BLGC MGA 9-Holer Report for February 16, 2017 A brisk mid-February morning saw six of those World Famous 9-Holers show for some pre-game coffee, news and paying of entry fees. The great news this morning came from Mac McConahy who was showing everyone the large engagement ring he got for Joyce. It was a huge ring with a great big “diamond”. Mac said it took him $12 to finally claw the thing out of the CLAW machine! But that was Mac’s way of telling us that he and Joyce are officially engaged to which coffee cups were lifted high in a salute. Today’s game was STABLEHERD which in no way describes the way in which 9-Holers play golf except for the Herd part. Our two Putting Competitors were C.L. Newsome (scorecard in hand) and Don Webb who felt it his obligation to give C.L. some competition since Ken Mayne was AWOL today. Our four Golfing Competitors were Mac McConahy, Greg Kepner, Bob Westbrook and me. At the #1 tee box we knew we were in trouble when Mac smashed a drive almost to the big rock on the right side of the fairway. The old guy had enough adrenalin to share (probably from working that claw machine twelve times!). Mac was on the green in two and parred the hole. This parring the hole would be repeated many times over today. The rest of us golfers just tagged along hoping for a decent drive or second shot or third shot or maybe a two putt. It’s always good to have a round where one can work on their handicap. That well describes Bob, Greg and my game today. Meanwhile the Putting Competitors were neck and neck with Don keeping C.L. under pressure at every hole. The most exciting moments today came from Greg Kepner. His tee shot on #8 landed a few inches from the hole and he took a “gimmie” for a birdie! Prior to that Greg received a “Yellow Card” for Intimidation of a Golf Ball (also known as an IGB for you golf rule gurus) when a putt stopped an inch before the hole (the Yellow Card was assigned later after Greg had safely returned his putter to his golf bag – just for safety reasons). In less than two hours the Herd had returned to the pro-shop for more coffee and more quizzing of Mac’s engagement. The scorecard was fed into the Quantum 9-Holer Computer with the new AI software still running. The computer had some choice comments about some of our scores. Fortunately for the computer all our putters were out in the golf bags on the carts! Within a whiz and a bang the results were sung aloud: Putting Competition: 1st Place for $3: Don Webb with 23 putts (not even close to a record); 2nd Place for $1: C.L. Newsome with 24 putts. Golfing Competition: 1st Place for $4: Mac McConahy with a net 28 ½ (Mac shot a 34 gross!!); 2nd Place for $2: Paul Castiglione with a net 34; 3rd Place for $1: Greg Kepner with a net 35 and a belated “yellow card”; 4th Place for $1: Bob Westbrook with a net 35 ½. That’s it for another great day of 9-Holer golf at good old Blue Lake! Paul Castiglione 9-Holer Herder
