TRIHRA Board Update
Patricia Dietz, President
We’re over three months into the year and our chapter committees are rockin’ it out. Every year, we
experience some turnover on our board and within our committees. Turnover is a “bad word” in the HR
world. It makes us think of higher costs, loss of productivity and higher workloads. Ugh! TRIHRA
experiences turnover, too. We LIKE turnover. The chapter reaps new ideas and fresh outlooks. With new
committee chairs on board for Programs, College Relations and Workforce Readiness AND more members
getting involved on committees this year, TRIHRA is experiencing great energy and new ideas.
I just attended the quarterly Iowa State Council meeting with other chapter, state and national leaders and
would like to share some highlights from that meeting and from recent SHRM notifications.
2014 Silver EXCEL Award
We just received notification from SHRM that TRIHRA was awarded the 2014 Silver EXCEL Award. This
award recognizes outstanding achievements in chapter operations from both board and committee
initiatives and a commitment to providing meaningful programs and services to our members.
Congratulations TRIHRA!
SHRM Foundation 2015
More than 100 scholarships totaling $122,500 will be awarded to SHRM members by the SHRM Foundation
in 2015. The awards program is designed to support HR professionals working towards a college degree or
SHRM certification. Individuals may apply for a $2,000 education scholarship and/or a $750 certification
scholarship. Application Deadline: July 15, 2015. Visit www.SHRMFoundation.org, click on “Scholarships &
Awards” to learn more.
Nominate a Superhero
HR Superheroes are all around us. Consider who you’d like to nominate as an HR Superhero to be
recognized at the Iowa SHRM State Conference. See the article inside for more information.
SHRM Advocacy
Washington needs to hear from HR professionals before final legal decisions are made from Capitol Hill.
Now there’s a website and an app to make it even easier. Visit http://advocacy.shrm.org/ on your computer
or download the SHRM Advocacy app on your phone or tablet. You can keep track of legislation on the
docket, contact your state and federal representatives to make sure your voice is heard, and keep up with
new developments and key issues.
HR Certification
National SHRM continues discussion on how long to provide dual certificates for completion of training
(HRCI credits and SHRM PDC’s). The best that chapter leaders can do is to inform members on options and
let each individual make the decision that is best for them – that’s exactly what TRIHRA will do through
newsletter and meeting updates. We will apply for both HRCI and SHRM PDC certificates of completion
throughout the year and stay tuned into SHRM’s direction in the coming months.
Conferences
The National SHRM conference is in Vegas this year from June 28 to July 1 and the Iowa SHRM State
conference will be held at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines October 7 – 9. Early bird registration
should be available at the time this newsletter is published.
Kudos to all past, present and future TRIHRA volunteers. Your hard work makes professional development
possible for all our members.

HR Manager, Dubuque Data Services
I have always handled HR activities in every job role I have had; from my days of running the family
bakery to being a hospitality resort manager. As a resort manager for a world-wide hospitality group,
our HR was off-site, which left all the day-to-day HR responsibility up to me. It was during this time
where I truly became interested in recruitment as well as talent & leadership development. Finding
creative ways to recruit, engage employees, and then help them achieve their potential, became a
passion of mine. The funny thing is that I had no formalized HR training. I would read articles and
attend seminars. I would recall examples of good and bad leadership, which I had witnessed
throughout my career and began to apply these in my daily activities; as well as applying business
practices to HR related processes.
In 2011, with the recession in full swing, my position was transfered, and with kids in high school, relocation was out of the
question. I took this opportunity to finish my degree, and transition full-time to the field of HR.
My first “true” HR position has been with Dubuque Data Services, where I was hired in as a part-time generalist, and have since
moved to full-time HR Manager. Being able to explore and develop a company strategic focus to recruit & develop technical and
leadership talent has been a great experience, blending my business background with my HR role.
Best advice I will pass on? Spend time with the people, at all levels, within your organization. The better you know them and their
needs, the better you are able to serve them; every one of them is your customer.
I have lived in Scales Mound with Brenda, my amazing wife, for 20 years. Our daughter Samantha is a Civil Engineer for a
construction company in Madison, Nathan is a Welder in Madison, and our twins, Harrison and Morgan will finish high school next
year.
What you may not know about me: Drawing on my years of experience growing up in & operating my family’s bakery in Galena, I
opened a wholesale dessert bakery to support my family as I finished my degree and my career transition to HR. Pikant Dessert
Company produces desserts for local and regional restaurants, including many Dubuque area restaurants and banquet facilities.

The TRIHRA Workforce Readiness committee participated in providing rapid response
services for dozens of workers impacted by recently announced layoffs at IBM. The
dislocated workers learned more about their options and available services on Tuesday,
February 17 and Thursday, February 19. The goal of the event, which was organized by
the state, was to coordinate services and provide immediate aid to affected workers.
The TRIHRA workforce readiness committee offered a variety of services including
resume preparation, interviewing services, employment resources, how to build a
LinkedIn profile, career coaching services, etc. A big thank you to the following TRIHRA
volunteers who volunteered their time on VERY short notice: Brian Hartlep, Jessica
Gofforth, Tina Wallace, Rae Ann Parks, Julia Holdridge, Joyce Parsons, Patricia Dietz,
Keith Jakel, and Dianne Schaufenbuel.

Title: Customer Service, Remember Me?
Presenter: Sheila Schmidt, Trainer
Date: May 7, 2015 from 9:00 am – 11:00 am
Location: NICC Town Clock Business Center, 680 Main St., Room 106A, Dubuque, IA
Cost: $49.00 per person
Description: Don’t forget to consider the customer while offering service. Easy, right? Then
why do we all have examples of poor customer service to share? Put the customer back into
customer service. The tone for a customer’s experience with your organization begins at the
first point of contact. Is that experience “good enough” or is it “outstanding”? This class helps
you identify the situations that are most challenging for your organization, and then determine
how you can better understand what drives customer demands, calculate the value of a
customer, and provide service that builds ongoing relationships with your customers.
Register: for Class #33653 by going to www.nicc.edu/solutions or call 563.557.8271 ext. 380.
Pre-registration is required.
Title: Coaching for Organizational Excellence
Presenter: Dr. Celina Peerman
Date: June 2, 2015 from 8:00 am – noon
Location: NICC Town Clock Business Center, 680 Main St., Room 106A, Dubuque, IA
Cost: $59.00 per person; HRCI credits have been applied for.
Description: If you enjoyed the “Coaching for Performance” class, this four hour workshop is
an opportunity to take a deeper look at coaching as part of your organization’s culture of
excellence. In the context of your industry or organization, you will start with a frank evaluation
of the culture and identify the factors that either support or hinder performance. This will be
followed by discussion and activities to illustrate the connection between the manager’s
leadership behaviors and his or her ability to develop stronger relationships with employees by
identifying and utilizing meaningful performance motivators. Critical conversations necessary
to facilitate high performance will be practiced and best practice recommendations will be
offered that can be applied to optimize performance excellence in your organization.
Register: for Class #37188 by going to www.nicc.edu/solutions or calling 563.557.8271 ext.

Here we are again enjoying another Spring season! Like always, we Mid-westerners love the warmer
weather, variety of emerging blossoms, renewed energies and commitments and that wonderful feeling of
optimism and hope!
How many of us view Spring as a time to “mix things up”? Most of us typically entertain thoughts of more
color mixes in our flower beds; starting that yard project we’ve been putting off; committing to renewed
efforts and time to enjoy family and friends; and aren’t we going to at least double the amount of time we
spent on the golf course or river last year?
Take a moment if you would and parallel these thoughts with the concept of diversity. Is it time for you to mix
things up? Maybe we’ve become too comfortable with surrounding ourselves with people who are a lot like
we are. Or maybe the new team member who suggested something totally outside of the norm wasn’t made
to feel welcomed or valued for their contribution. Perhaps we’re just even set in our ways and because we’ve
been doing something the same way for so long, it would never occur to us to actually consider changing!
Most of us recognize the popular version of the Golden Rule, “do to others as you would have them do to
you”. Try a different thought process and consider Tony Alessandra’s Platinum Rule, “treat others as they wish
to be treated”. Yes, it takes more effort and sometimes, it’s downright painful to leave our comfort zones, but
it is truly through combining our unique individuality that we realize a stronger community, work environment
and enrichment through our combined experiences!
Stay tuned for our next quarterly report when we announce the new members of the Diversity Committee and
a small social event!

If you’re like many
people, the Internet is
often the first resource
you turn to when you’re
faced with a new ailment
or illness. Unfortunately,
not everything you read
on the Internet is reliable.
Google is trying to change
that. In early 2015,
Google rolled out a new
search-result format for
the 400 most frequently
searched health topics.
The new layout shows
reliable, vetted medical
information in an
illustrated box on the
right side of the searchresult screen, next to the
usual search-result list.
The box also shows up on
mobile devices. To
provide this
professionally approved
medical information,
Google teamed up with
Mayo Clinic and other
doctors to vet available
content and ensure that
information is accurate.
Remember, though, if you
do have a serious or

problem, a Google search
is not a replacement for
proper medical care.
