We strongly recommend arriving up to 15 minutes early to ensure that all goes smoothly. After this time period, you may utilize the Office of Student Services for support to troubleshoot low-level AV issues. Submitting Maintenance Tickets For technology that is not functioning properly, please report the issue to either a TWC staff member in the Office of Student Services or via email to [email protected]. A helpdesk ticket will be submitted regarding the issue, and we can monitor its status from the Courses office. You may follow up on these tickets by reaching out to [email protected]. 3 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty How to Use Standard Classroom Technology Turning On/Off Computers If computer tower is off (no blue light behind power button) press the power button. To turn the computer off, click on the “Start” menu button in the lower left corner of your screen, then click “Shutdown”. 4 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Turning On/Off SMART Boards To turn on the SMART board screen, press the SMART board power button located on the bottom right corner of the board. Once you’ve turned on the SMART board screen, you must turn on the monitor locating on the left side of the SMART board screen. To turn off SMART board screen, press the same power button on the bottom right corner of the board once, wait two seconds, then press a second time. Screen will go blank, indicating that the power has shut off. 5 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Turning On/Off Flat-Screen Monitors If the light on the bottom right of the flat-screen monitor is flashing orange, the display will automatically turn on when the computer tower is turned on. If the light on the bottom right of the flat-screen monitor is solid red, press the right-most button on the underside of the monitor (set back a few inches). You will hear the screen turn on, and the light will turn green. To turn off the flat-screen monitor, simply turn off the computer by clicking on the “Start” menu button in the lower left corner of your screen, then clicking “Shutdown”. The screen will automatically turn off (bottom right light will turn to flashing orange). 6 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Logging on to your Classroom Workstation Each faculty member has been assigned a personal log-in and temporary password, provided at the start of each semester, to their classroom workstation. Once a computer is booted, you will be prompted to enter your username and password. You will be prompted to change the password after your first log-in. You must create your new password prior to using the printers for printing, scanning, or copying. For security, please ensure that you log-out of the account at the end of your class session. To log-out 1) click on the “Start” menu button in the lower left corner of your screen, 2) click on the arrow button next to “Shutdown,” and 3) select “Log off” from the menu. Using SMART Board Touch Function With the exception of Classroom 6 (the touch function does not work) and Classroom 2 (the screen orientation is off), all of the SMART boards’ touch features should work properly. Your finger works as a mouse when you touch the screen and the SMART board functions as a regular computer otherwise. If you choose not to use the touch function to navigate the screen, the mouse and keyboard can be used instead. 7 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Using a Flash/Thumb Drive to Access Files Insert flash drive into a USB port on the computer tower. After a few seconds, the computer will chime and a notification window with your flash drive name will appear on the screen. You can access your files by clicking on the notification window. If you don’t hear the chime or see the notification window, 1) click on the Start menu, 2) click on Computer and 3) your flash drive icon should appear under "Devices with Removable Storage". If the drive does not appear, try inserting the flash drive into a different USB port. 8 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty To eject your flash drive, 1) click on the USB icon located on the bottom right of the screen, 2) select "Eject (your flash drive name)" from the pop-up window, and it will automatically disconnect. After a few seconds, you can unplug your flash drive from the USB port. Accessing the WiFi Network All screens and computers should be connected to The Washington Center's WiFi network when you arrive. If you or a student also need WiFi access on your personal device, please use the following log-in info: Network: TWCguest Password: TWC_20036 9 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Using the Student Services Printer Please note that you must have reset your password to replace the temporary password provided at the start of the semester prior to using the printer to print, scan or copy. You will have to log-in manually to use the printer for the first time. After this, you may use your TWC faculty access card (ID badge) to initiate all printing, scanning, and copying. If you would like additional training on using the printer to print, scan, or copy, please email [email protected] to schedule a training with an IT representative during the first two weeks of the semester. When printing from your classroom workstation, ensure that you select “Student Services on TWCSERVER08” as your printer. This will send your document to the printer in the Office of Student Services. 10 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Playing a DVD To play a DVD, insert the disc into the disc drive of the computer tower. Then, 1) click on the Start menu, 2) click on Computer and 3) your CD icon should appear under "Devices with Removable Storage". Accessing Files from a CD-ROM To access files on a CD-ROM, insert the disc into the disc drive of the computer tower. Then, 1) click on the Start menu, 2) click on Computer and 3) your CD icon should appear under "Devices with Removable Storage". 11 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Additional Technology Available Upon Request Special Cables We strongly encourage faculty to use the computer equipment provided in the classrooms. However, if you must bring your own computer and connect it to the computer screens, please make sure to email [email protected] in advance, to ensure that we provide HDMI or VGA cables to connect your laptop to TWC's computer screens, in the instance that you don't have your own cables. Computer screens are compatible with PC and Mac platforms. The ports for HDMI and VGA cables are located on the back left of the computer screens. Once you have plugged your cable into the appropriate port, 1) select the input on the remote into the appropriate port and 2) choose the appropriate input. 12 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Troubleshooting Technology Issues TWC maintenance staff set up classroom furniture and computer equipment every day prior to the evening classes. However, if you experience any issues, please try any of the following troubleshooting tips: Turning on the Keyboard and Mouse Check to ensure that your keyboard and mouse are turned on. See photos below to locate the on/off switches for both. Restarting the Computer To restart the computer, 1) go to the “Start” menu on the bottom left of the screen, 2) click on the arrow next to the “Shut down” button, and 3) select “Restart” from the menu. 13 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty Once the computer restarts, you will be prompted to log-on to your workstation. Resetting your Log-In Password You will automatically be prompted to reset your password when you first log-in using the temporary password provided to you at the start of the semester. Future incorrect log-in attempts may result in you being locked out of your workstation. If this happens, request assistance from a TWC staff member in the Office of Student Services. They will help you reset your password, and will submit a helpdesk ticket to unlock your account. Checking the Computer Audio To check that your computer’s audio is working, click on the speaker icon in the bottom right-hand menu of your screen. If the sound is muted, the icon will display a red “no symbol” over the speaker image. To unmute the audio, click on the speaker icon within the Speakers window. The “no symbol” will disappear when the audio is turned on. To adjust the sound level, click and drag the sliding control bar to set the audio to your preferred volume. 14 The Washington Center • Technology Handbook for Faculty
