The
elegant saloon of Duncombe Park is the perfect
setting this solo recital, a mixed programme with
something to suit all tastes.

Two pinnacles of the wind ensemble repertoire:
Strauss’ Serenade is scored for 13 winds, Dvor̆ák’s
work adds cello and double bass. Brahms wrote to
the violinist Joseph Joachim (who performed in
Ryedale in 1900) about Dvor̆ák’s Serenade ‘It would
be difficult to discover a finer, more refreshing
impression of really abundant and charming
creative talent.’
This exciting new ensemble is formed from recent

Following the great success of 2007’s Orpheus and
Eurydice, this production of Orlando will see the
return of the countertenor Robert Ogden (‘a rare and
exciting find’ – Opera magazine). In an excellent
English translation by Stephen Oliver, performed by
a first-rate cast and period instrumental ensemble,
we continue Ryedale’s tradition of opera in
intimate surroundings. Orlando’s love for the pagan
princess Angelica drives him to madness, of which
he is ultimately cured by the magician Zoroastro –
the opera’s vivid characters are defined by some of
Handel’s most stunning music.

A comedy about broken vows, failed hopes and the
joys of beekeeping, Humble Boy received its
premiere at the National Theatre in 2001 to great

five year old Felix Humble is a Cambridge astrophysicist in search of a unified field theory.
Following the sudden death of his father, he returns
to his middle England home and his difficult and
demanding mother, where he soon realises that his
search for unity must include his own chaotic home
life. ‘Rich, original, intelligent, funny and touching,
bursting with ideas and characters that you come
to care about deeply’ (Daily Telegraph).
Fall, rain, fall,
Reawaken in me those dreams
That I dreamed in my childhood,
When the water foamed in the sand!
What bliss, in the downpour
To stand with bare feet,
To ramble in the grass,
And to grasp at the shower with outstretched hands.

‘Agile, incisive and impassioned’ (BBC Music
Magazine), Alexandra Wood has won major prizes at
international violin competitions including the
Wieniawski, Tibor Varga and Yampolsky; most
certainly ‘a talent to watch’ (The Strad). Brahms
wrote the G major Sonata at around the same time
as his Violin Concerto; it is dubbed the ‘Regenlied’
because it quotes a song of that title that Brahms
had written a few years earlier.

Mahler revised his works throughout his life; the
grand orchestral scores for which he is best known
started life at his piano, and the song cycle Das Lied
von der Erde was no exception. Schoenberg later
created an arrangement of the work for chamber
ensemble, which will be performed by sixteen
musicians from Opera North, whose concerts in
Ryedale have been extremely popular. This is the
third in a series of chamber performances of Mahler
transcriptions at Ryedale (following Lieder eines
fahrenden Gesellen and Symphony no.4), enabling
us to bring this wonderful music to venues that are
not large enough for Mahler’s huge orchestra!
Programme to include works by Telemann, Corelli
In this ‘promenade’ concert, the audience is invited
to move between three parts of the house to hear
music that is appropriate for each room – a brilliant
chance to experience the building being brought to
life. A superb young piano duo give us La Mer in
the Long Gallery in the composer’s own arrangement
for piano duet and the Great Hall will reverberate to
the sounds of Italian baroque music for recorder
and strings. Rising star Elin Manahan Thomas’
programme includes Judith Weir’s remarkable King
Harald’s Saga, which is described as ‘a miniature
grand opera for soprano’ in three acts. The soprano
singlehandedly plays eight roles, including the
Norwegian army, in ten minutes!
This event was so well received last year that you
are advised to book early.

Peter Wright is President of the Royal College of
Organists and Director of Music at Southwark
Cathedral. Under his direction the Choir has recorded
five CDs, undertaken three tours to the USA and
several to the continent and broadcast regularly on
television and radio, including recording the
signature-tune for Mr Bean for Thames Television.
He is in great demand both as a conductor and a
recitalist, with recent performances in Japan,
South Africa, USA, Bermuda, Australia and New
Zealand, and is sure to make a huge impact with
the glorious organ of Ampleforth Abbey.

Concert in your Kitchen
Do you know of someone who lives in Ryedale
who would love live music but is unable to get
to concerts? If you have a friend or neighbour
who is housebound you will be able to
nominate them for their own private concert.
During the period of the Festival this July,
musicians who are performing in the Festival
concerts will visit residents to play for them for
ten minutes or so – the only payment being a
cup of tea! We will facilitate as many of these
performances as possible, and are extremely
grateful to all those musicians who have already
agreed to take part in this project – a very
exciting innovation through which we really can
ensure that everyone has a chance of access to
excellent live music.
Ryedale is a vast district, embracing the Vale of
Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors; this
year will see this project and the RyeCrawl
focussed on the northern area, moving
elsewhere in future years.
Please send nominations by post
(Ryedale Festival, The Memorial Hall, Potter Hill,
Pickering, N. Yorks YO18 8AA) or by email
([email protected]).

What links a castle, an abbey and an Elizabethan
manor house? The RyeCrawl – a magical musical
mystery tour! In this innovative piece of
programming the audience will board buses at the
meeting point and be taken on a tour of several
lesser-known Ryedale gems. At each venue you will
find performers waiting to give you a short
performance, so you will experience six minirecitals in one day. Music will range from Gregorian
chant to jazz, taking in Vaughan Williams en route
(to mark the 50th anniversary of his death);
performers will include a brass band, choir, wind
quintet and string ensemble. Beyond that, all other
details are a carefully guarded secret! This is a
wonderful way to explore venues in which we could
otherwise not present concerts; every one is of
unique interest and beauty, and the music will be
appropriate to each venue. Tickets include bus
transportation; please book well in advance.

A 40’s night with Glenn Miller tunes… the Galaxy
Big Band from Norfolk pulls no punches with its
brilliant arrangements of big band classics from
Moon River to New York, New York. This 18-piece
line-up of saxophones, brass and rhythm, led by
the blazing trumpet of Roger Chinery, will provide a
wonderful evening’s entertainment. You don’t have
to dance, though… unless you want to!

The final concert of the Festival will include a wide
range of music for string orchestra, framed by two
major serenades: Tchaikovsky’s effervescent
Serenade for Strings and Britten’s evocative work
for solo tenor and horn. The concert will be relayed
to a giant screen in the garden of the Worsley Arms
(back by popular demand following this innovation
in the 2007 Festival), allowing a far greater
audience to enjoy the concert.
Please note early start time.
